It pains me to admit I've still not seen this one; need to remedy that at some point, as director Seth Holt made my absolute favorite of Hammer's run of psychological thrillers with SCREAM OF FEAR.

I'm likewise satisfied with the current Blu of THE LOST BOYS, but I would like a fresh stab at the previously released (and woefully inadequate) Blu of NEAR DARK. I've no idea what rights issues may be in play with this title (if any), but it's the better of these two 1987 vampire cult classics and Bill Paxton's excellent portrayal of Severen is legend.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but if memory serves be correct isn't Near Dark a Studio Canal title? If so then it's entirely likely that someone has it and it's only a matter of time until it's reissued. Lionsgate's ability to release the title expired years ago if I'm not mistaken.

I should say though that we lack insider confirmation that Near Dark is not with StudioCanal in the US. The Kino Insider has curiously avoided the question, this response last month being particularly interesting. As you can see, he confirms that The Hitcher is not with SC in the US, but ignores Near Dark completely.
If Near Dark is somehow with SC in North America, I fully expect it to have ended up with Scream, I'd be stunned if Kino beat them to it (I sense this could only happen if Scream were unaware it was with SC). |

A film being "with the producer" is essentially a death knell, sadly. Other titles thought to be with the producers are Fright Night Part II, Dawn of the Dead, and Fade To Black. It's not always dire, though. At least we got Hell Night

Re: Fright Night Part II, I read that Tom Holland was trying to reclaim the rights so it can come out on home video again, and maybe produce another sequel. I don't know what's up with Fade to Black. Digital copies sourced from VHS are around online, but a spiffed up Blu would be extremely welcome. Last edited by HenryHill; 04-16-2019 at 03:56 PM. |
