(Post from the ROTLD thread)

IT'S HERE!!!! (Click Spoiler for pics)

[Show spoiler]

It was packaged immaculately, as you can see. (I LOVE the Scream Factory "Deluxe" paper too!) I was expecting to see a large cardboard "pocket" envelope like I received with my "Army of Darkness" pre-order but this new packaging kept the posters crisp and the 2nd slip flawless (one tiny tear on the bottom of the "green" slip that was shrinkwrapped but I chalk that up to manufacturer error during the cutting process - nothing to complain about).

I cannot wait to sink my teeth into this later tonight!!!

The inclusion of the workprint is kind of a big deal - they should've advertised that more prominently methinks

Gonna pick up a cheap DVD of Raising Cain so I can see it before deciding whether or not to pick up the Blu at some point. Found it at a store recently for like $2. De Palma's own comments about it from his documentary retrospective piqued my interest.

I've never seen or known of a work print. What's the differences? Anything major?

I watched a few minutes just now and it's not in good condition by any means, to the point of SF including a disclaimer that an HD version does not exist and they did the best they could with what they had to work with before it begins. It's very dark and it was presumably pulled from a VHS source.

Hardcore fans are more than likely over the moon about it being included. I skipped through a few chapters. Meh. I don't know the film well enough to pick out differences between that and the finished product. To each their own though.

What's Shout!/Scream! Factory's opinion on importing movies for local release? Could any ultra-violent movies from Japan ever have a chance of being released by them?

They've done a few. Audition comes to mind.

On the podcast they essentially shot down the idea of more foreign horror, citing poor sales of the recent Miike title. Then again, they appear to have deceived us on a couple of things, so who knows?

Good news about SDCC. I trust it will be a panel and not just a stand with exclusive items.

Watched Gun Woman last night. Surprisingly fun low budget action. Kurando doesn't really direct like modern Japanese directors, you can tell he's more influenced by 80s Cannon films, so there is less obvious CGI and in fact in the extras, you can see Asami really doing a majority of her own stunts. I mean, what stunt double would be an exact match for her build, anyway? And on top of that she's completely naked for most of her action sequences and you'd have to get a double with a very similar build as her and Asami has a pretty unique, um, body.

As such, the stunt work can look a bit clunky, but it has a authenticity to it that you know they're not shooting around Asami and switching in doubles like most actioners. And she's emoting super hardcore here--physically she's like in pain and pouring blood for most of the last half hour.

Can you tell I really like Asami?

I wonder if there will be a sequel like the end teases.

Yeah I suspect they were being honest also. Guess I was just trying to give us some hope!

A work print is essentially the rough version of a film before the final cut is post-produced and submitted for release. There will almost always be snippets of footage, and, in some cases, entire sequences, cut out and some scenes may be end up rearranged in the final cut.

Sorry if that came across incorrectly, I know what a work print is. I was more specifically wondering what was different between the two versions of this film for those that have seen them.

It's a fun movie, albeit one that's basically a "Greatest Hits" mixtape of every previous De Palma suspense thriller, with gobs of eccentric humor. Just don't take it too seriously, and you'll be fine.

I think Scream Factory diehards and "people that like to read subtitles" are groups with extremely small overlap. I think J-horror is going to have to come from Arrow (and MAYBE a couple titles from Criterion, if they're important enough) given the way catalogs have been built so far. I miss the good ol' days where Anime companies would put out a fair amount of live action movies.

I picked up that on DVD along with a VHS of Mission: Impossible (as I had only seen the most recent two in the series) yesterday so I could begin a binge of every De Palma I hadn't seen. Luckily, Troma's YouTube channel has The Wedding Party too. And my library has The Untouchables. The hardest one to get is seriously gonna be Greetings (which I've been trying to track down for 3+ years, as I've already seen Hi, Mom). But anyway, I'm most looking forward to watching Cain.
