Amazon may be selling the product for the same price as their direct website, however, with Amazon they are only seeing a percentage of the price the customer paid. A direct sale is that much more profit, and they try to incentivize the customer by offering them an earlier release date and various swag. .
If any of this was true than why not sell the product at all the other retailers for an inflated MSRP and sell cheaper directly on their own website all of the time... not just during the pre-order window? Outside of the occasional Arrow sales literally no one sells for cheaper on their own website which means that the thought that somehow direct sales equals more profit cannot be that straightforward.

If Amazon is selling a product for $20 but is taking 25% (hypothetically) of the sale price, why wouldn't shout Factory price the product for $17 or $18 (+shipping) with no middleman? They'd still be making $2 - $3 more per unit than they would from Amazon and likely would encourage significant sales growth as a result. In the real world Amazon prices the product at $20 after price matching another retailer and then takes their 25% (hypothetical) cut. Scream Factory meanwhile says... we'd like you to order from us, so here's a $25 price plus you get to pay shipping, and then can't figure out why people won't buy direct.

Their "sales" are so insulting as well, 10% off of their already marked up prices is a scam. Especially when you have more niche companies like Severin and Vinegar Syndrome that do 50% off sales sometimes in the summer and during Black Friday.

Seems to me like they're paying more for posters and action figures to encourage fans to buy directly from Shout and not many people are biting so now they're forcing the issue.

Unpopular opinion. But why not just make slipcovers exclusive to their website? Could possibly be a solution. I guess...

Between 1988-1995 was a big dying breath of the slasher genre with studios trying and failing to keep it going, we got the death of Freddy & Jason. They attempted to create new horror icons with Dr. Giggles & Candyman. Some of these films made money in theaters, but most only became popular on video! a bunch of direct to video slashers came out during that time. It wasn't until Scream came out in December of 1996 that Horror became popular again and studios began making slashers again creating new Horror Icons Ghostface, Fisherman and Urban Legend, we also got the return of Chucky, Alien, Freddy and Jason. This lasted from 1997-2003.
By the 2000s the Horror genre changed again it was about remakes, Asian Horror, Zombies & Torture Porn. By the 2010s it's become Horror on a budget focusing on Ghost, Haunted Houses and Possesions.

I'm not saying that the early 90s didn't have great Horror films, because it did! it was just a different time with the death of the old Slasher sub genre. Thrillers were huge in the 90s and we got some of the best films from Horror directors during this time, but it was a mix bag of what was working, so Studios weren't making as many Horror related stuff until they knew what worked!
I actually like Urban Legend as it felt like an 80s slasher film even with it's concept around urban legends and a nice cast of horror icons like Douriff and Englund and saw that in theaters as a teen, i can't wait for the new 2-disc BD to upgrade my old DVD.

Scream was successful for Craven even to make horror mainstream despite copycats like I Know what you Did Last Summer to Bloody Camp came. At least I know what you did last summer was trying to make a new icon and it's nice to see studios try to make new icons like Creeper, Captain Splauding, Jigsaw etc.

Bride of Chucky to me was the beginning of the end of the franchise as i thought it was mediocre then followed by 3 rotten sequels no thanks to Don dumbass writer/director Mancni as he killed the franchise and i think the series ended after 3.

Freddy's Dead i liked for being the end of the franchise as New Nightmare and Freddy vs Jason were spin-offs and i liked New Nightmare and at times i liked Freddy vs Jason as i had waited since 1987 for this movie to happen and liked some of the practical gore effects and the fights even seeing Englund having a blast playing Freddy again. Then we got that lousy Elm Street remake especially with the frogface version played by Jackie Earl Haley, i'm sorry you just can't do it, Robert Englund IS and WAS forever Freddy and time to let the franchise just die a peaceful death to move on to make new horror icons. Same for Chucky, Michael, Ghostface, Pinhead, Jigsaw and leatherface as it's time to stop kicking their dead horse of corpses on film and let them rest in peace to live on through comics, merchandise, appereal, costumes and books in those medias instead of on film which will hurt their legacy and turn them into jokes. I did like Friday The 13th remake but no sequel has come to fruitation and they keep overcomplicating things.

I mean time to move on and make fresh new horror icons like Wolfcop, Annabelle, The Nun, Tucker and Dale etc. as it's not too hard to try again you know.

I miss the days we kept talking about the same movies over and over again that we hope Shout releases. Much more hopeful and inspiring than what's happening now.

By December I'm confident those days will return. This has been quite the significant change in distribution/marketing and it's effect will continue to be felt throughout the rest of the fall. It came right on the heels of our excitement regarding the Corman/Sony/Warner deals and right during Comic Con where we were all filled with hope and excitement. Had this change occurred in January the response would have been similar but no where near as prolonged or dramatic I believe. The complete utter lack of any sort of communication and the revelations that not only would other retailers not be allowed pre-orders but that they would also not be receiving product until much later than Amazon and Shout Factory themselves only caused the issue to become that much larger.

As it stands we were essentially all at our most excited optimistic state when the news started to break that the hottest time of year for titles that we all look forward to was going to look different which resulted in such a dramatic downer that it's resonated for months now.

Once we get through the Fall slate of titles and everything is available at all retailers however criticism will likely start to dwindle. One of the things I am most interested in right now is what future Scream Factory Sales look like. If they're going to really try to stick it to retailers and encourage direct sales, then they're going to need to step up their sales promotions. My hope is that they will take a page from Arrow and offer 50-60% off sales more frequently. They themselves noted how successful last years Anniversary sale was, so perhaps this restructuring is to better help support that kind of sale marketplace. As others have mentioned it would bring them that much closer to Criterion in terms of how they sell their product long term.

I wasn't aware about the product lockout post-street date. The temporary Amazon exclusivity and subsequent price inflation is bad enough but this is outright ludicrous. Is this for real or is it just something people are fearing will happen? BTW, I don't know if it's related to the new strategy or if it's something else but Amazon is showing The Evil as Currently Unavailable. Usually there's a preorder by now, isn't there?

On the second note, I think Shout will take a page from Criterion and offer a "discount" on select titles based off of the MSRP. So, Candyman will be "on sale" for $24.99 and people will believe they're getting a bargain. Jeez.

So I got an email about a back to school sale from Shout that features BOGO on select titles.
Halloween 2 collectors edition
Halloween 3 collectors edition
My Little Pony Equestrian Girls Rainbow Rocks
T.A.M.I show / The Big T.N.T show
Teen Wolf Too Collectors Edition
I noticed something though. When my cart only had Teen Wolf Too in it and I changed the quantity to 2 it said my total was $0???? My card charges me if I go in the negative so I can’t risk it but will someone please try it and see if it works for you to place the order! Also if it does if some kind soul wants to send me the second free copy for finding the deal I’d appreciate that. Thanks everyone.

The same thing showed for me, but there's no way I'm taking the risk of getting charged $30 for teen wolf too.

Thanks. I took the gamble. When you change the quantity to 2 in the cart it updates the total to $0 but then it changes the quantity back to 1. I'm in Canada, so I had to pay $10 for shipping but still worth it imo. I paid with paypal so they can't charge me more. The only thing they can do is cancel the order.

Bottom line is either support them or not, plain & simple. It’s the same bickering everyday now. Luckily I preordered all the titles announced at comic-con already & paid in full. I have 10 titles to wait on. Is that so wrong?
