Shout is cheap for us compared to Vestron, Arrow, Criterion and anything else half interesting. Even some of those recent Universal releases are ridiculous (The Skulls at $27 for example).

In regards to the pre-order 'lockout' to smaller businesses... I don't know what the reason for their decision is, but I also can't really blame them. This company wants to be in control of their product and the fact that places like DiabolikDVD (who I love) are guaranteed to get stuff in our hands prior to release date... well, certainly doesn't fare well for them. Shout/Scream Factory often offer the incentive to receive stuff early if we pre-order through them directly, and that incentive flits out the window when you can get it from another distributor early anyway.
This very well may just be a case of Shout/Scream realizing that they've lost control of their own product line and incentives and are taking back said control. If these smaller online shops didn't break street date on a regular basis, maybe it'd be a different story? |

With Best Buy when I pre order things I usually get them the day before the official release date, 1 time I got a movie on Saturday. Sure its only a day or two but its still before release date. When I would order SF titles from Diabolik id get them 1 day before release as well.

This film got a DVD release. Not sure if it "badly" needs an upgrade. In any case, it'll probably never get one if the DVD sold poorly.

I never hear anyone say they pre-ordered directly from SF because they will receive it 2 weeks early. The main reason people order directly from them is because they want the poster or whatever other limited exclusive they are offering. The 2 weeks early release is a bonus. |

I'm going to plow through all of three of these movies this weekend. I've seen this first film many times, but the second and third film will be new to me.
![]() Eight years after surviving a tragic accident, Angela is sent to summer camp with her cousin, Ricky, by her peculiar aunt. Ricky, who has attended the camp during previous summers, is fiercely protective of the shy and withdrawn Angela, who, almost immediately upon arrival, is bullied and harassed by her female bunkmates and by the adolescent guys in the neighboring cabins. Angela gradually comes out of her shell as she is befriended and romanced by one affable boy, but her stay at the camp takes a sharp turn for the worse when other teens meet their deaths in gruesomely unexpected ways. The 1983 slasher film, Sleepaway Camp, which was directed by Robert Hiltzik and which gained a cult following during the VHS rental era, raised eyebrows upon its release due to a disturbing and unforgettable plot twist. When viewed today, however, the above-mentioned twist, which I will not reveal, is the least creepy aspect of this movie. Upon revisiting the film today, I was a lot more repulsed by an early dialogue sequence where a camp cook is leering at the newly-arrived girls and by one teenage girl's apparent crush on the pasty 50-something year-old camp director. (To the film's credit, the disgusting camp cook gets his just desserts dished out to him in a bad way.) My advice for new viewers who are coming of age in a world that has thankfully advanced in terms of gender dynamics is simply to roll along with the crudeness and enjoy this haphazard feature for the often-humorous make-believe that it was intended to be all along, because, regardless of who you are, you will probably find a reason to be offended. If nothing else, younger people will be taken aback by some of the godawful outdated clothing fashions. Angela, as played by Felissa Rose, steals the show with her ever-present wide-eyed petrified stare, as though she feels constantly bewildered and besieged by her everyday life. Of course, I have been known to have the same facial expressions whenever I have to sit through a gratingly somnambulistic Microsoft PowerPoint presentation at a work meeting or when the person running a meeting asks, “Are there any more questions?”, and somebody has a question. There's something universally relatable about Angela's plight, and one surprisingly heartwarming scene, where the character speaks out loud for the first time, always compels me to cheer. Two of Angela's tormentors, Judy and Meg, are hilariously despicable whenever they appear on the screen, and it's human nature for us, the viewers, to wish the absolute worst fates upon them (although...cue the shudders...the curling iron moment goes way overboard). Aunt Martha, played wonderfully by Desiree Gould, is so odd and creepy, mostly for reasons that become apparent later in the story, and even her introductory moment clues us in to the notion that nothing is right about her mental state. I've heard from reliable sources that the actress who plays a water skier during the opening scene narrowly missed a Best Actress nomination. The Academy had reportedly considered her for a long while, but her performance was ultimately overlooked due to strong competition from other acclaimed competitors that year. “Get them into the boat, please! Oh my God, we just hit them both! Oh my God! Somebody help them. Please!” The actor who plays a mustached police officer who shows up later in the film with a fake mustache was also reportedly up for Academy consideration. Although his performance remains sadly unacknowledged by an award, one cannot deny that he had spirit. Jonathan Tiersten, who plays Ricky, deserved an Academy Award for Best Achievement in Constant Profanity. Here's a Public Service Announcement for all viewers. If someone drops a beehive into a bathroom stall while you are inside the stall, then you have approximately 1.3 seconds to escape before your whole body swells and rots away. A film like Sleepaway Camp would not fly in today's world, but it remains a gleefully entertaining slice of slasher escapism. The superb Scream Factory Blu-ray edition of this film contains a lengthy documentary hosted by the cast and crew, all of whom are genuinely fond of their experiences on the set and immensely grateful for the fact that the movie is remembered by fans after all of these years. |
