Since Shout didn't get Scanners, I kinda hope Criterion did snag it--because then, at least we know it's coming.

I would not be disappointed with Criterion releasing Scanners. Not at all...

Second Sight confirmed to me via email that the Scanners trilogy will be Region B, for contractual reasons.

I could still get it, since:

A) Their release of Return Of The Living Dead is technically Region B, but can be bypassed by hitting the Top Menu button on the remote, essentially making it region free (only the PAL-encoded extras may give some people trouble, but the movie and the More Brains! documentary should play fine). Just like the Something Weird release of Basket Case (technically Region A, but Region B players could play it by doing the same thing).

B) Even if that ends up not being the case with this one, I have a region free player.

It doesn't surprise me that this would be the case, since Arrow also had to region lock their formerly-region free release of The Funhouse once Shout got the rights. If the Criterion rumors are true, it would make further sense...

Why go the long route, and miss nice extra material?

In this case, the rumor is based entirely on a photograph of David Cronenberg visiting Criterion's offices.

That's not to say a Criterion release of Scanners is out of the question - in fact, I could definitely see it happening, it's just that at this point there's been so specific scuttlebutt from any 'inside' sources, as far as I know.

Where can I see this photo and, maybe more interesting, who took it? A criterion-enthusiast waiting in the bushes outside the office for the latest scoop? haha...

Second best scenario however; Anchor Bay releases it.

But yeah, Criterion or Anchor Bay are perfect candidates.

I'm surprised Scream is releasing Scanners III since that's in the Republic library, currently owned by Olive.

I think no,since Videodrome has already been released on Blu-ray.But,it could be in regards to Naked Picture upgrade (?).
I,for one, really can't see Scanners coming through CC.Not even by a long shot.

Hopefully it's my favorite Cronenberg movie "Shivers". That would be sweet.

Finally a Criterion title that someone can brag about owning.

....now where's that Ilsa Quadrilogy?

Okay was that whent he photo was posted, or the actual date in the photo? I'm just grasping at straws here, playing devil's advocate, that DC could be at Criterion for another film.

He was in town that week doing press for Cosmopolis. Rabid, Shivers, Scanners, The Brood are all out of print and owned by Cronenberg. If there is something brewing with Criterion, it will almost certainly be an early Cronenberg boxset.
