I like it. Still prefer DVD for the most part (mainly anything pre-2005), as the picture looks way too clean for me on something that shouldn't. But I have no real objections to the format. I will buy BDs (for the time being) only if in combo packs though.

If the picture "looks too clean", that makes me think you have your TV set to use motion interpolation, which makes everything but sports look like shit. Saying you prefer DVD to blu ray is like saying you prefer the smell of smog to clean air.

I remember seeing that argument applied to VHS vs DVD back in the day. If the filmmaker didn't shoot it on video and intentionally degrade it before it was released in the theater, I don't see how anyone could ever think the VHS was preferable. This DVD vs Blu-ray version of the same argument is even more bizarre cause in this case it's more just a matter of "one will have pixelization and less detail."

Your prayers have been answered. Now you can enjoy the first three films in wondrous HD.

A release I'll get for sure, but my God that cover is hideous.
Finally! Even though I already own the sequels double feature, I've been holding off watching them until I can rewatch the original. That old DVD was terrible and the audio was out of sync for the last 30 minutes of the movie. After Criterion didn't announce it last month, I started considering the German release, but decided to give Criterion until the October announcements. Glad they came through.

Unless something unheard of is wrong with your eyes, this is more factual than opinion. It's just simple math, 1080 lines of resolution are going to look better than 480. That will only become more noticeable the larger the viewing screen.
As for movies looking "dirty", I don't know what you mean by that. Can you list a few examples of films directors wanted to look "dirty" in their original theatrical presentation?

I didn't mean they looked dirty. What I meant to say was that I think something shot in the 80s should not look like it was made yesterday.

That said, I did think some looked gorgeous (Jaws). Whatever. Only my opinion.

No point in debating SD over HD in a bluray forum

The higher resolution sometimes is the only difference, while others the movies look so polished , clean and as if they were made yesterday (Day of the Animals)

One of my favorite things I remember about a blu ray fanboy was when Synapse was showing screen caps of Curtains and a user said "it looks so beautiful now " (something along those lines)
Don replied back and said " I haven't even done anything with it" Basically he hadn't starting to remaster Curtains in HD but one of those die hard blu ray fanboys thought was he saw was beautiful anyway.
That to me told me how blind some blu ray fanboys are ... I couldn't stop laughing

I would think that he probably posted an image from the 35mm negative (or 16mm negative, I don't know what Curtains was shot on), and that would have looked better than the VHS that everybody was used to. Blu-ray, and especially with older horror films on blu-ray, show something closer to the film's natural image. Even the ones that look really bad (Last House on the Left) look amazing because it's closest to what the actual film print looks like. I think the source material determines how clean an older film looks.

I hate motion interpolation, gives me a headache. First thing I did was turn that off on any of my HDTVs. Any shot that sweeps just looks unnatural. Most of the TV's on display at stores have it on and for the longest time I thought the picture just looked like crap because it had that "digital video" feel to it.

Whatever he used to post the fanboy called it beautiful and was under the impression he saw it with HD treatment...everyone knew it when he commented..it was really funny (you had to be there )

As far as this whole SD vs HD debate. Well it isn't really debatable because obviously HD looks "better" than SD. The only way this can be argued against is when there are unnatural elements thrown into the mix, like excessive DNR/EE. That being said I do understand why someone who has watched a certain move(like the original Evil Dead) 50 times on VHS and DVD over the years and has just grown accustomed to the look in SD so on first viewing in HD it just doesn't look right but you will than get used to the HD look so it all works out. As long as the intended look of the film isn't being manipulated all should be fine.

Decade, for the most part, doesn't matter. Source material does!

As it turns out, that is my problem. How do I fix it on a Samsung set? PM me.

I agree, and it is supposed to look better. And when done right it can look way better. However there are some titles like Near Dark and Deadly Spawn where it wasnt done correctly and the image looks no better or worse than a DVD...
Still better than a VHS though

hate this no sig, I loved having my polls in sig for people to click and vote, to help companies show what fans want to see, and also to bring down the amount of posts of already requested titles.
