Put it this way if Disney had paid 71.3 billion dollars for Fox and after everything was finalized was told after the acquisition in March of 2019, that Star Wars already has a 5 year distribution (licensing) deal with Shout Factory, that Disney would have paid that amount only to have to wait another 5 years or so to be able to release their own Blu-Ray or Streaming purposes? I'd say No. My point is that even though Fox made the deal with Shout Factory, I'm sure Disney looked at the catalogue of Films that was part of the deal and allowed for them to be used. Plus Disney let Shout Factory release Gravity Falls on DVD, so what makes everyone think they'd prevent them from releasing others films as well? Getting back to Foxney, it would've made sense for Shout and Criterion to have gotten in deals before the merger finalized, and the reason why they're announcing the new Fox titles now is because Disney briefed over what took place before they stopped granting new licences and still approved it. Gravity Falls is a one off from Disney and only happened because the shows creator Alex Hirsch originally pushed Disney for a complete series release, but were uninterested due chances of it being unprofitable. Hirsch went to Shout and got them to make pricey offers to Disney until they gave in. Even then Shout were lucky enough to succeed getting a Disney title as Disney very rarely licences out TV shows and films put out through their banner, as evidenced by the hassles Kino Lorber had to face with only getting the ABC/Selznick catalog and the Touchstone/Hollywood titles Disney never put out themselves. I heard that Alex Hirsch originally asked Disney to release a complete series set and they weren't interested in doing it, but to say he got Shout to make pricey offers to Disney is a bit of a stretch, since Shout would be gambling on a high license deal that might not recoup the cost. I'm sure they asked Disney for it and Disney told them how much it would cost and they ironed out the rest. Now Disney in the past let Anchor Bay release some of their own back catalogue when DVD was new, I don't see them ever doing that again because of Disney+. But I could see them letting Shout or Kino release something like Trenchcoat (1983) in the future maybe. Obviously with their Fox titles anything that is Family friendly would go to Disney+ or the latter and all TV-shows to either Disney+ or Hulu. The big blockbusters and franchises will get released by Disney in other formats as well. But films like Brian DePalma's The Fury (1978) I could see Disney letting Shout or Kino release that at some point. I'm not saying today or in 2021, but eventually down the line. Disney has shown their open to letting others release their films, I'm sure whatever contract they make them sign is the same that WB or Paramount made SF jump through. The only studio who's ever been a hold out on licensing their catalogue has been Lionsgate. |

Speaking of Oliver Reed, I wonder why The Trap (1966) hasn't been released on blu ray. That film would look beautiful in HD. I even checked the U.K. but found nothing...

The Anchor Bay DVD deal they had was also not without problems. Disney were strict with them too in that they couldn't have the Disney or Buena Vista presents tags mentioned on the art/disc and had the distribution logos trimmed as well. Watcher in the Woods was the last Anchor Bay DVD from the deal as Anchor Bay wanted out and Disney wanted to reissue the former AB titles with improved transfers and the Disney names restored to them. At least Shout was able to use the Disney name and logos on the Gravity Fall set. Likely that once Disney gets all things in order, they'll put a tighter limit on what Fox content is available for licencing and what isn't. This would mean popular mid tier properties like Home Alone, Office Space, Commando, and some of the animated stuff won't be available. But things like The Fury or Titan A.E Foxney won't put out on BD themselves, so they'd likely be up for grabs to whichever label expressed interest. Shout tried for many years to get the Omen films, but it was still Fox's bigger property at the time and originally had plans to release remastered BDs of the 1976 Omen and the 2006 remake (which are the only Omen films to have 4k masters). Fox abandoned those plans when they saw the Damien series tanking and getting canned after 1 season. As Fox pretty much left the Omen franchise dormant, they eventually took Shout's offer just before the merger which miraculously got us a nicer Omen collection. |

Someone with Facebook has stated that Scream Factory has said that CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF will be in 1:85-1. Yes, this is third-hand information, but it might be of interest anyway, if true.

We basically agree on everything, I just find it weird that people keep acting as if Disney is going to stop letting licensing from happening ever again. It's obvious that most Disney branded films are all family rated G or PG so will only be available on Disney+ and that would go the same with any Fox family films (Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire etc) that fit the Disney mold. Now with Fox Horror Films, Disney will never license out Alien Series, Predator Series and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I could even see them refusing to let SF renew licensing the Omen and the Fly series in the future. I could see them allowing SF to license Jennifer's Body, The Fury and What Lies Beneath etc. The Grey area could be films like 28 Days Later/weeks where Disney might feel theres potential for more films or tv-shows in the future. Now from my understanding most Studios don't allow region free disc. Now we don't know if Disney had other deals outside North American with the licensing rights with GF, that's probably why they had it locked to region 1/A. They might even look at the North American Sales figures and decide to release it themselves in other Countries!! Anytime I've heard a disc being Region Free it wasn't actually supposed to be, the film was never locked. Only Criterion and Arrow has ever done that and from what I understand they still mark them with the Region code of the country it was being sold in and you have to buy it to find out if it'll play in your country or not..... |

If it's true that titles they aren't willing to put out themselves would be available to outside parties, then I can soon look forward to finally getting "Song of the South" on Blu! Excellent news!
