I remember the anthology TV series getting good reviews, but I think that was largely unrelated to the movies, right? So my question is: Are any of these genuinely good horror movies or is the affection based more on guilty pleasure nostalgia? I’m always up for giving things a chance and a second chance.
I watched the first Friday the 13th movie for the first time last year.

Good mindless fun - if a little long and slow at times - but I can see why the series, or at least the first movie, is so popular. Plus, Kevin Bacon is in it!

I watched a few of the sequels as a kid, but I couldn't tell you which ones. The only one I remember for sure is Part 5, with Dudley from Diff'rent Strokes, which I liked well enough but people insist it's the worst one.

I was always a Freddy guy.
If you have the documentary Crystal Lake Memories, I recommend watching each movie, followed by each corresponding chapter in the doc. That really enhances the experience.

As for the other movies, I don't know... It's been so long since I've seen any of them, and I couldn't even tell you which ones I saw.

To be honest, while the first movie slightly exceeded my rightfully low expectations, I haven't exactly been motivated to continue the series.

Freddy > Jason.

True there are capabilities to doing these at home, but depending on the talent's technical ability (and available equipment) I think maybe causing an issue. Regardless, even if they somehow managed to film a bunch of interviews, there would be no one in the post-production houses to edit, color time, sound loop, etc. Personally I would rather have these releases delayed and still get the quality features I've come to expect from Shout!, than have them star shipping out bare-bones or archival only features...

Yes, they were. I have fond memories of those exact same situations. Staying up late at night to watch the hosted horror movie shows of the old days, Chiller Theater, Thriller, Creature Feature with Count Gore De Vol. They would fade in and out even though we had a very large outdoor antenna, and lived out in the country. I had all of the Aurora monster models from back in the day around 1969.

Agree 100%. Delays are frustrating but I can deal with reasonable delays if I know what's coming. The "element of surprise" isn't a thing anymore with Amazon and other sources spilling the beans early. Just tell us what to expect.

I hate to break the news to you, but not all of us on this site or on this thread in particular were kids in the 80's and have unqualified nostalgia for every little thing from that era. If you're happy on your "planet," that's fine, but don't expect everyone to live there, dude.

And based on the couple of answers so far to my question, the movies sound like an easy pass. Sorry.

Every little thing lol. You act as if those movies aren't hugely popular. I swear the oldest people here are the most condescending.

Funny enough, despite being an '80s kid, I never watched any of these movies until the early-2000s, when I was already in my 20s. I didn't like horror growing up, especially of the slasher variety, although I was well aware of who Freddy and Jason were just because of pop culture. So I have no childhood nostalgia for these films but enjoy them just the same for the simple little fun/spooky campfire ghost story-esque movies they are.

And the 80's kids are the most self-absorbed, narrow minded and least worldly people on the planet. Of course, I don't really believe that, but every time anyone says anything about something from the 80's perhaps not being as genuinely good as an 80's kid thinks it is or how it might be clouded by childhood nostalgia, they get bent out of shape. Folks get overly defensive and insulting to anyone who doesn't agree with them. Truly, man, it's ok if someone doesn't share YOUR childhood experiences and nostalgia. If you can't admit there were things in the pop culture of your childhood that maybe weren't so great, more power to you. But really, it doesn't matter if movies are "popular," I asked if they were any GOOD. Those two things don't always go together.

Anyway, I asked what I thought was a simple question and one I was very curious to know the answer to and instead I've been insulted. Boo hoo. Well, let's all enjoy what we all enjoy and leave it at that. I'm done with this thread, but I wish you a nice day.

I'm a 70's kid, and to answer your question, no, they are not great spooky films. I enjoy the first four, yes nostalgia plays into my enjoyment. It was fun to watch these movies, looking to see the effects, and how ingenious the gags(effects) were executed. After the PMRC got on the scene, the effects were neutered-negating the whole fun of the gags, IMO.

I do own the set but, I seldom watch any other than the first four.

So it sounds like you’re from the 80’s then, based on your blanket statement and acting according to it.

Even I haven't seen all of them, and I actually grew up in the early '80s. I think I've seen the first four. I was never interested in seeing the rest.

If you would read past the opening line of my post you will clearly see that I state I don’t believe any of those things about 80’s kids. I was trying to illustrate how I felt by the post that stereotyped me as a condescending older person and asked what planet I’m from. Was my sincere question about the Friday The 13th movies so offensive?

I don’t have anything against any kids from any era or their nostalgia, but I have seen lots of intolerance in this specific thread for anything that has no connection to an 80’s childhood. Look at the all the blanket negativity heaped on any Shout release announcement of a non-80’s title. I was in my 20’s during the 80’s and have very fond memories of the decade, but they may not be the same as the majority here. Fair enough. Today kind of made me feel that I’m not welcome in this thread, so I am moving on, but I wanted to clear the record about my previous post. All nostalgia should be welcome on this site.

sometimes i forget not everyone rented 80s slashers and watched them on repeat while eating pizza hut and drinking mountain dew when they were young. i hyped up Sleepaway Camp so much to my girlfriend, we just watched it, her first time and my 100th time, and i loved every second of it, while she just commented on the flaws. further keeping this Scream Factory related, i'm showing her The Final Terror and Slumber Party Massacre tonight.

40th Ann Steel of Rock n Roll High School was excellent, the making of doc was really enlightening and entertaining, really gave a good feel for what working for Corman was like.
