Of those, I've seen The Dark Half, and it was a decent film that I'd recommend. As a Stephen King adaptation, it's only average. Like most, it comes up way short in comparison to the book. But so much of the good stuff in King's work seems unfilmable. Like The Dead Zone and a few others, The Dark Half is one of his books that left me with soggy eyeballs when I was done reading it.

I kind of dug After Midnight. It's kind of silly, but it's got that glossy, late 80s sheen to it, which I'm a fan of, and while the stories were nothing particularly special, they were still very enjoyable. If you like that era, I'd recommend it.

I'd recommend Nightmares and Hell Hole, I own all of them and like them all but those both hit the right notes, one for a semi-classic anthology the other for an off kilter sleaze fest. I fall in the camp of not so much caring if a movie is "good", more if it has memorable elements that I enjoy whether or not the film comes together perfectly.

You should never ask "Is it good?" You should always ask "Is it entertaining?"
Also I found Women's Prison Massacre to be far more entertaining than Hellhole. |

I've always loved The Dark Half (book & film), and was a welcome day one purchase to finally own it in widescreen. IMO it belongs in every horror fan's collection.

I do blame Scream. I refuse to buy Scream titles unless they are on sale. Hoping Barnes and Noble does another 40% off sale around Christmas. The Scream titles they marked down the last sale went through the January releases.

So, having finished the epic 3 hour long Shockwaves Podcast with the Scream Factory fellas, there was talk of the Universal Horror sets and how they would now be going chronologically and that there was more to come. They also mentioned that there would be one big and important Universal title that would get a standalone release and would not be included in a 4 film volume. Guesses?
Obviously, Murders In The Rue Morgue was missed in the first set and felt like it belonged there, but the 'chronologically' thing bothers me. I don't know of any title after the ones already released that would merit Collector's Edition treatment. Maybe 'The Climax'? It hasn't been released anywhere yet that I'm aware of and is often requested, tho I don't think it's the greatest. Would be glad to have it, anyway, but I'm thinking the title has to be Murders. Then again I know 'Captive Wild Woman' has its many defenders. Thoughts? |

Yeah, I'm inclined to think the same. I wonder if the available master that Elephant Films released with the extra added music cues has something to do with it having not yet been released by SF?

I revisited Tales From the Darkside: The Movie last night and had a blast so I hope Shout is able to pick it up. The PQ on the DVD was OK but any time I pop one in I kinda cringe a little. I thought the colors were a tad too strong but that could've been the settings on my TV.
I've always enjoyed this movie more than I typically enjoy anthologies. Maybe part of it was the gore but I found all three stories engaging and a lot of fun, especially the last one. Funny, though, the actual TV series this is based on was never as intense as the film turned out to be. 'Darkside' feels more like it could've been a sequel to Creepshow than a tame Twilight Zone-like TV series. |
