Key word right there is business. While we all dislike everything being region free the companies probably don't care. Why make all movies region free versus locking them and preventing the standard consumer the chance to get it cheaper by importing it. Most of us that import have scored some titles for cheaper then buying say the US version. I'm sure most companies want to avoid doing that as it would be a loss in profit for them.

Region Locking is for a few reasons mainly: - New Releases are available in some countries before others, Region Coding helps to prevent piracy. - Money, one companies release of Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (for example), won't sell well if everyone has already Imported a foreign disc. - Rights are held by different companies on a country-to-country basis, if everyone were allowed to import in this "digital age", then rights would be screwed up, Internationally. I don't like region coding either, but I understand why its common. Its NOT the studio's fault, and its not because they don't want your money, that's nonsense. |

I also don't buy your money theory. I don't get what you are saying, are you saying that if every country had, say, Ginger Snaps, so and so company wouldn't profit? That's negative thinking. If anything it's good for competition as it would encourage distributors to make their version distinctive by adding more extras, exclusive packaging, different cuts, etc. If Scream was the only one to licence all of their films and make it region free - 85% of which aren't available in any other regions, how would they lose money if they are the only distributors selling??? I'm not up to scratch on this licensing stuff so pardon my ignorance, but i'm interested in this. |

Rights owners limit region coding on titles they license so they can earn additional profits from selling licenses to the same titles in other countries. There is also the issue of who owns the right to films in different jurisdictions sometimes. Redrunner was spot on with his post. |

Fox and Disney are the main studios that pushed for region locking. |

I won't be supporting Shout on this one. Knowingly releasing movies with sub-standard transfers will ultimately kill off dedicated supporters of the label.
If the transfer isn't up to scratch they should pull the release, but that's just my opinion. |

![]() Which is exactly why I support the smaller companies like SF & TT. Without their efforts there would be a bunch of films (most likely) never to reach the format. Obviously a new transfer would be ideal, but most of these smaller budgets don't allow for it. |
