If people weren't so afraid of importing REGION FREE titles, they wouldn't be so dependent and rely on Scream Factory! to release things for them

Something interesting to note - the movies being featured in this year's live tour of MST3K are The Brain (1988) and Deathstalker. MST3K is owned by Shout now (though Shout doesn't own all of the movies featured in the new episodes) but it's possible we may see The Brain on Blu-ray from them in the future.

TCM2 is fun. It’s witty and it has a lot to say about mid-80s socioeconomics and misogyny as well. I find the latter especially intriguing, since it’s mostly subtext while the hippies and yuppies thing is a bit more overt. I also appreciate its place in the timeline of slasher winking at the audience, become more satirical, and playing the tropes more on the nose, like the later Sleepaway Camp and Elm Street movies most prominently did once Freddy and Angela started cracking jokes while they were in the middle of slashing throats.
Leatherface: TCM3 is an interesting creature though. I really wish the uncut version survived so I could jude it in its full intended context, but sadly that seems like an impossibility at this point. As it is, I think it’s a pretty good movie. It’s certainly darker than the previous installment. But I respect that fact that it really tried to “go there” and be as brutal as possible. I’m just sad we didn’t get the finished product the director wanted us to see. I also love the weird subplot where it’s suggested that the tall, dark, handsome savior-turned-villain played by Viggo Mortensen might be gay. That’s another really fascinating nugget of subtext hidden in a random TCM sequel that I wish was explored a little bit more. TCM (2003) came out when I was a kid. I remember buying the VHS at a yard sale because I was already into scary movies and thought the cover looked cool and the name sounded familiar. I completely bought into the whole “based on a true story,” “real footage from the scene of the crimes” stuff. When the narrator says the final line of the film “the case today remains open,” I almost sh!t myself. I think the sound design is beyond superb, the cinematography is eerily bleak and desolate. The entire atmosphere feels isolated and claustrophobic despite being wide open. It’s also got one of the greatest jump scares of all time. I really liked it a lot. As for The Beginning, I haven’t seen it in a while. It came out when I was young too. I remember at that point I had already familiarized myself with the rest of the franchise and was excited seeing the TV spots and stuff. When it finally came out, I rented it and was pretty disappointed. It was dark and grim, almost mean-spirited. And the origin story felt like too much of a retread of the remake. But seeing it again with more mature eyes, I really like it for what it is. Most of the movies in the TCM franchise are basically reboots, so that didn’t bother me as much. And looking back, this film was a product of its time 100%. Viewing it with that historic lens made the brutality easier to swallow for me. It’s almost like pseudo-torture porn, which makes complete sense considering it came out around the same time as films like Hostel and Saw were taking off. Culturally, post-9/11 angst was being express on the big screen and this prequel was absolutely one of the movies that did that. Even though there’s very little continuity tying the various installments of this franchise together, I actually think it's one of the better slasher movie series out there overall. All of the movies have something to say beyond just showing people getting slaughtered. You can't say that about every horror franchise. |

That really wasn't what Henkel was going for though. It was more of a higher up secret society/ part of government that was instilling fear on to society. Either way vary similar. But, however Henkel's next film the Butcher Boys did tap on to that scenario for that film. ![]() |

It has a very Cabin in the Woods vibe to me, thought that film is much more overt with it's message. Last edited by redrunner97; 06-05-2018 at 04:38 AM. |

Agreed, I know a lot of people hated that bit in TCM:TNG, but I loved it. Adds a lot of weirdness to it and some people either get it or don't get it. |

Speaking of underrated sequels...
I noticed everyone is raving about how great When a Stranger Calls Back is ever since it hit Amazon Prime recently. I'd love to see Scream Factory pick up this one from Universal (I believe?), especially if they're planning on grabbing the first one from Sony. It's by far the best of the trilogy, and the only one not available on blu-ray anywhere in the world. Help us Scream Factory, you're our only hope. ![]() ![]() |

I never liked TCM 4 as a young one...however when I started working (slaving away) TCM 4 really stood out to me. When you've worked for a soulless money grabbing corporation, you see the elite in their roles of power...it clicked with me and made complete sense.
They were the type that would order meat and feed of them, Much like their workers. @hawkangel knows what I'm talking about, but I should assume positive intent ![]() Last edited by jmat91; 06-05-2018 at 10:24 AM. Reason: typo |
