Do we know if the footage even survives? I just can't see Mann wanting to revisit this one at this stage, and given their resources I suspect Kino would have been quite willing to consent to Mann's demands and fund some kind of new cut (if possible) - if he so wished.

I really think an official release of The Keep will just have to wait until Mann passes.

Yeah, me too. It's among an elite group of films that I want to see on Blu-ray more than any other films. Others in that rarefied list include The Crawling Eye (aka The Trollenberg Terror), Second Chance (3-D), Phantom of The Rue Morgue (3-D), Gorilla At Large (3-D), Robot Monster (3-D), It Conquered the World, Invaders from Mars (1953), The Gamma People, Friday the 13th Part III (3-D), Kronos, The Amazing Colossal Man, and Something Wicked This Way Comes.

This is an open question. Mann has publicly said that they tried to find the missing footage at some point, to prep a director's recut (I believe he said, or implied, that this was DVD era), and that they finally gave up on it. Of course, he also said that he had no problem with a release of the theatrical cut, which the situation with Kino obviously calls to question. After Mann said this, there was a superfan on-line who was putting together a documentary about the making of the film, and he publicly claimed that they had found some/all of the missing footage. I haven't seen any further word or clarification. I'm an optimist, so I'm still hoping the disc was cancelled because they did find the footage and Mann wants to recut it... but I wouldn't put money on it happening.

I think it's too episodic for mainstream popularity. A more standard movie (for better or worse) would've had more of a build of the Martin Sheen subplot because it's the climax of the film.

What scenes were actually shot but dropped from the release version of The Keep? I did read the novel years ago and there was a lot of potentially great scenes that weren’t in the film but I don’t know if they were even shot. I’ve read many planned special effects sequences were cancelled when the person in charge of them died during production.

Their various mishaps aside, I think for a frequently-requested horror title like The Keep they'd have been willing to do something, knowing how well it would sell. Certainly, their resources will be at least equal to Shout's, that was my point.

But this is all hypothetical anyway, for I doubt Mann would really want to re-visit this film, I suspect he washed his hands of it long ago.

Last month they left it quite late - 6th September - but they did them all in the space of an hour or so when the time came. I'd be surprised if they left it till Monday, so maybe we'll get something later today.

I found this site; I have a vague memory of an even more detailed version of the same content, but I can't find it.

We already know most of them though, so I don't see any point in that.
