I was under the impression he meant The Stuff.

I'm disappointed at the "no Universal" thing for the rest of 2014, too. I'm already getting more than I could hope for with Ginger Snaps (one of my all-time favorite horror films ), Sleepaway Camp, Phantom of the Paradise (haven't gotten to see those two, yet) and Dog Soldiers (really damn fun) later this year, so I'm not too bummed.

Out of curiosity, which Arrow releases has the Top Menu trick worked as of late? I have a region free player, but it's not always 100% effective when switching the region over, so I like to know when I have a backup trick to watch a Region B or C title...

Image has The Stuff over here. Not only is it unlikely we'll see it show up on Blu-Ray here, on the off chance it does, it'll likely be inferior to the various imports available. Re-Animator is a good example. Hell, so is Vamp, and that was released back when Arrow was very hit-or-miss...

I agree very much with this. I think the ending of the original, and the over the top nature of the sequels cloud it for a lot of people, but rewatching Sleepaway Camp last October, I was of the same opinion. It's perhaps due to budget issues, but a lot of the kills are quite artfully done, they're very creative in what they don't show, and it comes across as stylish and classy, for the most part, anyway.

John would very much love to be a part of it... he's also wanted to be a part of another one of his film's (American Gothic) release on home video in general.
I've known him for years as my association with WATHCER IN THE WOODS when I put together the Anchor Bay Edition.

I have a feeling it was a conscious decision on the part of Shout not to bother with Universal stuff because of the DNR issues and all the complaints. Personally, I'm happy that Shout isn't licensing any further Universal titles - now they can focus on grabbing stuff from companies without DNR trigger fingers.

It only works on certain machines - Panasonic, Pioneer. There may be others.

If the top menu trick will work on my PS3, I may have to jump on The Long Goodbye. I love that one.

The whole idea makes me a bit nervous though. I had success with Return of the Living Dead, but still.

Gotcha. I was mainly focusing on the latter half of the post you had quoted (partly because I'm more interested in The Stuff than I am for Dolls).

Thanks. Out of those, I'll probably pick up The Long Goodbye, and I may wait to see if Criterion ever upgrades their release of The Killers. As far as The Stuff goes, I hope that at the least, the Top Menu trick works; Vamp was released region free, and that was another Image title...

I can also confirm that the top menu button trick works on Arrow's Lifeforce, Dressed to Kill, Big Trouble in Little China, Black Sabbath and Zombie Flesh Eaters with my Panasonic player. I think the others I have are region free anyway (The Beyond, House by the Cemetery). The only issue I had at all with them was that some of the extras are on a separate PAL dvd on The Beyond and House by the Cemetery so I had to use my computer to watch those since my player can't convert PAL and my TV can't play it.

Does anyone know if that top menu (pop up menu) trick works on Samsung or Sony blu-ray players?

Just watched Dead Shadows (if I remember correctly Scream Factory is set to release the movie later on this year) and it just wasn't very good.
If I eventually learn that it only cost twenty thousand dollars, then I'll be really impress with the movie. I mean, had it been done by a friend of mine with no budget, I'd be all over it. But I have a feeling it cost a lot more than that. If you have no money, please do NOT use CGI. It just doesn't work. What makes filmmakers think they can pull off good CGI when big budget horror movies can't even do it themselves?

But since I had no way of knowing what the budget was, and since Scream Factory though it was good enough to be released on blu ray here, I figured it would be a really cool small monster flick. It definitely wasn't. Awful CGI. The whole story feels like a cheaply written student movie that thinks it's a lot cooler than it really is, and it tries way too much to be edgy and mysterious when all it needed to be was a simple monster flick. Simplicity works wonder in those kind of flick. It's already hard to accept that monsters are invading your city without also adding a disturbing childhood to the main character and giving him super powers. I mean, really? It's only an hour and 15 minutes, is it really necessary to add that and confuse your viewers more? Spielberg understood that it's always scarier when sh*t happens to normal folks.

Very disappointed and I have no idea why Scream Factory is even bothering. And god knows I usually root for indie flicks, and especially indie flicks with monsters in it. Watch Splinter instead if you're looking for a recent good indie monster movie. Much better yet very similar.

I'll admit though, there was one eerie cool scene with a really weird lady calling her dog earlier in the flick, before anything happened. I was pretty spooked by it. Felt like a Junji Ito manga brought to life. Too bad it never lived up to that one scene.

Sweet! Based on the screenshots, it does look considerably better than the Blue Underground one.

I believe this as well, through the acquisition of the First Look Studios catalog.
