A clue from Cliff regarding on the Phantasm II CE via Facebook:

"My favorite Phantasm moment was talking to Don Coscarelli on the phone last Friday... and that's all I'm saying..."

I think we know where this is going.

Will Halloween 2 and Phantasm 2 have subtitles? I'm hard-of-hearing and lack of subs has always been a bane of home video for me.

Cliff, how about a Blu-ray release of The Car (1977)? It's owned by Universal so I would think it's a possibility. The 2.35:1 anamorphic transfer on the DVD they put out a few years ago looks really good so I imagine a BD release would look outstanding. Some special features would be nice too.

With such great trackrecord I wonder what happened with the video in this great movie? Was there problem with the asian owner since the Universal disc looks good?

Actually, parts 2 (Unhappy Campers) and 3 (Teenage Wasteland) are the only ones I'm interested in. MGM supposedly has them now. If they ever do get released on BD, it would be great if they could track down Pam Springsteen for commentaries and interviews.

So....really stupid question...

I've never seen Phantasm. Is it necessary to watch it before watching Phantasm II?

With studios having different rights to different movies in a series it gets really frustrating catching up on a series of movies for the first time on Blu-Ray.

yeah i mean its a pretty direct sequel but i think theres some sort of recap at the beginning so i dont know if its 100% necessary. id certainly recommend seeing the original first.

The first one's pretty much the only one that makes sense, in a funky 70's-drive-in horror vibe.

The sequels either restate the premise, or go way off onto overdeveloping its own mythos to get even more confusing.
(Most of the critics passed off the first movie since it was playing the B-theaters anyway, but when the sequel played big-studio theaters, shrugged, "...The HECK?? " And while II briefly explains a recap at the beginning, it doesn't really help for first-timers.

...I think it would benefit you to see Phantasm 1 first because the characters and tone are set-up in the original. With the Phantasm movies there is a bit of continuity so it's nice to watch them in order. If it's a barrier for you to watch Phantasm 1 is standard definition then you might be able to get away it jumping to number 2 but I would discourage it.

Hmmm... if you read the thread you will find post #33 here answers your question...

Regarding English subtitles:

I'm really looking forward to these releases, Cliff.

I have most of the Shout Factory Corman BDs and the quality of the transfers and the overall packages are excellent. Companies prepared to add something special to their releases are a dying breed, so kudos to you for that.

The only complaint I've heard in regards to the Shout Factory BDs is the fact that they're region locked. I'm guessing that this is no fault of your own, and most probably due to the licensing deal, but will you be able to target a wider market with these Scream Factory releases, or will they all be region locked also?

Irrelevant of that, I'm very much looking forward to seeing what else Scream Factory has in store for the future; the criminally under-rated Prince of Darkness would be a great addition on the back of They Live, plus if you ever manage to get the rights to release Andrzej Zulawski's Possession on BD, I'll be first in the pre-order queue!

I 100% Agree with this and couldnt have said it better myself - The Car would be a perfect Scream Factory *ride*

Since Universal holds the US rights, Army of Darkness would fit and could use an upgrade, especially if a hi-def director's cut could be included.

I would love scream factory to release Bubba Ho Tep on blu if that's even possible.

Army of Darkness director's cut (same cut as the MGM R3 release) would be an instant buy for me too!

Yeah, I'm one of those people who feels he has to watch everything in hi-def now.

I'd really like to pick up Phantasm II when it comes out on Blu-Ray though, so I guess I'll try renting the first one before I watch the blu-ray of part 2.

Dustin over at the Phantasm Community forums states that Red Shirt is working on all new extras for Phantasm II including (and I quote) "something that ought to far outshine P2's segment in Phantasmagoria." (unquote)

That's interesting. Ideally I'd always wanted a port of that UK DVD set because the extras were all so good, and of course all the films being together.
