I love it. The Battery was one of my favorite recent deep-cut discoveries.
It's also been championed by many horror news outlets, including Fangoria/FearNet and the Killer POV podcast. I'd even go so far as to say it's already a cult classic, in that there is a pretty big undergound-ish following for it. Yeah it's newer and indie. But this one is actually GOOD! Not "good for a newer film" just plain f'kin GOOD. It's low budget but uses its money wisely and it's definitely gonna have a home on my shelf. This is a big deal. Lol. Sounds really good. Like that Scream is not pigeon holding themselves in the catalog titles and is mixing it up with some recent horror films.
I haven't seen Dead Souls, I enjoyed Beneath and The Battery look promising. I will eventually pick up all 3 of these films. |

That's not a joke at you, but I'm serious. There is a wealth of very good modern horror films released every year, it just somehow doesn't hit people's radar. I don't know why, as they aren't uber-low budget disasterpieces, but really good quality films in all departments. I think I should write a cofee table book about how rad movies are these days (just as much as in the past, just slightly more obscure now). Haha. |

But for me, 2013 was the first year I've actually got into independent films. I always thought they just weren't up to par with mainstream movies. Boy was I wrong, I found myself constantly wondering why "this movie" didn't get a wide release. No wonder people think modern films suck, they literally are just not seeing the really really good ones, because there's no universal outlet for them. Movies are going through a very weird transition right now, particularly with distribution. Most films only receive limited theatrical runs now (unless they are blockbusters), whereas in the 80s they would have payed nationwide. It's so weird. So the audience has to dig deep to find a good one, they exist they're just covered up by bad ones. There aren't more bad than good, it's just so easy to make a movie now, so the viewer is forced to literally judge a film based on it's cover... That's the end of my rant lol. |
