Yeah, also, HOWLING II would look great on Blu-ray. Love the film or hate it, I think they made fantastic use of those Czech locales ... it's a pretty atmospheric flick. Plus, I'd kill to hear that awesome New Wave soundtrack in uncompressed audio.

Isn't the soundtrack just that same mind-numbing one-verse title track repeated every five minutes?

There's TWO songs.

Three if you count the instrumental version.

Too bad it seems like it was edited by a chimpanzee. The wanky editing literally destroys any atmosphere that it might've attained otherwise...

Oh yeah, and that horrid song. It's played at least 3-4 times during the movie, and always with shots of the band playing it.

This is kind of a random, general question....

If Scream Factory were to, hypothetically speaking, acquire say Tremors (or inset previously released but substandard release of whatever movie) would Scream be stuck with the transfer given to them from the studio or would Scream be able to get access to a print of the film and do the transfer themselves?

the point I'm angling towards is if holding out hope for a better release of say....The Thing, Tremors, or whatever (not necessarily singling out Universal here, but their catalogue titles have been sketchy and provide the best example) is a good idea or not.... I'd love to see a proper Tremors release and true collector's edition of The Thing.... as examples, but own the previously released versions.

I don't know if they do the transfers themselves, but Halloween 2 had a different transfer from the original Universal release. They also included a lossless audio track, whereas the Universal release originally only had a lossy track. So, I'm sure that if a transfer can be improved upon, Scream Factory will do whatever they can to make their version the better release.

I thought Universal's re-released version (with Akkad credit) was lossless?

The re-release is lossless, but the original release was lossy.

I remember back in the DVD days, their releases were always super pricey but usually had great transfers. They do seem to have little interest in catalog titles on BD.

Especially since they recently licensed away hundreds of films to Warner for home video. Guess they really have no interest in handling catalog titles on blu anymore...

Not entirely true. The two discs do not have identical video, but this is due to the additional processing work that was applied to the Scream Factory release. Cliff had mentioned at one time (probably in the original Scream Factory thread that was wiped out in it's entirety last year), that the HD master Universal supplied to Scream Factory was the same one that had been used for the Universal release(s), but that he would be applying some additional touch up work to it.

Paramount are useless. April Fools Day doesn't need another DVD release (its had 2 already), it needs a Blu ray release damn it!!!.

I'm so glad Paramount don't have rights to the F13th series anymore.

I wonder if the Amityville box (no official confirmation, but no other suggestion has fit the clue) will be 3 discs or 2, a la the Women in Cages set?

If a 3D copy of Amityville III is included, it'll be at least 3 discs.

3D would be pretty sweet (and would cement a purchase on my part), but how likely is that?

I don't know if they do the transfers themselves, but Halloween 2 had a different transfer from the original Universal release. They also included a lossless audio track, whereas the Universal release originally only had a lossy track. So, I'm sure that if a transfer can be improved upon, Scream Factory will do whatever they can to make their version the better release.
In the case of Halloween II, as someone else said, it was the same transfer, Shout just did some dirt and speck removal on it. The revised release of the Universal version also had a lossless audio track; that wasn't exclusive to the Scream release.

As far as the original question goes, I think it's more of a case by case basis, but more often than not, it's them being given a transfer rather than them doing it themselves, especially when you take into account the cost of doing a new transfer.
