Ebay's a pain in the ass to sell off old copies, but Amazon is a breeze. Takes ten seconds to list something there, even if you just say "Like New". I've made back quite a lot on older stuff I'm ditching, including DVD's, when upgrading to Blu. Super mainstream titles are worthless, you won't even get a penny, but there is still some decent money to be made on other stuff if you play your cards at the right moment. Selling off older copies sometimes pays for the Blu upgrade almost completely (as others have said, titles like Criterion retain value - sell off the old DVD version for $20 and buy the Blu during their 50% off sale for $20).

Trading in anything to a retail store like Amoeba will get you peanuts so them offering you 50 cents is no indication at all of what you could get for the item on your own. Someone could be trading in CC's Third Man Blu and they'd still only want to give you 50 cents. Not even worth the hassle, they want to pay you nothing and then mark the stuff up at least 1,000%. Sell direct. It may be a hassle to some to have to list and pack things, but I have bubble mailers everywhere, packing tape, and go to the post office all the time anyway, so it's just easy extra cash rolling in from discs I no longer want.

The totally worthless mainstream ones get put in a box and donated to a library.

In Southwestern Ontario there's a chain called The Beat Goes On that sells used CDs, DVDs and the like. If they weren't around, I probably wouldn't bother either, but as it stands I can walk into one of half a dozen locations with a couple of bags full, have them assessed on the spot, and walk out with cash twenty minutes later.

True, if I sold them independently online I'd probably make a wee bit more, but it's hardly worth the effort.

Last time I got $210 dollars for the lot, which I promptly squandered on further acquisitions. The circle of life.

In NYC, I just dump them at Bookoff. They'll give about a dollar a disc. For me, it's not worth the amount of effort it would take to get more than that for most of the DVDs. I will say, though, that even over six months they have gotten more and more stingy, and I have a feeling that part of their algorithm accounts for repeat sellers and reduces their payment in some way. But I also held back on the ones that I could sell for more, I'm going to put them all on ebay at the same time.

Quote:
To some people, every dollar counts.
For me, I set a goal that I would spend an average of $5 per disc on an upgrade, so the extra dollar back per movie helps me get closer to that goal. [I'm at 210 / $6.30 avg, with all of the Criterions and non-OOP Twilight Times upgraded.]

Sunrise Records in Etobicoke pays around $4 - $5 for DVDs & Blus. More if its a rare title or OOP.

Anyone ever hear of a flick called Black Moon Rising... It was a John Carpenter flick and starred a young Linda Hamilton and Tommy Lee Jones...Robert Vaughn played the heavy... Wonder if Shout has any plans to do this one... It would be right up there alley

I think that one is part of the New World Pictures library, which Arrow seems to be getting their hands on.

I just saw that as part of this DVD set...

It wasn't nearly as entertaining as I hoped it would be considering the names involved. However, it was definitely worth a watch.

It is a cool set and I own it. I wish Reform School Girls would get a BD release.

Arrow Video released Reform School Girls on DVD earlier this year. IIRC, the transfer was not good enough for blu-ray.

I'd really like to see Scream Factory acquire Loved Ones, and Murder Party.
The director of Murder Party told me 10 years ago on Myspace that he was trying to get a Blu-Ray copy released.... Guess that never happened.... LOL... I would think with the popularity of Blue Ruins, Green Room that someone would work on releasing it....

murder party is streaming on amazon or shudder.

i highly doubt it gets a blu release, even though i would love to have one. i dont know the sales numbers, but blue ruin and green room seem to be niche (and i am proud to be part of that niche.)

consider how many people cried and moaned about the hype for blue ruin and the hype for green room and then the hype for green room after seeing blue ruin.

Do you pay sales tax for California with Scream's store? I want to pick up one of those limited titles, but not being in the US it's a bit of a headache. Do they take the money at time of ordering for pre-orders or when the product ships?

Tuff Turf, you guys. Now that demands a Blu-Ray.

Just for the record, so people stop asking Scream to release them, Lionsgate has just announced Blu-Rays of Return of the Living Dead III, Waxwork 1&2, and CHUD II: Bud the CHUD. All as a part of their Vestron series.

I had to frantically go search the Vestron thread as I thought you were kidding. Low and behold there was the announcement.

I watched The Beast Within last night. Sick, nasty, and bloody disgusting. The entire film is worth it for that transformation sequence alone. I think I remember TripleHBK mentioning that before as well. It was so putrid!

The guy playing Michael is a really poor actor; that's the only true blemish on the film for me. Other than that, very cool!

The Beast Within is a blast. Here's my take on the movie after watching it for the first time recently.
