I like all eras. I don't watch much silent films any more but I watched most of the Charlie Chaplin films and Faust when they were on pay TV when I was a teenager. Even when I was younger if it was horror, I didn't care if it was silent. I would watch it. I like all genres, but horror films are my favorites. I don't care when a film was made, if I enjoy it. I'm unlikely to buy silent films though, I should add.

That era is pretty much farmed out already with regard to Blu-ray releases, though. There are a few stragglers (April Fool's Day, etc.), but most of the current new announcements are for double-dip improved transfer editions of existing Blu-rays. In addition to my "golden decade", though, I have a few wishlist goals that I would like to accomplish as I make the slow transition to retiring from Blu-ray purchases. 1. I want the remaining Val Lewton titles to be released on Blu-ray. 2. I want the remaining Hammer Studios titles to be released on Blu-ray. 3. I want the rest of the Universal Sci-Fi Classics Collection to be released on Blu-ray. Each month that Scream Factory announces something from the above three categories, I'm on cloud nine. |

I'm a film fan first and foremost and so while Hammer films certainly don't rate anywhere near the top of my priority list, I can appreciate that style of film making and the era from which it came. Hammer films offer a nice alternative to what I normally watch, though I'm not necessary in the mood to watch them all that often.

Your second point about discretionary spending on Blus really nails it for me. I too would love to seek out more from eras in horror filmmaking I am not as familiar with, but with Shout/Scream's inane pricing structures and their enforcement of it across the board, it becomes more and more difficult to blind buy. I just can't afford to buy everything and it's easy to say, oh just resell it if you don't like it, but even as an occasional reseller, I have to say that's not always as easy as it sounds when you factor in having a life away from the hobby with other priorities in effect. I've said it elsewhere, but I don't care, I'm saying it again here: No matter how much KINO gets knocked for their various mistakes, mistakes I readily acknowledge, more often than not they get it right. With their regular sales you can easily sample a lot of unknown titles. During their current one I picked up 12 Blus which averaged out to be $8.00 each shipped. No other label can make the claim of being as blind buy friendly as KINO. So they may not be packed with extras or slipcovers or posters, none of that matters to me if I don't wind up even liking the movie! Sometimes I just want to SEE THE MOVIE I keep reading recommendations of in this thread, but not throw $25 at it because it has an interview with the assistant make-up artist's wife's second cousin's cat. |

I knew there was something I wanted to grab from the SF OOP list but couldn't remember - thanks for reminding me. Purchased III & IV from Amazon for $22.99 but wasn't willing to pay $30 for Part II. Ordered it from Bullmoose for $20 but it says "Rare item - OOP" so I'm thinking it may be a while before they source a copy. They took payment for it so that tells me it's not going to be impossible.

being a fan of Connery, I admit that helps a lot in my enjoyment of the film. Without him in it I could see people thinking this was just an ordinary sci-fi flick.

I also enjoyed OUTLAND. One of my favorite things in it is Frances Sternhagen's none too subtle sexual attraction to Connery. It's just nice to see an older woman in a movie display some sexual desire, something you rarely see depicted in American films.

I was barely a few years old when it came out, so I didn't see it until many years later. I've always loved its dirty, lived-in look that sci-fi movies from that era tended to have, including Alien and Blade Runner. But my dad saw it in the theater and even had a hat with a replica of the patch on Connery's hat. (He had a USS Nostromo hat, too.) He said every so often somebody in a store would recognize it and stop him to ask where he'd gotten it.
