The formula obvoiusly worked because slasher films ruled the theaters and Video stores during the 80's. Speaking as one of the Outcast I love Slasher films

If you were a Jock or a Prom Queen you probably can't relate to slasher films.
Me a jock? No, i'm that shy, skinny "nerd" with little to no self esteem/confidence due to an ******* father. With a metabolism so fast that no matter how much I eat I pretty much can't gain wait, even at my current age of 33. In school when growing up girls would be the ones talking shit making fun of me and calling me a f%% more often than guys, believe me it's part of the reason I love seeing those ****s in the movies die horrible deaths. What you said isn't true, at all really. I've seen and known just as many "cool" kids that love or loved slasher films, why you may ask, because they like a good scare. Or in the guys case, bringing the girl to a movie that's going to scare her can in fact help you get some action.

Also, although I'm classified by our "society" as a nerd, most of the over the top ****ing nerds in slashers aren't relatable, and if they are to some people then I feel sorry for them because they probably had it worse than me growing up. Kind of like the characters on The Big Bang Theory, they're all ridiculous stereotypes for the most part.

Best of the modern horror remakes in my opinion.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2003
Dawn of the Dead 2004
The Hills Have Eyes 2006
Halloween 2007
Fright Night 2011

I actually liked Sorority Row. Reminded me a lot of an 80's slasher. Didn't care at all for Cry Wolf or Black Christmas remake.

I'm interested in this director's cut as well. Is he referring to a different cut of the movie, or is he referring to the footage that was cut to satisfy the censors?

I tried to watch Dawn of the Dead because I'm a huge James Gunn fan, but Zack Snyder's color palate makes it difficult for me to watch even five minutes of.

Yeah I would pretty much agree with your picks too. TCM, Dawn and Hills were the top ones though, I enjoy them probably more than the originals now.

Sad cause it's an awesome movie. Very intense, especially the opening and climax.

My list (which includes older titles) would be, in no particular order:

The Fly
The Blob
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Night of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead
Hills Have Eyes
Nightmare on Elm Street (though I hated the new Freddy look)
Sorority Row

TCM remake betrayed everything that made the original great. Pretty actors, art directed within an inch of it's life, also just ugly and depressing. I'm puzzled as to why many horror fans regard it so highly. I'd nominate 'Last House on the Left' as the best horror remake from the 2000's. Most I've seen are junk.

2 words... Jessica Biel. I actually like the movie overall, but her prescense ruined the film for me. She is/was and will forever be the 7th Heaven girl and I just could stand her in a horror movie because I knew she wasn't going to get killed, wasn't going to have any nudity, wasn't going to be believeable as a last girl, and overall just doesn't belong in that kind of film. Had she shocked me and gone and gotten herself killed in the film I'd likely think differently, but as is, she quite literally ruined that movie for me.

You do know, that if Tobe Hooper had more money, the original TCM would have been a LOT, LOT different eh? It's not like he chose it willingly to be a low budget, no name actor film.

Possibly, but many films could have been made different but their budgets and reality dictated and or necessitated more creative solutions which gave us the films we love. Jaws is another of these situations.

Yeah. Jaws would have been any other generic creature on the loose movie if George Lucas didn't ruin the shark prop.

Oh I agree about The Fly, The Blob, and Night of the Living Dead remakes. Those are all classics in my opinion. I just thought we were discussing horror remakes after 2000.

I have no idea what film Tobe Hooper would have made with more money. The film he did make- documentary-like realism, actors who look like normal people, spontaneity and black humor included- is a masterpiece, one of the greatest horror films of all time in my opinion. I suspect many of the people who love the remake aren't as fond of the original as I am.

I just re-watched the Black Christmas remake last night because someone had mentioned it here recently. For the most part I had forgotten about it. It was pretty terrible, almost to the point of not enjoying it at all. There are many B horror movies that I like, but this one just doesn't cut it for me.

As far as recent remakes go, I really, really enjoyed the Last House on the Left remake. Also really enjoyed the Texas Chainsaw remake. The Evil Dead remake, although very different tone from the original was still quite good.

Some others I enjoyed: Halloween (first one), the Ring, the Crazies, the Haunting and 13 Ghosts.

I remember being entertained by the My Bloody Valentine remake, but that could be because it was the first newer 3D movie I saw in theaters. I'd need to rewatch this one.

I loved the NoES remake. Liked the new ideas they implemented, even if they didn't realize them to their full potentials. My main beef was with the crappy CGI effects they used for Freddy's face. Seriously, the guy looked like the bastard son of Voldemort and the Lizard. Besides that I thought the Halloween remake was about as good as you could expect. I LOVED the Evil Dead remake, probably one of my favorite horror films of the past couple years.

Haven't seen too many other remakes yet, but I like watching them if nothing else to see a new interpretation of the story. Definitely going to watch Black Xmas, DotD, F13, The Thing, and My Bloody Valentine. I'll probably eventually get around to The Fog as well, even though I've heard its one of the worst remakes
