Double-posting once again from the dedicated thread, since, once again, the force is strong with this release...

After the death of her father, Leah, a teenager played by Nicole Muñoz, has embraced a gothic metal lifestyle, and, with her circle of like-minded high school friends, enjoys a preoccupation with Satan worship, black magic, and the occult. Meanwhile, Leah's mother, played by Laurie Holden, has turned to alcohol in an attempt to escape her grief, her increasingly detached relationship with her daughter, and her resentment of the family home, which is a constant reminder of her late husband. When Leah is informed by her mother that they will be moving to a rural house for a fresh start on life, she is mortified at the thought of changing schools and having to leave those close to her. After the two of them face each other in a fiercely venomous argument, Leah walks into the woods and performs an occult ritual, summoning a demon called Pyewacket to kill her mother. During the days that follow, the guilt-stricken teen reconciles with her mother and hopes for brighter days ahead, but a new darkness begins to seep into her life.

The 2017 film, Pyewacket, is the sophomore directorial effort from Adam MacDonald, who helmed the impressive survival horror outing, Backcountry, in 2014, and, like that earlier release, it draws its strengths from the psychological explorations of strong characters struggling through problematic relationships. This new movie, however, is leaner, more focused, and significantly more insidious. Although I am a jaded fan of horror cinema, I was on the edge of my seat while watching this story unfold earlier today, and I was filled with dread in anticipation of the inevitable tragedies that manifest themselves in unexpected ways. This is a tremendous movie that quickly enthralled me, and ultimately left me in awe.

I became a fan of Laurie Holden when I saw her for the first time as the recurring character, Marita Covarrubias, in The X-Files television series, and I have since enjoyed her appearances in Silent Hill, The Mist, and The Walking Dead. Muñoz, who has worked for years as a child actor, matches Holden every step of the way, though. I could have watched their dialogue scenes for hours.

Like other titles released by IFC Midnight, namely Backcountry, Desolation, Ghost Stories, Killing Ground, The Survivalist, The Pack, and The Babadook, this movie sports a contemporary digital film look that gives all of its actors an uncannily youthful sheen, regardless of their ages. The immediacy of the photography, however, only serves to accentuate the tangible humanity, good and bad, of the characters as they exhibit real-world flaws and attributes while dealing with external threats that may or may not be products of the imagination.

To all the kids out there, don't perform black magic spells on your parents.

Fans of Scream Factory/IFC discs know the drill. This Blu-ray presentation is gorgeous in terms of video and audio, but don't go looking for a mountain of supplementary extras. We're pretty lucky to get a solid “making of” documentary, at least.

I noticed at Target.com that they’re playing the “see price in cart” game with several of the newer SF releases.

My copy of Someone’s Watching Me came in a regular Elite case. I guess Shout/Scream is back to using those. They had been using the single disc cases that can stack 2 discs. My only issue with that was they they designed the cover art for the elite cases and because of the wider spine no matter how you position the cover,, a portion of either the front or back art would be shown on the spine.

My copies of Alien Predators and Doctor Blood’s Coffin came in the non elite cases and I happens to notice that when I watched them today.

Double-posting from the dedicated thread. This is not one of the better Scream Factory titles in my collection, but there’s still some fun to be had.

Virginia and Brad Marshall, played respectively by Brooke Adams and Jeff Hayenga, have been trying for years to have a baby, only to be repeatedly told that Virginia is medically unable to be a mother. Their quest takes a fortuitous turn when they heed a friend's recommendation to visit Dr. Richard Meyerling, played by James Karen, who runs an innovative in-vitro fertilization program. During her ensuing pregnancy, however, Virginia learns the horrifying truth behind the doctor's experiments.

The 1991 Roger Corman production, The Unborn, quickly casts aside any aspirations of cerebral horror storytelling in the vein of Rosemary's Baby, and veers into the killer baby territory explored in films like It's Alive. Rodman Flender, who would later direct Idle Hands (1999), does manage to birth a few suspenseful story elements, mainly with regard to the lead heroine's discoveries of the fates of other women who underwent the same medical procedure, but the true entertainment value of this film is found in watching fun character actors ham it up to the extreme.

James Karen, whom you all know from Poltergeist (1982) and The Return of the Living Dead (1985), excels as the sinister doctor who uses his medical facility as a front for DNA research. Brooke Adams, whom I have always loved in movies like Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) and Days of Heaven (1978), blesses this film with a good combination of early restraint and subsequent raving insanity.

Lisa Kudrow appears in a pre-Friends role as a brunette medical receptionist, while comedic actress Kathy Griffin is featured as a wonderfully over-the-top feminine birthing coach.

The “so godawfully early-1990s that it should have a warning label on it” aesthetic of this film is quelled somewhat by a cool music score from electro-synth pioneer Gary Numan.

Scream Factory's Blu-ray emerges from the womb with a solidly good high definition transfer and an engaging commentary track from Rodman Flender and Adam Simon.

Nice review! i enjoyed it always since i saw it on video when i was 10 when it first came out and nice transfer too and fine commentary.

It not only reminds me of Rosemary's Baby/It's Alive but also like The Island of Dr Moreau, The Brood, The Fly and the Tyger Tyger episode of Batman the animated series (only minus sexy catgirls, LOL) (remember that episode?).

One of the better Corman productions no doubt and does Karen's mad scientist remind anyone of Moreau and Dr Emile Dorian from Batman TAS?

Looks like the product listing for "Creepshow" is finally up on Amazon Canada.

Though it's not quite available for purchase yet, it looks like we're nearly there, Canadian folks.
