Earlier tonight, I watched my Scream Factory Blu-ray of The Pack.
![]() I really really enjoyed this film. When a pack of vicious wild dogs develop an affinity for human flesh and besiege a remote Australian farmhouse, a family of four must struggle to survive through the most terrifying night of their lives. The Pack benefits greatly from the use of real attack dogs in lieu of computer-generated effects through most of the film, and the tangibility of their presence provides a real urgency and menace from beginning to end. The sound effects are chilling, with howling and occasional growls heard by the family as they hide indoors. Because of the use of the real animals, the attack scenes convey a remarkable air of brutality, despite the fact that most of the violence is left to the imagination due to the inability of the filmmakers to show too much with regard to the interactions of the dogs with the actors. The end result is a low budget movie that really packs a punch. The Pack also goes a long way with its lean story by refusing to short-change the human characters. The mother and father are struggling to make ends meet, but their efforts are not enough to keep them out of trouble with the mortgage on the farmhouse. The 18 year-old daughter hates living in an isolated area with no cell phone coverage, and her desire to move to the city creates friction between her and the parents. The young boy is coming of age and learning to deal with fearful situations at a time when he is also able to sense that things are not going well with the family and their farm. When the dog attacks begin in a horrifyingly abrupt manner, we have already invested some time in the family's life situation, and we hope the best for them. Anna Lise Phillips, who plays the mother, is one of the most beautiful actresses whom I've seen in recent memory, and it's a shame that she is not well known on these shores. Those of you who are enthusiastic dog lovers may want to proceed with caution, since The Pack does inevitably show some dogs in a bad way once the family begins to turn the tables. I'm hard-pressed, however, to imagine anyone not being scared by these wild dogs, since they are not depicted with any semblance of sympathy. The dogs are as scary as hell, and, when I'm trail running at night in the near future, I'll be unable to look at the eyes in the trees the same way ever again. This movie will not win any awards for originality, but it delivers in spades for what it is. I found the Blu-ray to be quite eye-catching with regard to the detail, the colors, and the night scenes. Every growl comes through in style on the audio front as well. There's only one prominent extra, a seven-minute-plus "Making of" documentary that does a good job of acquainting us with the cast and crew. |

Finally got around to watching "The Town that Dreaded Sundown" tonight. It was.... interesting. I do question how this film has a 7.0 on this site, and for that matter why it's even considered a horror film. It was most certainly not what I was expecting to say the least. I'm rarely disappointed in my blind buys but man this one was a rough watch. Best thing about this film was when the actor was breathing heavily inside the mask as it created an effective effect.
Man were some of the nighttime sequences rough to. I won't go so far to call them "Grindhouse" but the sheer number of white specks, flickers and print anomalies were surprising. I think what I found most interesting but also distracting however was the bizarre narration that runs throughout the film. I am glad that's a stylistic choice that never caught on. |

The Original. I debated watching the remake tonight as well (for the first time) but decided to save it for later. You're actually the first person I've heard talk poorly of the sequel. Most comments I've read seemed to really enjoy it. I'm currently watching Jaws at the moment as I decided to have my own little Shark week and Marathon Jaws 1-4 over the next 3 days.

I always wait for those and preorder everything I want coming out. It ends up being a pretty good deal considering some also come with a poster.

Just noticed in the review that the new disc contains an episode of Science Fuction Theatre...in HD. Has anybody watched that yet? I've got the DVD set and that's one of the better episodes. Would love to hear how that looks.

I had some errands to run in downtown Atlanta earlier today, so I stopped by my favorite indie record store, Criminal Records, and picked up two Scream Factory releases, Phantom of the Paradise (with the slipcover in perfect condition) and Exterminators of the Year 3000.
I've been wanting to get Phantoms of the Paradise for a while now, but Exterminators of the Year 3000 was a spur-of-the-moment purchase, simply because I happened to have it right there in my hand at the store. Still, it looks like some good fun with car crashes and such. Incidentally, I also bought the recent CD reissue of the self-titled debut album from The House of Love. I used to have that album on cassette tape back in the late 1980s when I was in high school, and I wanted the trip down memory lane. So glad to be revisiting these songs now. It's a really enjoyable episode, and a great inclusion for an extra on this Invasion of the Body Snatchers set. I love Marie Windsor, who starred in many classic-era films noir that I own. |
