The hold up is around music rights. From what I've heard several times, the band who did much of the music for the film (Fastway) is demanding a lot of money for clearances, and no one has been willing to pay up.

Me too. I remember seeing the cover art everywhere and then... nothing. I haven't even been able to find a good bootleg, and YouTube is pretty painful. I know I'm not in any way entitled to media access, but it's sad to think of how much we're going to lose over time due to degradation and (now more than ever) data corruption/mismanagement.

I always prefer they do whatever they can when a music issue arises like that. Couldn't they have just muted the entire soundtrack during that one scene and have a text crawl explaining why they had to do so? Even blame the record label or artist - haha! Surely, getting the entire series with one scene muted is better than getting nothing forever. Use subtitles for any dialog that also got muted. And if it were an actual song being performed on-screen by an actor, just blur out the person's lips singing so the record label can't even claim infringement on that. Or simply cut the scene out entirely, but I'd prefer a muted scene so at least it's as uncut as possible. Shout cleared tons of music for their Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman complete tv series, and there are literally hundreds of episodes and tons of music, but they couldn't clear a couple of Johnny Cash songs (probably performed by Mary Kay Place) and maybe another artist, so they just chopped those sequences out completely. Probably not crucial to the plot as it was most likely her just singing them, and those cut episodes run app. 5 minutes short now, but it still proves there are ways around these greedy record labels. I'd rather have had them leave those episodes intact, mute it, blur her lips, and indicate by subtitles that record labels would not work in clearing the songs, but they decided to just chop the scenes out instead. But then there are cases where substitution, muting, or cutting just won't work. To think we'll never get stuff like LOOKING FOR MR. GOODBAR or LITTLE DARLINGS is frustrating, especially when in cases like those, the original songs are crucial. But those are with Paramount anyway, so we'd probably never get them simply because of that. |

Yeah, I remember they said Werewolf's audio was mixed in a way where everything was part of the same track. The music was mixed in with sound effects and dialog, so there was literally no way to remove any music without also removing those other elements.

Still, then just mute the sequence entirely and add subtitles for any dialog, maybe even loop in the dialog from someone else and add foley effects to recreate the effects. Put a disclaimer at the start of the episode indicating this one sequence is that way because of music rights issues. Done. |

At sdcc or on the podcast has anyone asked about Elm Street? They usually give a no chance or ignore it... which usually means there might be a chance!

I swear it must be the running joke at the SF office to deny everything even if they are about to release the movie next week.. |

Exactly. It's a sure fire thing that if Shout Factory can get the series that they are going to release it. It's really irrelevant at this point what what they say until the announcement is finally made. They've done very well with their communications in that they are so consistent in their denial responses that it's impossible to ever really know what's an honest answer and what's not. Given the latest news that they are focusing less on obscure releases and more so on bigger titles/double dips it's only a matter of time until they put out a set or collectors editions.

Okay, someone mentioned Shout handling TV Series recently, so I have a request/question. Remember back in the 00's Lionsgate released tons of "The Best Of _________ From Saturday Night Live"? Best sketches from cast members and even hosts, but around the birth of Blu, they just ended & disappeared. I own many of them on DVD but really would like them upconverted and updated on Blu.
Anybody know why they disappeared? Would Shout be good for this? |

So with the Scream/Hammer deal being directly from Hammer, what may be in the pipeline (for those that know about this stuff)?
I'm assuming FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN and LEGEND OF THE 7 GOLDEN VAMPIRES. What else is direct from Hammer? |

Example: How long did people ask for Psycho 4: The Beginning? And that happened. Big fish, little fish yes, but I think Nightmare on Elm Street is a strong possibility. We've been asking for it the moment we found out Shout had a deal with Warner. And the boxset came out years ago so why not milk more money out of that? Same with Child's Play 2 & 3. Give it a couple of months on Universal's release and Scream will announce it a year or so later. Those movies are ripe for collector's editions. Plus the DVD's and blu-ray are bare bones for 2&3. The benefit of a new NOES boxset is releasing the uncut versions of the films, restoring the original soundtracks, and new transfers. Last edited by ambient_indie; 07-30-2018 at 06:41 AM. |
