The shirt just has an idyllic image of trees and a lake, with no overt references to Jason Voorhees or Friday the 13th, so it’s always fun to see who actually recognizes the name. |

![]() ![]() Five years after enduring a series of tragic murders at Camp Arawak and undergoing extensive medical and psychological therapy in the meantime, Angela enjoys a rewarding job as a head counselor at the nearby Camp Rolling Hills and maintains an eternally cheerful demeanor as she steers teenagers on the right moral path away from sex, drugs, and sin. Even when she discovers occasional campers engaging in mischievous behavior and “sends them home”, she does not lose her contagiously optimistic smile. When Angela's methods come under question from the other counselors, however, her sunny days may soon be coming to an end. The 1988 horror sequel, Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers, jettisons the bleak edge and the psychosexual ick factor of its 1983 predecessor in favor of a gloriously over-the-top tone that pushes an otherwise conventional slasher tale into the realm of dark comedy. This time around, Pamela Springsteen, the younger sister of Bruce Springsteen, takes over the role of Angela to great result, giving the character an endearingly wisecracking personality and an uncanny innocence that lends a truly demented joy to her gory kill scenes. Renée Estevez, who is best known for playing Winona Ryder's nerd friend, Betty Finn, in the 1988 film, Heathers, shines as the good girl who gradually understands the extent of Angela's strict oversight as all of her fellow campers are “sent home.” Walter Gotell, who starred in several Roger Moore James Bond 007 films as the head of the KGB, and, as such, was generally recognized as the cinematic face of the Soviet Union during the 1980s, is a real trip here as the outgoing camp director, Uncle John. Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers further distinguishes itself from the aesthetic of the original by way of several scenes of female nudity, almost to the point of becoming a softcore porn movie. It also proudly wears its slasher influences on its sleeve in an overt way by featuring characters dressed in Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, and Leatherface costumes during one pivotal sequence. This sequel was filmed in Waco, Georgia, not far from where I grew up, so the familiarity of the wooded settings adds considerably to my own enjoyment. Along with Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, which was shot near Covington, this film is an immense source of pride for horror fans in the state. The original Sleepaway Camp is the better horror movie, but, in many ways, I find this first sequel to be more fun. If you're looking for an off-the-wall selection to show during a Halloween party, then this one is perfect for that sort of vibe. The hair metal soundtrack is icing on the cake. “Speak of the devil! Look who's on TV!” This Scream Factory Blu-ray delivers the goods with a transfer that, while not quite demo disc material, is likely the best look that we can expect from the film. The extras are a blast, especially the commentary track and the film location feature. |

![]() ![]() Angela is back! A year after the tragic killings at Camp Rolling Hills, a husband and wife open Camp New Horizons at the same location with the benevolent intent of bringing different social classes of teenagers together so that they can develop bonds outside of the peer pressure confines of their normal environments. Unbeknownst to them, however, one of their young campers is actually Angela in disguise. Angela still has zero tolerance for obnoxious sex, drugs, or partying, she still wants to be a happy camper, and she still has a creative knack for ushering unsuspecting victims to fitting ends. The teenagers are split up into three groups that are each sent out into the forest to camp out for a few days, but Angela wastes no time bringing them all back together in death. The 1989 slasher cult favorite, Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland, was shot back-to-back with its predecessor, Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers, by director Michael A. Simpson at the same rural location in Waco, Georgia, and, like the second movie, it casts aside the bleakness and psychosexual ickiness of the original 1983 classic in favor of wisecracking humor, rampant female nudity, and laughably over-the-top kill scenes. Pamela Springsteen, the younger sister of Bruce Springsteen, reprises her role as Angela from the second film, albeit with a new hairstyle that suits her even better, and, as before, her oddly magnetic charm is the invaluable ingredient that makes this an infinitely rewatchable endeavor. Michael J. Pollard (Tango & Cash, Bonnie and Clyde) is wonderfully sleazy as the dirty old man camp director, while Tracy Griffith, the half-sister of actress Melanie Griffith, is supremely likable as a redhead camper who falls into an unlikely romance with a gang kid played by Mark Oliver (We Are Marshall). Atlanta-born actress Kim Wall is perfect as a privileged racist cheerleader who is brought down to Earth from her high place when Angela introduces her to a flagpole. The first three Sleepaway Camp movies are all hilarious in their own uniquely sick ways, and, although this third film is my least favorite by a slim margin, it nonetheless delivers in spades when it comes to nonstop entertainment. Watch the first movie for its psychological edge that broke new ground in the slasher genre, and then watch the second and third film, both of which have a distinctly different tone than the first, simply for their outrageously fun aesthetics. “Angels are pretty, angels can fly, and here is the angel that'll make you die! You got no style and you got no cares; all ya do is fight and swear. So say your prayers and make amends, cause ya life story is about to end.” As with the Scream Factory releases of the first two films, this third disc benefits from a solid good audio and video presentation, topped off by an excellently engaging round of special features. |

I totally agree with The Great Owl on the Sleepaway camp movies. I shared a similar (far less detailed) sentiment earlier. Great reviews as always, thanks Owl!

I recently watched Pollard in Sunday in the Country, a 1974 drive-in movie that is available by way of a region free UK Blu-ray. That’s a good little flick that has Shout Factory written all over it if they ever decide to release it domestically.

If you're really concerned with cluttering up the boards, then maybe take the insults somewhere else? There's no need to make fun of anybody here, let alone gang up on somebody. Obviously if someone is in violation of the rules, then report them. But if not, then it seems like you could just be cool. Or at the very least save it for the Code Red thread. ;^)
