Spot on!

I wish they'd change their name to Slasher Factory and release only slashers.

When it comes to "better" horror films, do you mean movies like "The Shining", "The Exorcist", 'Carrie", etc.? It's still all subjective, of course, but the genre is 98% escapist entertainment. Besides, most of the "better" horror films reside with the studios, meaning they've got about a snowball's chance in h*** of being licensed.

I wish they released more slashers, we need more on Blu-ray. I don't care how obscure they are.

Exactly what I posted here a week ago when someone mentioned they should release "better" horror films here. I think people may say better and mean higher tier horror films but like you said most of them reside with major studios and they have either already been released by the studio themselves or the studios are just holding onto them and do not have plans of licensing them out.

Save the obscure stuff for Code Red. Scream is releasing a diverse set of movies.
-You like slashers - Shout has them
-You like horror movies in general - Shout has them
-You like classic contemporary hororrs such of House of Usher - Shout has them
Everything from Sleepaway Camp to Witchboard to Die Monster Die to The Incredible Melting Man - its already diverse and it should stay that way

And then the term *better* films is purely subjective. Many would say Suspiria, which was on Screams radar is a better film than most slashers, but then a die hard slasher movie lover would say 'hold the phone just a minute!'
Personally speaking I prefer Dario Argento films over slashers and overall they can be considered better films (and bigger budgeted) but that doesnt mean I dislike 80s cheesy slashers

I don't know their budget and how purchasing the rights for some films stricly for home video release works. With that being said, I do in fact realize they most likely don't have the money to get the rights for big name films like The Shining and The Exorcist, nor would the studios want to release the rights to films like those. There has to be other horror films out there that they can afford that aren't strictly slasher films though.

When I was a kid I watched all the Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th and Halloween films, not to mention other ones, like some of the SF releases. I just always found slasher films to be at the bottom in the horror genre.

You ask what other films they could try to get the rights for and release. How about Pumpkinhead or Critters for example.

Same here. I just wish they would try to release more films like those. Once again, I know they only have so much money to spend on the rights for movies, but it would be nice to see more films that weren't slashers.

Pumpkinhead is very likely, but Critters is WB, so no to that.

I'm curious as to if WB actually gives a damn about that film though. It was well known in the 80s among horror fans, but it's not like it's incredibly popular to where WB will know it will sell like crazy.

Are they known for being stingy and not letting other companies release their films on Blu-ray?

*Rant Alert*:

Pumpkinhead is a slasher.

Towards the late 80s, the Slasher genre was still alive and well, but everything with a human killer had been done to death. Some still tried to make that model work, but most failed. But, some decided to mix together Slasher and other subgenres, to create an interesting new take on the dying breed of horror movie.

Pumpkinhead is a Monster-Slasher.
Chopping Mall is a Sci-Fi-Slasher.
Child's Play is a Supernatural-Slasher
Etc...

Pretty much ever film in the mid to late 80s, and even into the early 90s, was DIRECTLY influenced by slasher films.

Even to today, its one of the most popular and important subgenres of horror film.
And without it, arguably, the Horror genre would have not broken out on its own, and we certainly wouldn't have Pumpkinhead, or almost anything else "horror" for that matter.

I can see why you think that, but I don't count monster films as slashers. I also heavily disagree that films from the mid to late 80s and especially the 90s were directly influenced by slashers. Maybe some, but you make it sound like all. I don't know what to even type in regards to this..

"And without it, arguably, the Horror genre would have not broken out on its own, and we certainly wouldn't have Pumpkinhead, or almost anything else "horror" for that matter."

If slasher films never came about we still would have horror films being made from the mid 80s 'til now.

The slasher boom made people take notice of the horror genre.
Before major studios would rarely touch them, now look.

The Slasher film made horror mainstream. Doesn't make it the best sub-genre.
But I would argue any day that its the most important.

And as far as "If slasher films never came about we still would have horror films being made from the mid 80s 'til now", true.

But Exorcist 3, bye-bye. Psycho II and III. Adios.
Horror would have went in a completely different direction.

And for "I don't count monster films as slashers. I also heavily disagree that films from the mid to late 80s and especially the 90s were directly influenced by slashers."

King Kong isn't a Slasher. Neither is Godzilla or Rodan.
But Pumpkinhead is a slasher. All the elements are there, except for a "masked killer", which is actually there, just in a different, non-literal form.

But, like it or not, the Slasher film was a MAJOR influence on the direction horror took, in the late 80s and early 90s. Its arguably still influencing people. Not directly, like back then, but its still a popular subgenre and filmmakers are always looking for a new take on it.

And don't forget Scream, which, in 1996, revived the slasher genre and reinvented it for the post-MTV generation. Another endless cycle of ripoffs ensued, again, after Scream made tons of moolah. I'm a big fan of the first "I Know What You Did Last Summer" but the rest of the post-Scream output was meh IMO. Slasher movies seem to be the basis on which many horror movies are derived from so it's kind of silly to dismiss them outright.

Huh? Are saying that major studios didn't touch horror before slasher films (and when you say 'slasher boom, I assume you're talking about post-Halloween)?

I hate how some of you aren't saying that slashers can be better horror films. Elm Street 1,3,7, Friday the 13th 1-4,6, Halloween 1-4, etc.

I quite enjoyed The Faculty. Halloween water and Resurrection sucked, though.
