They really need to get a deal with Sony. They're the only other company licensing titles out, and I wonder if they could convince them to let them do extras if they give the rights to the produced extras to Sony after their deal expires--or something.
I would also rather Arrow released Last House on the Left. They gave The Hills Have Eyes fantastic treatment and if they could do that for Last House, I'd be thrilled. |

I watched The Final Terror earlier this morning.
If "Don't Go in the Woods" is the backwoods killer slasher at its most hilariously inept and "Just Before Dawn" is the backwoods killer slasher at its best, I say TFT falls somewhere in the middle. Some good kills (as sporadic as they were) and decent cast, but even at a brief 82 minutes, it felt a bit longer than that due to the somewhat slow place. It didn't meander like crazy as something like "Dust Devil" or "The Slayer", but it was definitely on the slow side. Sound quality is pretty good, but man...the PQ is pretty rough. Like...really rough. Hell Night might be receiving a lot of flack for its rough PQ, but I feel like TFT suffers even more from significantly even worse materials used to make the transfer than Hell Night (which was just a bit on the raw side, but still easily presentable in spite of missing footage and a lot of damage). The Scream Factory team did their best with what was available, but it results in a rather mediocre, muddy looking film. ...so yeah. Decent movie. Not one of the best, not one of the worst. There's better movies out there, but there's no harm wasting an hour and a half sitting through this one. Just proceed with caution in regards to the presentation. NEXT UP!: Final Exam. |

I think that Scream Factory's work to bring The Final Terror back to life is commendable.
I really enjoy this film, mostly thanks to some impressive camerawork that was accomplished before the days of Steadicam, and some splendidly beautiful wilderness shots that do an admirable job of setting up the location as a character all its own. More than anything, though, I just can't get enough of movies about bad things happening to people while they're in the woods. Final Exam is a lot of fun. I love how the movie immerses us in the college life during finals week. I could have watched that everyday amusing stuff for hours. |

I graduated from Georgia Tech in 1995. Every night at midnight during finals week, all of the students would scream at the top of their lungs for a few seconds, because this was a longtime campus tradition. It was really something else to hear hundreds and hundreds of people screaming at once.

I can't speak to the titles in the new announcement but I'm okay with stuff I'm unfamiliar with at this point. I'm really glad the past decade has been a focus on the "foundational" films and now we can move on to new stuff that has me less stressed about immediately getting a copy, tho' I do know there are still some classics that have yet to be properly released. But with all these damn merges things are getting less likely for those rather than more so.

Yeah, but who the hell is gonna purchase the ENTIRE catalog these days? I think that's a mistake. Gonna end up putting all those great titles into Dawn of the Dead territory.

I'm also surprised Scream hasn't continued to release new indie horrors. I was totally on board with that. Has that well dried up? I'd LOVE them to get the rights to Astron-6's Father's Day and put out a proper release with the correct cut and the accompanying feature length No Sleep, No Surrender (what the hell every happened to that?)

[QUOTE=TripleHBK;14544128]There won't be any substantial "big" announcements any longer so long as Scream Factory continues to primarily focus on the MGM catalog. Re-releases of well known films, steel books, and then occasional offerings such as what was announced today are it unless new agreements can be reached. It's a shame since the Corman catalog still has a handful of really fun requested titles along with a mountain of other films to mine though that seems untouchable for the time being.
Hey TripleHBK, I wonder if you could shed a little light on this for me since I haven't been around the forums for that long. I've seen it mentioned on the Scorpion Releasing forum that Roger Corman is trying to sell his Film Catalog and he isn't licensing out anymore movies, could this be the reason why we haven't seen Shout Factory do Blu-ray upgrades for the likes of Firecracker, TNT Jackson, Not of This Earth, Streetwalkin, The Arena etc. Also do you happen to know when Shout's Corman License Expires ? I want to get the Corman Blu's, I hope they don't go out of print anytime soon like some Shout releases have. Thank you man, I appreciate the help ![]() |

It's about as fun as having a root canal, I'd rather watch my toenails grow than watch that sh*te again. Kim Newman's review for the movie on the Video Nasties documentary dvd is hilariously spot on.

So I just got through watching Final Exam.
I have to disagree with Gerby and agree with The Great Owl. It was definitely a pretty good sit and on par with Hell Night in terms of enjoyment (I rather sit through Final Exam two times before doing a double feature of The Slayer and Slaughter High). [Show spoiler] Yeah, the killer wasn't anything special, but the rest of the characters being well developed actually helped balance things out a little and despite the small body count, way more stuff happened in this than in The Final Terror, which I watched earlier this morning, as previously stated in this thread. Anyhow, Final Exam took me by surprise. Its definitely a fun, earnest little gem that I came in with zero expectations for. ...I do still have New Year's Evil to watch, but my Italian 4K UHD Dawn of the Dead is showing up tonight, so that easily takes higher priority than seeing a New Year's Eve horror film several days late. |

Glad you enjoyed Final Exam. Something about the slow-building, atmospheric, and the characters really make it a slasher favorite for me. The lead is excellent, and the pecking order is fairly unexpected.
Then again, I saw it for the first time just months after I graduated from college/moved back home. It really does a great job capturing the abandoned campus at-night-vibe. |

As for when Scream Factory's license runs out... only they could answer that for sure. Given that most of their Blu Ray releases came out in Summer 2010 however, it's reasonable to assume that we are nearing the end of those licenses. If I were to guess (and to be clear this is exactly what I am doing) I would speculate that stuff like Piranha, Humanoids from the Deep, and some of the other Corman films could see their licenses run out in 2019 or 2020 if they were 10 year agreements and no extension was granted. I picked up Humanoids and The Stepfather last year fearing that the licenses may be expiring soon, and this post has reminded me that I need to pick up Piranha and Forbidden World as well. I had thankfully picked up Audition years before it went out of print and if you can learn anything from this forum it's that when it comes to horror films on Blu Ray, it's better to buy right away as you never know when things will disappear. Sometimes it takes years, other times, as is the case with the phantasm box set, it takes just a few weeks. |

But the Oregon/California (sharing some territory with Just Before Dawn) wilderness setting is jaw-dropping, the isolated cabin (Rituals anyone?) is creepy and the score is kind of cool in a kooky way. As a great outdoors/survival guru, I can appreciate The Final Terror as a minor gem. |

re: last few posts
I'm glad I have both FINAL TERROR and FINAL EXAM in my collection as they have a nice nostalgia factor for me originally seeing them on HBO or something when I was a teen-ager in the 80's.... Neither one of them are top tier titles by any means but they have a creepy vibe of isolation that works pretty well... ![]() New Year's Evil is grindhouse trash with no redeeming qualities to me...... ![]() |
