I agree that some of the commissioned artwork is inappropriate in a sense that the characters portrayed have nothing to do with the film (Arrow, I'm looking at you) but I would never say that the commissioned art is ugly. It's different, but not terrible. Hopefully, if they feel the need to come up with radical new art, the studios would deem it appropriate to also include the original poster art wherever possible, which most have been doing. I like the new art for Society - it's less "busy" than some of Shout's new art plus it doesn't look like creative overkill.

I actually sort of dig that Society cover, but yes, the From Beyond one is an eyesore (no pun intended!). Then again, I can't stand gory covers anyway. Luckily, Shout will have the original art, so no worries there.

So let me get this straight:

This:

(which if you recall, is referring to the scene where Jeff sucks out the eyeball of who I believe to be Mrs. Yuzna).

is worse than this:

where the characters look nothing like their movie counterparts.

Okeydoke .. to each their own!

The Second Sight cover's character illustrations are far more authentic, but I find the extreme gore really unpleasant. Granted, it may be an accurate representation of the film, but I much prefer the more stylish and less graphic and harsh look of the Scream cover.

TBH I'm a bit turned off by these.

I prefer original poster art over any commissioned art work.

As do I. I always choose the original art for these (although I must admit the original They Live art is pretty bland, and I love the new/retro cover by The Dude), but it's great of Scream to provide that choice. I'm going to continue collecting the posters though, and eventually cover an entire wall with them in frames.

Yeah I like the new They Live cover as well. But for others, I wish the original art would be on the slipcover instead...

Like Noirfan. I find the overt gore off-putting. I also feel that the Scream Fatory art captures that entire feel of the film than whats on the Second Sight version.

Although the art may seem more cartoon-y on the Scream Factory one its a better representation of the actors..IMHO.

I've met Coombs, he's an awesome guy. I know he was very, very pleased with what Arrow did with the cover for Beyond Re-Animator.

I like the Second Sight FB art much better than the Scream Factory art for the title.

I'll second that. It's a shame because I usually really like Jeff Zornow.

He should have lost the resonator jellyfish because part of the problem with the art is that it looks too crowded. At least in my opinion.

While I'm not a huge fan of any of these movies being discussed, I would take that artwork over any photoshopped debacle any day of the week! I think SF should be commended for doing this.

they are both awful!!!! Why don't these studios make it easier for everyone and just release movies with the original one-sheet art that showed in movie theaters?????

Scream will be including the original art on the reverse, as they have for every release.

Which is the best way to do it.

The commissioned stuff is all subjective, if i understand it correctly in same cases studios may have trouble getting licensing or dont want to pay for the licensing of the original artwork. Please correct me if i am wrong.

(some of) You guys are ridiculous. How many movie labels give you a choice for cover art?

You are right, it isn't for nothing if I always say that horror is a genre I wouldn't touch if I become a label owner someday... Too much trouble and too many "crazy obsessive" fans.

Case in point: sixty-three hundred posts (and counting!) in the NOTLD thread, the vast majority of them mindlessly (and pointlessly) rehashing the same complaint over and over again, with ever-increasing hyperbole and emotional hand-wringing.
