They release some bigger films to pad out the business and use the excess to fund the smaller stuff. It makes sense from a business standpoint, maybe not a fan standpoint but it's how they keep going. Shout does the same thing, they release My Little Pony which lets the money flow in and that allows them to release the original japanese version of Power Rangers or what ever smaller niche type releases the fans are asking for. We are a very small group compared to the mass audience, sometimes we forget that.
Well, it's perhaps why I never involved myself in indulging in business/management courses in college (instead going on to major in Journalistic Arts with a concentration in Expository Writing), but I just don't get the standpoint; isn't there capital needed to release "the bigger films" too? I suppose that's how these "alternative studios" (i.e. Scream/Shout, Image Entertainment, at one point Artisan et al) operate, in that they acquire the rights to certain films that, to many (myself included) don't believe necessarily need new releases (unless something was seriously fouled up transfer, audio mix or features-wise) and rerelease 'em...but I do understand where you're coming from with regard to the fact that as fanatics, we're not the "mass audience"...

Quote:
I'm with you on the double/triple/quadrupal dip thing. I don't like buying the same film multiple times. Carpenter gets the exception for me as long as the releases justify themselves with better transfers or special features.
Funny you mention this; I am a DIEHARD Carpenter fan, so I know where you're coming from...it's just that I'm not a huge, over-the-top proponent of special features, commentary, etc. -- I'd rather have a much improved video transfer or audio mix. Now, I understand the jump to Blu-ray/1080p naturally provides that in a lot of cases, but I've also been burned with many double dips I indulged in (with catalog titles) and now I am VERY careful with my purchases (I have found that most catalog titles I repurchase on Blu aren't that much better looking than the DVD I replaced -- UNLESS the DVD was a seriously crappy non-anamorphic disaster; this also has to do with the upconversion quality of my Oppo BDP-83 BD player, I am sure).

Now, as a Carpenter fan, I have most, if not all, of his best works on standard DVD -- including Escape From New York/Escape From L.A., The Fog, The Thing, Ghosts of Mars, Vampires, Halloween, Christine -- and really don't have any issues with the way these discs look in standard definition. When I bought the Starz!/Anchor Bay BD release of Halloween when it came out, I was so put off by the color timing issue and the grain structure, I immediately went right back to the THX DVD of the film that I prefer (even with all its warts like severe aliasing in certain places and an inherent muddiness to the image at times). I understand that the last release of this title, the Anniversary cut in the digibook edition as well as in the entire Halloween franchise collection, fixes some of these elements (Cundey was supposedly called in to re-supervise the transfer) but I just can't bring myself to keep buying this title over and over and over again like many people do...I pop in my 1999 THX DVD and let my Oppo do the upconverting thing on October 31 each year...

All of THAT being said -- I am glad we agree on the ridiculous amounts of re-dipping; it's something I am going to have to be VERY careful about when I get into 4K/UltraHD Blu-ray...

Oh, I'm totally with you on Waxwork (though not the sequel) -- I bought the Artisan "double feature DVD" that includes both films on one disc, as it seems to be the only way to get them in North America, and while it's certainly watchable (depending upon what kind of scaler you have in your player), this film (the first Waxwork) needs a remastering and audio remix.

AWESOME cheesy little '80s horror flick that I grew up with, taping it off HBO and always watching it...someone needs to get the rights to it and bring it to Blu-ray.

On the IFC Midnight side of things, presumably The Dead Room and Sacrifice will be announced soon.

Thanks for the link. Needs lots more support, though. Come on, people! To the many that haven't seen it, it's well worth it! Awesome 80's entertainment.

I would love to see Waxwork 1 & 2 get a Blu-ray release from Scream. I love those movies. I had the DVD until my son stepped on it years ago.

So perhaps we will get Exorcist III: Legion after all this year.

I'm curious if they have anymore "Special Special Editions" planned like ROTLD. It sold like hotcakes, wondering if they'll be doing another one soon. The Thing would be a great one to do (I'm imagining all the bonus posters).

Hopefully it gets a new scan and I can finally retire my HD DVD, as the transfer is slightly better than the bluray, but the player is a pain to operate.

Fangoria says it's getting a new 2K transfer.

German label NSM will release Fright Night II in a MediaBook edition sometime soon - it's your only option

It seems that people still think that Scream Factory is the only option when it comes to high profile / popular catalog horror flicks. If Fright Night II is indeed with producer or some company that is not LG, it could be very well released through Arrow.

a few things....

guess its time to get back into Scream Factory. i'm about 100 titles off though :-/ i have every title up to Tales From The Crypt / Vault of Horror, but with all the early 2015 announcements like blacula, love at first bite, vampires kiss, ifc nonsense, complete inundation of double bills, etc, i just lost interest and stopped buying all together. but dang if some of these recent announcements haven't got my blood pumping again.

titles i'll be picking up in the next couple weeks or so:
Ssssssssssssssss
jeepers 1 &2,
dog soldiers
ghost town
tales from the crypt (both)
nightmares

any others i should pick up between Tales from the Crypt / Vault of Horror, and today?

what about rollercoaster? that was announced, wasnt it? i don't see it on the OP though. i read the posts on here between last decemember and today the past week, (and i had previously read the first like 1300 pages before at a different time) and there were several posts about that, and jeff mentioned on facebook that "its been a real 'rollercoaster'" so i'm confused. hah.

also, since there are 5 stores in the metro (and 2 hastings within an hours drive if i'm really freakin desperate) that all carry and sell scream realeases on the regular, i can pretty much get a slipped CE of anything, so i buy those locally to ensure slips for conformity, but as far as the IFC/Chiller titles, is there a database or something that says which ones originally shipped slips, and didnt, to ensure i get the desired version?

and i just got the chucky box set yesterday, and read this morning on here basically everyone is pointing to possibly announcing 1-3 lol gotta love timing! hah.

thanks for reading my diatribe

Rollercoaster is designated to the standard Shout Factory title, rather than the Scream one. Certainly borderline though.

How about releasing or trying to release Waxwork 1 & 2 and Sundown movies. They would make great additions to your catalog.

The Waxwork movies are with Lionsgate (everything on the image I posted 1 page back is) and are therefore not something Scream Factory can touch. At this point if it's a fairly well known film and it hasn't been released on Blu Ray yet, it's likely either with Lionsgate, Warner, or possibly Paramount and not a title Scream Factory can get to. There's a reason the last several announcements have been for re-releases.

Thanks I hate it when I missed movies, especially movies already released by Scream, but you know with a massive wish list it can be hard to look though them all, without help

Great news about Scream Factory releasing The Thing. Could this mean titles like An American Werewolf in London, Big Trouble in Little China, and The Fly are in the pipeline as well?

I'm still hoping Scream can get a deal for some Paramount titles in the near future as well. Besides some of the obvious horror titles Paramount owns, I was thinking the other day that Eddie Murphy's The Golden Child could be a good addition to the Scream line. It's not necessarily a horror movie but definitely has some strong horror elements throughout.
