RE: Piranha II and Sony
When they made the original (now deleted) announcement on 09/29/2017, they made the following (also deleted) comments: Quote:
Quote:
As far as I'm aware, Sony's role in the delay has not been confirmed or denied by Scream Factory. All that was specified was that the delay was "...prompted by some unexpected issues that arose from the project after we announced it..." When the Amazon preorder went up a couple weeks ago they responded to an inquiry as follows: Quote:

(I posit that the most likely reason for this is that the international producers still own the original negative, so any releases need to go through them for sources; since they don't own the Cameron cut, they don't want to pay for the rights to release it.) So the people they contacted would only have the rights to what is generally considered the inferior (but much more widely-released) cut of the film. |

As for sub licensing Sony titles, I'd rather have a bare bones release than no release at all. If that's what it takes for SF to release some of their titles then so be it. Its better than letting their back catalog rot in Hell forever and never to be released. Special features aren't the end all be all.
Also, I find it especially weird that Sony randomly released 976-Evil last year in what looked like it could be a new line starting, but we haven't heard anything about any other titles coming out. Or maybe it just didn't sell well enough for them and they decided not to release anymore? Warner on the other hand seems to be doing right by the fans and releasing more of their back cataloge through their Warner Archive line. Lionsgate as well is doing their thing with the Vestron line (however so slowly) Paramount on the other hand seems to be doing jack squat though. So SF need to desperately try to make a deal. Open up those pockets. Otherwise SF will be doomed eventually if they don't make a deal with one of these studios. |

And let's not forget that a lot of Sony titles have extras from the DVD era already.
But I'm in agreement that there must be more to the story on Sony not letting Shout! make new extras... maybe they will allow the creation of new extras, they just want to OWN the extras once the licensing deal expires ? Idk. |

But Sony then owns the special features do they not? Sony's policy has always been stated that no new special features can be created for it's titles. After many conversations on the topic I sort of came to the conclusion that they are ok with special features so long as they take ownership of them. If my thoughts are correct, this means that Shout who likes to tout their special features as a major selling point would have to hand off control of whatever they created thereby losing out on potential licensing revenue in the future in the event another company does a release of their own and would want to include them.

I wouldn't rule out any potential deals SF might procure with other studios. All it takes is the right guy with the right connection. They haven't made any progress towards Paramount or Sony, that I know of, but maybe someday they'll crack one of these big markets and get some new and interesting titles for the CE line. SF has to be making a profit off these titles; they've pretty much reinvented the horror CE for the physical media collector/horror film fan.

It’s really great news that this will be an intermediate scan after all as opposed to a film scan, like what they’d done with Dawn of the Dead.

Something is stopping other studios from mining the Sony catalog so if you have other information I'd love to hear it. Speaking of which.... any info to share on The Unnameable? Specifically, any idea on which quarter of the year this could see release?
