(I could be off in my recollection though) I think the delay in that title was speculated to be because of a challenge from Sony or another party in regards to the film and whether or not Shout Factory can legally release it in the US. If any part of that is true then I would wager that no deal with Sony exists.
It was never confirmed but the consensus was that Shout licensed a version of the film directly from the Producers but Sony stepped in and stopped it for whatever reason. After the postponement, a preorder link materialized, which has since been shot down by Shout. If this is another one of Shout's fake denials (like with Hell Night) then I would interpret it to be a potential Shout-Sony deal on the basis of Shout being allowed to go forward with releasing the Blu-ray. But all of this is still speculation so who knows.

Interesting. Given the rollout of Hell Night and the issues that accompanied that release, perhaps Piranha II is another title in a similar situation. Maybe the announcement was made before materials had been sourced and as a result Shout is again trying to make due with what they have and/or locate better materials.

RE: Piranha II and Sony

When they made the original (now deleted) announcement on 09/29/2017, they made the following (also deleted) comments:

As far as I'm aware, Sony's role in the delay has not been confirmed or denied by Scream Factory. All that was specified was that the delay was "...prompted by some unexpected issues that arose from the project after we announced it..."

When the Amazon preorder went up a couple weeks ago they responded to an inquiry as follows:

This is a mistake and is in the process of being corrected. We have no updates on Piranha II at this time.

Sony has no such policy. Every company who has licensed from Sony (Criterion, Grindhouse, Twilight Time, even Mill Creek) has created new special features.

It's kind of even more complicated than that; there are two cuts, the international cut and the director's re-cut. The producers fired Cameron at some debated point (either towards the end of shooting or immediately after it), and then they put out the international cut. When it was getting a US release, Cameron contacted the US distributor and convinced them to let him re-cut the footage. (Whoever the original distributor was, the rights to the Cameron cut and the US distribution rights to the film wound up with Sony.) This cut was supposedly released theatrically, and was definitely released on a limited edition laserdisc, but all subsequent releases (including the Sony DVD) have been the international cut.

(I posit that the most likely reason for this is that the international producers still own the original negative, so any releases need to go through them for sources; since they don't own the Cameron cut, they don't want to pay for the rights to release it.)

So the people they contacted would only have the rights to what is generally considered the inferior (but much more widely-released) cut of the film.

As for sub licensing Sony titles, I'd rather have a bare bones release than no release at all. If that's what it takes for SF to release some of their titles then so be it. Its better than letting their back catalog rot in Hell forever and never to be released. Special features aren't the end all be all.

Also, I find it especially weird that Sony randomly released 976-Evil last year in what looked like it could be a new line starting, but we haven't heard anything about any other titles coming out. Or maybe it just didn't sell well enough for them and they decided not to release anymore?

Warner on the other hand seems to be doing right by the fans and releasing more of their back cataloge through their Warner Archive line.

Lionsgate as well is doing their thing with the Vestron line (however so slowly)

Paramount on the other hand seems to be doing jack squat though. So SF need to desperately try to make a deal. Open up those pockets. Otherwise SF will be doomed eventually if they don't make a deal with one of these studios.

And let's not forget that a lot of Sony titles have extras from the DVD era already.

But I'm in agreement that there must be more to the story on Sony not letting Shout! make new extras... maybe they will allow the creation of new extras, they just want to OWN the extras once the licensing deal expires ? Idk.

But Sony then owns the special features do they not? Sony's policy has always been stated that no new special features can be created for it's titles. After many conversations on the topic I sort of came to the conclusion that they are ok with special features so long as they take ownership of them. If my thoughts are correct, this means that Shout who likes to tout their special features as a major selling point would have to hand off control of whatever they created thereby losing out on potential licensing revenue in the future in the event another company does a release of their own and would want to include them.

I wouldn't rule out any potential deals SF might procure with other studios. All it takes is the right guy with the right connection. They haven't made any progress towards Paramount or Sony, that I know of, but maybe someday they'll crack one of these big markets and get some new and interesting titles for the CE line. SF has to be making a profit off these titles; they've pretty much reinvented the horror CE for the physical media collector/horror film fan.

It’s really great news that this will be an intermediate scan after all as opposed to a film scan, like what they’d done with Dawn of the Dead.

How totally unnecessary. Really scraping the barrel, Shout.

Honestly, it's a pretty strong list of films.

If I had to list my favorite five it would probably be:

1. Ginger Snaps
2. The Thing
3. Jeepers Creepers
4. Halloween III
5. The Return of the Living Dead
