I ordered TFTD on 05/05, they created a shipping label on 08/11, it had shown no movement until 08/29. I emailed them on 08/27-asking if they could look into it. They replied that the PO is sometimes not scanning packages properly. Hopefully, I do get the poster(which sold out in July).

Yeah the poster for that sold out on July 25. Not sure when you ordered it. The price is still $28 because that's the price they sell it for, the poster has nothing to do with the price. They drop the price after it's been out for a couple months. If you want the poster you really have to order on day one or a least the first couple weeks.

This.

In Gunnar Hansen's excellent book on the making of TCM, the cinematographer Daniel Pearl mentions how he visited his wife Dorothy on the set of 1941. Dorothy did make-up on TCM and was an assistant make-up artist on 1941 (and would incidentally also work on Poltergeist later). When Spielberg found out who her husband was he basically became all fanboy-ish and spend a lot of time discussing the cinematography of TCM with Pearl, especially picking his brains about that one famous tracking-shot under the swing.

Poster is a bonus for pre or early orders. Price won't change when they run out. Heard one time they only print the slipcovers for a year.

Actually, Shout/Scream only guarantees slips for three months.

I ordered Tales From the Darkside direct from Shout hoping to get it early, not for the poster, but they failed miserably. Took way too long to ship. At least it arrived 2 days early. My copy had a creased slipcover. Their slips are way too flimsy.

Yeah, for what Shout charges, I'd like to see them step up their quality of slipcovers to like Arrow and VS quality...

That's definitely true! I just received four CEs of Hammer titles. All four slips had creases. They should not shrink-wrap the slips. Perhaps that would cut down on the creases of these flimsy slipcovers.

Even DiabolikDVD has a disclaimer regarding SF's slips: "While we do our best to make sure the slipcovers we send out are in the best possible condition, we cannot guarantee mint condition slipcovers on this title. We cannot replace or accept returns of slipcovers."

Shout Factory really needs to correct this problem.

They never used too but it resulted in a large number of folks not getting them then from a variety of retailers, even when pre-ordering. Personally I'll take my chances of getting a slightly creased or dented slip over not getting one at all if I'm taking the time to pre-order. Without the shrinkwrap they'd also have to do away with their slipcover guarantee as there are some retail outlets that toss them regularly. (Wal-Mart, Barnes & Noble for example).

In my mind the only real alternative is to go the way of Vinegar Syndrome and charge more for the privilege of a slipcover thus raising prices even more for Shout releases, while then selling a slipless version for slightly less through conventional retail channels. (By slightly less, I mean current prices but now without the benefit of a slip).

You can find photos of him almost looking like a director on the set of The Goonies and Gremlins as well. It's just there wasn't a concerted effort by the studio's marketing department to push photos showing Spielberg doing nothing more than be an involved producer (which is all that a photo can really do).

I'd argue it was the other way around, if the sheer number of divergences and seemingly spontaneous additions/eliminations from the script suggest a constant subverter of Spielberg's "big picture vision." It's negligent to suggest the "E.T. Contract" theory has any validity when the film was Hooper's initial concept and had shook hand with Spielberg to direct it before Spielberg even conceived of "E.T." with Melissa Matheson.

Yes. The film has a much more objective, restrained approach to images - ones that focus on architecture and the oppressive nature of enclosed spaces - and also a clear sense of artificiality that is much more in line with Hooper's work than Spielberg's.

Hooper birthed the entire idea to make Poltergeist and went on to co-develop or sign-off on its direction, before he and Spielberg essentially co-concocted the final shooting script (with help from Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy). He was not just "hired"... he was an integral part of the film's conception, and it's a weird phenomenon for people to ignore that even though it's been included in the history by everyone's go-to source of verified facts, Wikipedia. Spielberg was trying to produce more entering the 80s, and so: "When Spielberg approached Hooper to direct [alien invasion film "Night Skies"], Hooper was less keen on the sci-fi elements and suggested the idea of a ghost story. Spielberg and Hooper would then go on to collaborate on the first treatment for the film."

Nah.
Spielberg doesn't think in terms of architecture and oppressiveness. There's also a stillness and soft-focus haziness (as opposed to the more overt things in Spielberg films, like Marion foregrounded by the candle flame - instead, we can never really tell what backgrounds characters in Hooper's films) in Poltergeist that bypasses any of Spielberg's constant kinetics. That is all Hooper did up to that point.

