I switch the blu-ray and DVD in the case as well. I don't do it right away, just whenever I finally watch it. Once the blu-ray is in the player, I move the DVD disc over.

I haven't bothered flipping the artwork though. It does seem weird they would put the DVD in the primary slot, considering that all of these are in blu-ray cases.

You understand that you cannot create more detail with an upconvert, right? The compression might be crap, but the screen captures are right there. It is not an upconvert.

As for CAT PEOPLE, does the German blu look better than the SF disc?
Argue with me all you want - I've seen it in motion and I posted screen caps comparing the US & UK dvds to the Scream! blu and it is an upconvert with a bit of contrast boosting. It might have better compression than the RAVENOUS blu, but there is no added detail.

And yes, CAT PEOPLE is the same, as the German blu and the Scream! blu use the same transfer that was released on the HD-DVD release.

Regardless, it doesn't matter. In the end we all vote with our money. If RAVENOUS gets down to $10 to $15 (with shipping) on Ebay, I'll probably bite.

So, someone explain to me how did Shout managed to screw up the video quality of a film from 1999?

If I might be so presumptuous as to hazard a guess... What I suspect is happening is that you're reading this and other/similar/related threads without keeping track of all the specific posters and whose opinion is whose. So what you see as a bunch of people erratically changing their opinions back and forth is really just a case of multiple individuals with largely consistent points of view all meshed together. I bet if you went back and noted exactly who said what, you'd find hardly anybody who both hypercritically trash some transfers while singing the praises of upconverts. Instead you'd probably find some people with strict standards for their blu-rays that expect a real high quality transfer every time, and some people less concerned with PQ, who probably barely notice the differences (possibly because they have smaller TVs, watch without their glasses on, care more about supplements, or who are just happier to get even slighter upgrades).

But then again, I could be wrong in this theory, because I haven't bothered to keep track of all the specific posters and whose opinion is whose.

Shout didn't really "screw it up." They just used the transfer that was given to them.

I cancelled my order so I can't say for sure, but the only thing they could be faulted for (beyond releasing a substandard disc) is if the disc also has excessive compression issues.

That's the main reason I x'd my order...I've been watching a lot of their films on my new setup and it's far too prevalent in their releases.

Were there even HD masters being struck in 1999? We're talking 7+ years before Blu-ray was introduced. More like an old analog laserdisc transfer. Laserdisc masters were still being used until the mid 2000's. Some still pop up today

To be fair there have to have been HD masters in some form going back to at least what were used for 1080i MUSE HiVision laserdiscs in the mid 90s.

Well... HD television was around before 1999... Japan had analog HD for a while before the US started testing theirs.

And anything that is being tested has been developed for years... so you might be surprised to find out how early "HD masters" existed before you ever saw one.

Where? The Canadian edition has been OOP for a year or two and going for well over $100 on amazon every time I've looked. If it's been repressed or something, I'd love to know about it.

Good lord that's ridiculous. I didn't believe you so I just went and checked and someone is asking over $200 for the Blu Ray on Amazon.ca. Now I'm really glad I picked up my copy last year. I got it off of ebay for like $7 brand new at the time. The Seller was clearing out his stock and had a ton of them.

Yeah, I got mine then and posted the deal here. I wish I had picked up a bunch of them now, lol. I have seen it pop up a time or two since then for around the same price. Set up a watch on eBay for it and have it alert you right away when they pop back up.

I would recommend seeking out one of the following DVDs to get a copy with anamorphic widescreen enhancement. The print is a little beat up, but very watchable.

Interesting timing with the KillerPOV podcast. Do we have any idea yet when that'll be available? I was expecting Scream to announce a title or two on Friday or Saturday given that it's their second anniversary, but they might just use this platform instead.

Watched FINAL EXAM last night, this was a blind buy for me, I had not seen the movie before but I remember the title and I must say FINAL EXAM is a "C" Grade slasher film at best. It was fun to watch in a "wow this is really bad" kinda way.

[Show spoiler]On the trailer it says "the night HE came back" obviously trying to capitalize on HALLOWEEN but the killer is never given a back story, it looks like he goes from College to College killing for no reason and there is no indication he had ever been at this College before, so how is he "Back"

FINAL EXAM would be fun to watch with your friends on a Saturday night just for something to do. On the Plus Side Scream Factory did a good job with the Transfer and the Extras.
