Yeah, not everyone needs both kidneys. But everyone does need to have a limited edition BD of Exterminator 2.

I contend it's just a matter of priorities.

That's the kind of scenario that these independent labels dream about - selling thousands of copies to fans all over the world. Of course, there are ways to obtain region 1 Blu-rays if you're not in the US or Canada, not to mention people who have multi-region players, which is why I always find the "low sales" statements a little puzzling. I buy tons of European BDs, many of which are region B-locked. Horror, like sex, sells, in BIG numbers. Otherwise, there wouldn't be an explosion of cult titles from many different labels worldwide.
These titles are licensed for U.S/North America only for a reason. Either the licensor wants to retain International territories, or those rights are held by some other entity, or those rights got exploited by the licensor already. VERY rarely in this business a licensor will give you rights outside the U.S. Thats the way it is.

Whats with the facepalm?

Even so, its still limiting themselves majorly. US isn't the only country to have horror fans and for certain companies to be so restrictive is surely hurting there sales.

If it wasn't for Amazon I wouldn't own any Scream Factory titles, since there own website won't ship internationally.

The titles were NOT available to LICENSE internationally, just domestically. Why is it no one here understands how licensing works?

I do. That's why I have been evading this conversation.

People seem to think region locking is a choice.

It's like we're going in circles here. Shout never said they're getting out of the horror business, they just said they might not go for some of those really obscure titles. And why is that? Because they don't sell.

Obviously, not every title is gonna sell like Halloween II or They Live. Isn't it possible that the lower tier stuff like The Town that Dreaded Sundown isn't making them a whole lot of coin?

Let's say Final Exam totally tanks saleswise. Are you gonna back up your guarantee ("horror sells in BIG numbers") and personally buy a few thousand copies?

Scream has stated that The Town that Dreaded Sundown has been one of their better sellers.

It's funny, cause several of the movies Scream Factory have put out on Blu ray have since been released in Australia using the same transfer's/disc specs of the Scream Factory releases.

In regards to people not knowing about licensing. Not everyone has industry standard knowledge on these things.

That's because US distributors can only license titles to indie lables in the US.
Australian distributors can only license to indie Aussie labels, like Umbrella.

But you can't cross the "borders" of who owns what rights in what areas. It's illegal and Scream wouldn't have access to those regions anyway. In the rare case a rightsholder owns International/multi-national rights, that doesn't mean an independent lable like Scorpion/Shout/etc will be finacially able to sublicense all those rights or even be able to. The rightsholder almost always wants another, more native, company to distribute in other nations/regions, among a million other reasons... Its a little complex but it makes perfect sense.

And 99% of the time region coding is up to the rightsholder's standards. And Region Free doesn't mean it can be sold in other terrories, just that it will play on all players.

For the sake of argument, I don't think they'll have to worry about sales of Final Exam.

Something like Hellhole (a film I did not even know existed until they announced it), yeah, that one is pretty much guaranteed to sell low.

I think a safe business model would be to go after bigger titles with more consistency and only very occasionally drink from the 'obscure' well. That may be where things go anyway. Or not. Only time will tell.

Exactly. It's obvious licensing is not as simple Scorpian is making out.

In regards to the region-locking, I think Walter is saying it IS that simple

There is too much rights talk on this thread imo especially with those in the know having to tell people the same thing multiple times, it gets abit tedious for me. Much rather talk about the films scream ARE releasing (which some forget to do sometimes) the rest can pretty much be left for wishlist threads.

I was glad to hear Lisa Langlois and Lesleh Donaldson will be doing interviews for the "Deadly Eyes" release. Hopefully they will both talk in depth about all the genre films they have done.

On the contrary, I believe it is. And, to make a point of it, they are far simpler, to a layperson such as myself, than keeping track of the rights holders and subsequently divining the likelihood of their involvement with Scream! is. Which is something many folks on this board seem to be devoid of patience towards.

That said, and in the spirit of this thread, I cannot wait to blow my March Madness coupons on Without Warning, Dog Soldiers, and Leviathan. Also, I'm curious as to how Ravenous will sell. There doesn't seem to be much chatter around this title. I'm on the fence myself, but leaning against it. I saw it theatrically and bought the DVD upon its release, but only watched it once or twice more. I would like to see it again, but not once a year and that's my general thumb rule for purchasing a flick these days.

For anyone waiting in the Scanners double because the first one wasn't released yet...
Your prayers have been answered. Now you can enjoy the first three films in wondrous HD.

A release I'll get for sure, but my God that cover is hideous.
