These are $30 each on Amazon.
Thanks for the heads up, just ordered a few movies myself.

The Thing Steelbook could very well drop in price on amazon.ca.

If you have a Sunrise Records near you, you can also check them out they carry Scream Factory.
Thanks! I'll hold up for The thing, in hope it eventully goes down in proce!

That's an interesting take. I like Scream more than I know what you did last summer. Do you prefer I Know what you did last summer since it plays everything straight, the setting or actors?

Just kind of curious. I liked I know what you did last summer more than I thought I would, but Scream is the superior movie in my eyes.

Agreed, and also curious as to their reasoning.

I think SCREAM does some brilliant things by taking the meta approach to horror movies, and slasher tropes specifically, while also having a few moments that are genuinely unsettling.

It's been several years, but the last time I saw I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, it felt more like a straight forward attempt at a typical teen slasher, that overused certain tropes with out any sort of awareness or commentary on it (like the one character running through an alley way, and stopping like...7 feet from the street/parade so she could look back and wait for the killer to catch up to her).

Granted, maybe I just missed some layer back then that I'd appreciate now? But, my current view of it is not a good one.

Who owns I Know What You Did? Sony? I wouldn't mind seeing the trilogy come out in a nice package...

I prefer horror movies that do not wink at the audience. The whole meta-horror thing does not really work for me (although there are a few exceptions).

I Know What You Did Last Summer is similar in tone to the golden age slashers of the early 1980s, except without the gore, the boobs, or the joy. Its straightforward aesthetic works for me, though.

In all fairness, the first Scream is pretty good. Like someone else said, it does have some violent moments that are genuinely unnerving. In terms of tone, though, there's something off about the whole thing.

I just ordered Valley Girl & Blue Dahlia for around $19.25 each ppd. I hope that was Good price?

Shout/Scream helped kick start me into collecting in 2017 (They Live, Escape NY steelbooks etc.) but I think the two films above might be my first Shouts this year for 2018.

I do enjoy Scream but I don’t think it holds up very well. The dialogue is very dated at times, there are some things that don’t make sense (like why the killers are trying to kill Sydney the whole movie despite her basically being essential to their endgame), and some other stuff.

Wes Craven’s New Nightmare I think is far more interesting as far as meta horror directed by Craven goes. But I do remember when Scream came out and it did serve as a nice eulogy so to speak, to the slasher craze.

I found the Thing steelbook at Sunrise for $29.99 and used a $5 coupon to bring it down to $24.99.

I hope when the next wave of titles are announced in January that the Brain is one of them. Need this one.

Scream has gotten too much credit over the years for being "brilliant" simply for being meta. It's a fun, fine film, but meta-horror had been around long before it.

Hell, There's Nothing Out There had a "Randy" half a decade before Scream got there.

Except THERE'S NOTHING OUT THERE was much more of a comedic b-movie embracing/parodying other b monster movies, with a single character as the expert who sort of realizes that he is in a crappy monster movie.

While there is the one "expert" in SCREAM's Randy, most of the characters are still well aware, or at least familiar with slasher movie tropes. And the movie uses that to shift between some of them acting stupid despite that knowledge (or just as stupidly, embracing certain situations because they think it's TOO tropey to actually be a dangerous situation), and others meeting their end after thinking they've dodged the cliches. Some tropes are spotlighted, other tropes are thrown out/unused entirely despite being discussed.

THERE'S NOTHING OUT THERE was fun as a parody/homage to b-movies. But, while it is built on a horror frame, it really doesn't work as anything other than a comedy.

While I'd hardly call SCREAM an amazing slasher movie without all of the commentary on the slasher (specifically teen slasher) sub-genre, it still works as a decent horror movie.

Of course there were plenty of other "meta" movies before it. I've yet to see a single review or essay on SCREAM (the first, or the franchise itself) that says it's brilliant simply because it's meta, but because of the way in which it used that aspect to both sort of tear down the genre it belong to, while as reinvigorating it (if unintentionally, and only to have that genre re-run itself into the ground).

Movies are a subjective medium, so of course it all comes down to opinion. But, I'd wager there at least some good reason that critics, writers, and genre filmmakers seem to have shown a greater appreciation for SCREAM over time.

Scream came out at a time when the horror genre was considered dead, site it wasn’t original & never claimed to be, but it still was a fresh take on horror. It was funny & scary & very violent without being too gory. It came out right after Wes Craven did New Nightmare which Scream could very much owe its birth rite to. Wes Craven also knew what he was doing while respecting his own genre just enough to where it didn’t into a spoof. I appreciated the second Scream even more & to me had an even better twist than the first. The third I have a soft spot for but that’s where it started to get a bit into spoofing itself. Scream 4 was a surprise as it just seemed like a cash grab & at least kept up with the current events of pop culture. I’d easily welcome a release of this Scream series if possible & purchase the day it’s announced.

I thought Scream 2 was better than the original. I enjoy all the movies in different ways.

I'll never forget leaving the theater after Scream 2 and feeling so completely disappointed. I'd loved the first one but thought the sequel was just terrible. Scream 3 wasn't great but I liked it a little more, and I thought Scream 4 was the worst of them all. The original is the only one I really love and have ever cared to own. It works great by itself and the sequels just kind of got more and more ridiculous. I'd love a remastered version of it but knowing my luck it'd be part of a box set with all four.

that's an unusual opinion for sure but to each his own. I remember seeing SCREAM 2 in the theater as well and liking it a lot though I knew pretty quickly that it wasn't as great as the original (wasn't expecting it to be either).

I enjoy the entire series and would say that the original is great, 2 is very good, and 3 and 4 are merely good.

and yes... these movies desperately need a remaster!

I mentioned this in the Critters thread but I'll say it here too. If you have a Vintage Stock near, a lot of the newer, more expensive (in most places) SF titles can be had for about $22. I'm finally able to start catching up and not be financially raped in the process. Figured I'd mention this in the main thread for those that may not be aware.

There's Nothing Out There is a strong B-movie. Great fun. Wouldn't fit with the SF label, though. It's at home with Vinegar Syndrome.
