Got my copy of Man's Best Friend in today. Looking forward to watching it again, haven't seen it many years. I never owned the DVD so the last time I've seen it was on VHS tape.

Oh no! I have the Twisted Terrors DVD set, also. Now, I have to go and check my "The Hand" DVD out, as well. What was the other one you noticed rotted?

Have a feeling "The Hand" will end up on the Archive line. A year ago I would've preferred to see Shout handle it but now I don't care. Same for Deadly Friend. I'm still not crazy about barebones MOD releases but I also don't want to pay $30 for a slipcover and some talking heads.
I'm still puzzled why "He Knows You're Alone", "Alone In the Dark", "Deadly Friend" or "The Hand" weren't among Shout's initial Warner offerings. Those are the titles people expected when they announced the Warner deal. I wonder if Shout had them in the pipeline but something happened and they lost the rights. It's just as well since an Archive release will be cheaper. |

However, WAC just released it on DVD only, so maybe it will be Comic Con announcement from Shout this year! I do wonder how often Craven went on record discussing DF, and if they are able to release a later-in-life interview with him reflecting on it. |

I think Shout would like many Warner titles but given Warner Archive's recent releases it's obvious they wish to hold on to some sci-fi/horror stuff (for whatever reason). And since Deadly Friend would undoubtedly have been near the top of Scream's wants list, I have to think this was one such title. Now this isn't to say the situation may change in future (perhaps if Warner are happy with the initial deal and consent to the licencing of further titles, or if Scream simply throw more money at it). That said, in regard to numerous other Warner titles mentioned, I don't believe the current Warner deal has run its course (the solid speculation on forthcoming Warner Hammer titles suggests as much), so let's wait and see what else is announced in the coming months.
As for the recent Deadly Friend DVD, I wouldn't look into this too much - they re-issued Judgment Night on DVD as part of the WAC in early 2018, only for it to get a Blu a year later. It's quite possible they have Deadly Friend on Blu pencilled in for later in the year. |

Now that I found out I can get WAC in Canada for decent prices on wowhd.ca, I'm liking their titles more and more. They used to be in the same range as Shout ($30), but I just got a couple for about $17-20. Not nearly as good as the 4/44 sales you get in the US, but cheaper than most Shout titles and not a terrible price. I don't like paying more than $20 for most movies these days. I'm being far more selective with my purchases, which means a lot less Shout buys for me.

I decided to give this a revisit tonight out of the clear blue...
![]() When their food supply of steroid-contaminated corn grains is destroyed, thousands of mutated rats terrorize the city of Toronto as they migrate into populated areas through the sewer system and feed on people. These rats are abnormally large, they are able to gnaw their way through metal gates and barriers with their super strength jaws, and they don't give a human's ass who their victims are. City employees, teenagers, elderly people, moviegoers at a local theater, subway passengers, and even babies all become the latest additions to the rodent menu. Paul, a high school teacher played by Sam Groom, commences a romantic relationship with a local health inspector, played by Sara Botsford, only to be drawn into the investigation of the super rats whenever he is not deflecting the flirtatious advances of an infatuated student, played by Lisa Langlois. When the mutant creatures descend on a posh inauguration ceremony for a new subway station and turn the mayor and other city officials into bloody delicacies, Paul must rescue his new love interest and his son from a similarly gruesome demise. The 1982 Canadian horror film, Deadly Eyes (Night Eyes), which was directed by Robert Clouse (Enter the Dragon), is loosely based on the 1974 James Herbert novel, The Rats, which was one of my favorite books during childhood. I will not go so far as to say that this adaptation is a cinematic milestone, but, if you are in the mood for gloriously exploitative B movie mayhem, then you are in the right place. Creative special effects, gratuitous nudity, miraculously straight-faced actors, and the classic when-animals-attack plot fixture of tourist attractions or popular opening ceremonies falling under siege from malicious creatures all come together for a highly entertaining end result. The death of a baby early in the story is a malicious development that sets the stage for no-holds-barred horror, but the rest of the film falls into endearingly schlocky territory. Deadly Eyes is perhaps best known today for a so-ridiculous-that-it-might-actually-work idea employed by the filmmakers during production. During many of the scenes involving the roaming packs of rodents, the giant mutant rats were actually Dachshunds dressed in fearsome Jim Henson-style rat costumes. The illusion is surprisingly effective, except for the sight of the rats “galloping” with bouncy Dachshund movements instead of running in the way that real rats run. When I first saw this movie many years ago, Sam Groom looked vaguely familiar to me, and, when I checked the Internet Movie Database, I realized that he had played the father in an obscure 1980s sci-fi television series, Otherworld, that my brother and I used to watch. My favorite cast presence in this film, however, is courtesy of 1980s scream queen extraordinaire Lisa Langlois, who also starred in Happy Birthday to Me, Class of 1984, The Nest, and Transformations. Scatman Crothers, whom all of you know from The Shining, is outstanding as a city sewer employee. Lesleh Donaldson (Happy Birthday to Me, Funeral Home) and Joseph Kelly (Witness) are memorable additions as two of the ill-fated teenagers. I have always loved the when-animals-attack sub-genre of scary cinema, so Deadly Eyes, with all of its eye-rolling dialogue moments and costumed dogs, hits the sweet spot of my nostalgia from my days as a 1980s kid. The supplementary interviews on this Scream disc are a blast. It's a shame and a sin that the Blu-ray is apparently out of print. |
