Maybe Image is distributing the upcoming Phantasm movie? That's the only thing I can think of as to why they'd have the others in the series.

Nobody knows if Anchor Bay has retained any distribution rights but if they do, another collaboration with Universal and Scream Factory for a complete set seems probable. I don't see SF releasing a set of all the films except for II just because they already released it. In a perfect world, they'll reissue it with a better encode/transfer and perhaps more extras. This set is almost a given, seeing as the much-anticipated 5th film is already "in the can" and ready for release. Wouldn't make much sense to release it alone (without a tie-in).
Assuming the rumor that Image has the films is true, it's not that surprising. The current head of acquisition for Image/RLJ, Mark Ward, used to work in a similar capacity for Starz/Anchor Bay. He probably knows exactly when Anchor Bay's rights will expire and exactly who to contact to license those properties for Image. He was probably the guy that licensed the films for Anchor Bay in the first place.

If I'm not mistaken, most of the films Image picked up from Anchor Bay in the past five years or so came from a single licensor, Lakeshore Entertainment (New World). Re-Animator and The Hills Have Eyes are the only exceptions I can think of.

Funny we should be talking Phantasm and Image, as I just heard from a friend and reliable source that the director does have the Phantasm films 1,3,4 - but he wants to release them through Image which is eye raising in itself. He is trying to get Part II from Universal as well..

Shout Factory SHOULD be the studio to release them IMO

Just wondering, why is it eye-raising that Don Coscarelli wants to have his films released through Image? It's his right to choose the preferred outlet for his films, if he owns the rights to them. And if that means, that Image will be the outlet for a blu ray release of these films in the future, then I certainly won't balk at that idea.

Unless something has changed at Image in the past 6 months, they're the last place anyone expects to be actively looking for content. They don't seem very interested in home video anymore, judging by their treatment (or lack of) of the Lakeshore catalog. The label is just not on anyone's radar.

Thank you Cine Have seen any decent Image blurays lately ? Idle Hands looked good, but they couldnt even port over a commentary or the alternate ending. The Hellraiser titles were barebones, ReAnimator was just average with better releases overseas .. so yeah Image more or less wouldnt seem like the best choice for blurays

Aren't you making a bit of a blanket statement there, or more to the point a broad generalization based on your own perception of Image? If Phantasm was to make its way to blu ray courtesy of Image, I don't think that those who are looking for the film on blu ray are going to miss it. If that's what you're saying. The film is too much of a coveted title, in terms of a blu ray release. The folks who are fans of the film and who want it on blu ray will certainly FIND it, even if it's released on the Image label. And more to the point, I don't want a blu ray (especially) of Phantasm with the encoding / compression issues that Scream is becoming infamous for.

I wonder if Shout Factory can get the rights to this film.

Yeah I would much rather have awesome collectors editions of the Phantasm franchise than bare bones releases from Image.

I think more the point he was making is that if you owned the rights to a famous cult horror movie franchise, the last place you'd expect them to take it is Image, who haven't been releasing much horror wise for a while, and what did put out, quite frankly was shit quality.

You may not want the Scream encoding, which I imagine most people would want improved, however its the lesser of two evils when it comes to Image. Image's releases were pitiful, with all kinds of problems and awful compression. Their Hellraiser releases sucked, The Hills Have Eyes was an upscale, Vamp had all kinds of problems, and Reanimator was a complete disaster, battered 35mm prints looked better than it, speaking from experience.

Like others have also said, barebones. If you were a cult director looking to have a great big release of your famous franchise, you'd want at least SOME special features.

So I completely understand their points regarding Image. No matter who releases it, it will be obvious yes. But from no recent activity, very very poor prior releases, and no special features, I can't see why someone would want to take their film to Image

A lot of pages. A lot of posts. So how will I know the list on page one is current or are the updates buried on one of the pages?

Relatively accurate. There are a few absent titles, such as Army of Darkness (slated for 10/27) and the Tales from the Crypt movies, Demon Knight and Bordello of Blood (both slated for 10/20).

The Phantasm films are my most anticipated for Blu, but if Image got them I would most likely not rush out and get them, unless Image changed their ways and actually put some effort into their releases for once.

They are one of the worst companies out there right now. Hellraiser 1 and 2 were barebones, even though the DVDs were stacked with extras, and they didn't look very good. Re-Animator at least included the extras, but again looked terrible. Hills Have Eyes included the extras but was an upscale. Vamp and Idle Hands didn't look very good and were again missing all of their the DVD extras. The Stuff and House they couldn't even bother to release on Blu. Do I need to go on?

I'll take compression issues over upscales and barebones discs any day of the week. I really hope Image does not have the Phantasm films! You know Scream would go all out for these films!

Just wanted to point out--Idle Hands actually looks very good on BD. They got it from Sony, after all.

Out of those lot, I would be super happy with a Critters box set, new cast/crew interviews, any behind the scenes footage they could scrape together etc etc

Dead Alive / Braindead, ain't gonna happen. They don't have the rights, and probably couldn't get them if they tried.

I'd also like the Phantasm box set... but maybe when Phantasm V comes out, so it can include that too.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre III and IV please!

I haven't seen the remake of A Kiss Before Dying but I just caught the original for the first time on TCM about a week or two ago. Absolutely adored it!