For more: https://twitter.com/poltrgthts_imag/

John Leonetti's entire argument boils down to: 1) The film was heavily storyboarded (but does he know how often the storyboards were completely thrown out? Hooper often stated his lack of interest in using storyboards, despite the necessity of them in a film of this budget); 2) Spielberg would invite them to his house to show dailies (sounds like a producer); 3) "Sometimes Spielberg would leave the set and let Hooper do his own thing just because." So Spielberg directed it, but he was the one who would leave the set? 4) "Steven developed the film, it was his to direct." That's objectively wrong and indicates a person who is not in control of the knowledge he purports to have. The film was always agreed to be Hooper's as it was his pitch. Once the script was written, Spielberg was always the hanger-on to Hooper's concerted effort (every account of the film's pre-production - yes, including that one anonymous Spielberg supporter - state Hooper was the main person in charge during pre-production. Their relationship on the set is the only thing that has caused ay confusion, and it's a fuzzy area that no one really has any right to come to conclusions about except Hooper and Spielberg themselves. Hooper maintains the film definitely feels like his style, pushed to a different territory by his collaborator Spielberg, as all his films tend to change between their varying inspirations).

The pool scene reminds me of Texas Chain Saw's dinner scene, and JoBeth Williams slipping back in the pool (not in the storyboards) very much like Marilyn Burns jumping through windows twice. And what Spielberg did doesn't say anything about directing, nor does Williams's remarks ever say anything about Spielberg staying in there the entire time. The pictures we have of the shooting of that scene show Hooper presiding over the set and numerous puppeteers surrounding Williams - in the pool - as they needed to control the corpses, Spielberg nowhere to be found. That said, that scene took days to shoot, so we have no idea really what happened through the course of those days. Sounds like Spielberg did it as little more than a demonstration.

Again, everything being said is little more than speculation. Outside of every outspoken and non-biased actor stating Hooper directed them almost exclusively, here's an on-the-record story of Beatrice Straight putting her foot down at Spielberg's overbearing presence (the same sort of behavior he is said to have had on sets like Used Cars and The Goonies) and stating who exactly she was going to listen to:

Here is the other actor's statements:

Finally, about Invaders from Mars, check out the first act of the film Canon Pictures cut out in this rough cut of the film, as they weren't interested in a "character development director": 'Invaders From Mars' Rough Cut - YouTube. It may clear up some misconceptions that Hooper always got to do exactly what he wanted to do, and that what he wanted to do automatically isn't Poltergeist.
Thanks for posting this. I like the scene right before the mother is taken up over the hill to be implanted. Bottoms is very creepy in that scene with his head movements and line reading. Too bad it was cut. Surprisingly the scene from the trailer of Bottoms coming down the hill and being confronted by David is not even in this rough cut. It must’ve of been cut early on. We also get a cut scene of an alien throwing up.

Hope someone picks up the three Stuart Gordon titles, as they all deserve to remain in-print.

it’s been out for seven years. i love this movie and proudly have it in my collection... but i can’t imagine they are still selling a ton of copies.

that being said, if for some reason you don’t have this in your collection... you should absolutely grab it now while you can. the disc has some great extras. and the practical fix are amazing. one of the best movies of its type of the 80s

Obviously certain titles aren't leaving as we're getting new versions of Pumpkinhead and Motel Hell, but it's not looking good for everything.

Did someone ever post a list of all the MGM titles? Just in case...

skimming through all the titles they have, i can't tell exactly which ones are MGM and aren't- Lifeforce got a steelbook upgrade lately, so I imagine that'll stay for a while, along with Howling and Night of the Demons.

but I'm really hoping one of those titles they hold onto and do a new remaster for is Return of the Living Dead. i have the sequel and was watching the two back-to-back the other night, and it really struck me how much better 2 looks than the first one. which feels like a shame.. but i'd like from them to not do it on a steelbook- jarring to have one movie on a steelbook where you know you'll almost never be able to get any of its sequels to match-

Didn't see an alert on this but Breakin / Breakin 2 Double Feature is now sold out on Shout's website now.

Amazon still has copies, though.

Anyone have and seen Pet Sematary 2? I like the remake, and the original is great. But I'm not sure if I should take the chance on it. I did on Silver bullet and loved it. But I've been burnt by some Scream titles before.
If it sucks I might just then go for My Bloody Valentine.

but the annoying thing is most of their coupons only work for some special subset of customers they select (maybe they'd lose too much allowing this to work once for everyone, but it's still annoying, again and again see coupons and they never work, maybe they'd be better off making $5 ones that work for everyone when they do put them out)

I have it. The movie itself isn't the worst thing you'll ever see. Clancy Brown steals the show in my opinion & is worth watching for. Ed Furlong is pretty good too. As a sequel it doesn't follow up much on the first film outside of a brief mention early on. It's early 90s horror fare. I'm not sure what the price currently is; but I think I got mine for $18 on eBay & think it was worth the purchase.

If you're torn between Pet Sematary 2 & My Bloody Valentine; I will say, My Bloody Valentine is a much better movie. It's one I revisit regularly vs Pet Sematary 2 where I might pop it in every few years.
