I finally picked that up a month ago as I'd given up hope that it would ever be released on Blu.

With a newer title like The Green Inferno, this gives me hope that Universal will license The Guest to Scream Factory!

What's wrong with the current Blu-ray?

These days it seems like every title has at least someone who wants to see it re-released by Shout/Scream.

If anyone's waiting for the Amazon Canada price to drop on Valentine, it's down to $26CAD. I've never seen the movie, but I'll give it a blind buy at that price.

“It gets bad on Friday the 13th
But it gets worse on Saturday the 14th”

When John and Mary, a husband and wife played respectively by Richard Benjamin (Westworld) and Paula Prentiss (The Stepford Wives), inherit a derelict mansion from a deceased uncle, they move in with their teenage daughter, Debbie, played by Kari Michaelsen (Gimme a Break), and their son, Billy, played by Kevin Brando (The Octagon). A series of spooky events and monster attacks ensue when Billy unwittingly opens an old book which contains all of the evil in the world. The mother is puzzled by strange marks on her neck. Debbie is terrorized by the Creature from the Black Lagoon while taking a bath. John is annoyed by the bats in the belfry. Relatives and neighbors disappear in horrible ways. A mysterious man, Van Helsing, played by Severn Darden (Real Genius), shows up in the guise of a pest control exterminator to search for the book. Meanwhile, a vampire couple, played by Jeffrey Tambor (Hill Street Blues) and Nancy Lee Andrews (Scarface), watch over the proceedings with their own agenda in mind.

I have fond memories of watching the 1981 horror comedy, Saturday the 14th, every time that it aired on HBO the following year while I was 10 years old, but today's viewing was my first time revisiting it in over three and a half decades. Many people my age have told me that this film does not hold up well under the scrutiny of an adult perspective, but, since even my childhood self knew that it was a silly movie back then, I found that it has not lost much of its endearingly idiotic charm. In fact, this movie's sheer ineptness with regard to both humor and scares had me chuckling. It's an innocuous family story for the most part, but several characters actually do get killed, so the end result is scatterbrained in a “This could only happen in the 1980s.” sort of way.

Saturday the 14th was produced by Julie Corman, the wife of iconic B movie king, Roger Corman, and, like most other movies released by New World Pictures back then, it proudly wears its budget shortcomings on its sleeve. As far as acting goes, Jeffrey Tambor and Nancy Lee Andrews are the most fun to watch while they ham it up as the vampires. The constant obliviousness of Richard Benjamin's character is also good for a laugh.

Interestingly enough, the scary house is located on Elm Street, although this movie predates A Nightmare on Elm Street by three years.

This Shout Factory Blu-ray features a great-looking transfer that seems to hit all of the right notes in terms of capturing a filmic look from the movie's era of production. An interview with Julie Corman is icing on the cake.

Hah! I literally picked up that Horror set, the TCM Vault set, and the Inner Sanctum set in October on the assumption that they'll never get upgraded.

My Scream Factory wishlist is the shortest it's ever been, with only Superstition, The Manitou and a couple of others on my radar so far. Kino and Scorpion are the ones getting my money this year, while Arrow and Severin are distancing themselves away more each day from the type of films I want. Kino has two of my top-5 grails coming up plus the awesome Lakeshore stuff and Scorpion is taking over the fun 80's B movie reins because of their deal with MGM. First they hinted at The Heavenly Kid and now it looks like they're doing 3:15 - The Moment of Truth! This is the kind of stuff I live for.

I've never seen 3:15 before, I need to rectify that as soon as possible, sounds like it's right up my alley

Sure if Scream got a deal with Lionsgate.

Do you think Scream Factory would actually release these films? I'm not so sure. They clearly passed on Last House on the Left over and over again over again until Arrow picked it up. Both 1000 corpses and Devil's Rejects are gritty films that don't really feel like something Scream Factory would be interested in releasing. I of course may be wrong, but even if a deal with Lionsgate was struck, I just don't see them wanting to release those films.

Very happy. My amazon.ca preorder for valentine dropped to $26 and poison ivy to $42! Good with both these prices.

I'm surprised they didn't release Last House since they released lots of Cravens other films, but maybe they wanted to release other stuff first and then lost their chance and Arrow got it.

If Lionsgate were willing to strike a deal? Without hesitation.

I think the bigger issue with The Last House on the Left was that, while previous MGM release was dirt cheap, the extras were fairly comprehensive and film elements were going to present a major hurdle for a new scan / restoration (See Arrow's liner notes).

Besides, neither of the Rob Zombie films are really all that subversive, IMO; not compared to TLHotL.

Director Gary Sherman just announced that Shout Factory have acquired his '80s hookersploitation classic VICE SQUAD (1982) for release!

"Just heard from Shout Factory that they secured the rights to VICE SQUAD! It's finally coming to Blu-Ray! More as soon as I know."

VICE SQUAD - (1982) Trailer - YouTube
That's a pretty cool trailer. I'm interested in seeing more of Sherman's work, plus I love Season Hubley.
