Now because of the boutiques, I have discovered so many I love, I would have liked to have seen them "in the now".

So I try to watch modern horror. The problem is so MANY are shit. Wal-marts wall is full of that. Last year I WASTED so much money on that Scream Factory going OOP IFC sale! What crap! However, I found two there I really liked. Shudders and Netflixs offerings give so many crap ones, but once in a while you strike gold. I can't help but feel this is no different then taking chances on the VHS walls in the rental stores in the 80's.

On the drama horror, I am not a fan, but like they exist as its a different sub-genre that some people do dig.

I would love if modern horror all had more t&a and weren't so prudish (since the 90's), but they still make them, you just got to find them. And then you have to find them that you like.

Great modern horrors of all sub-genres are still happening, its just finding them when there's only so much time to watch stuff. I understand not wanting to waste time trying.
That's it. They flood the market with so many releases it's impossible to believe every one will be great. But there will be diamonds in the rough.

I think part of the issue is actors don't want to take their clothes off on-camera anymore. They probably go so far as to insist on no-nudity clauses before taking jobs. All of this is, of course, just happening in the US - Europeans still disrobe without batting an eye

I asked for it a few times. Definitely a day one buy.

I agree that's absolutely the case added to the PG-13 rating studios want for teen money.

10 out of 10 for Midsomer minus 2 for being way to long, minus 3 for no Flourence tits, minus 2 for shamelessly rehashing Wicker Man = 3 out of 10 for good gore, albeit not much and an well acted somewhat entertaining one time watch.

Not as good as Birds II

It's not traditional horror in the sense that it isn't THAT scary and yes, you're right, it's horrible.

Lift the basic premise of The Wicker Man and, instead of grounding it in a well researched/constructed script, make it as nonsensical as possible.

Indeed! Midsommar was a crap movie that bored me to tears. An exercise in pretentiousness and needed 45 minutes cut from it...at least.

Who decides what traditional hororr is? This isn't an argument as much as it is gatekeeping.

Also Midsommar and The Wicker Man have about as much in common as Silent Night, Deadly Night does with Christmas Evil. There are some shallow similarities, but tonally and thematically they're wildly different.

Wow, haven't seen a lot of people who didn't love Midsommar (it's not for me) but if I'm being honest - I didn't care for Hereditary for a lot of the same criticisms being made for the former.

Seriously. I absolutely hate it when people say things like "it aint horror if it aint scary." I see it all the time from people that don't watch many horror movies, or from numbskulls that only like movies with lots of jump scares.

I have been truly scared by maybe 10 movies in my entire life, and half of those weren't even horror movies, they just had something that scared me when I was a little kid. I've seen hundreds and hundreds of horror movies, and love them. "Scariness" is such an idiotic measure for classifying something. What do you call a non-scary movie that's very obviously trying to be scary? Probably a comedy or something. "If you laugh its a comedy lol"

If you're over the age of 15 or 16, being authentically "scared" by a movie is baffling to me. I used to sleep with the sheets over my head because I was afraid of the dark...but I was, like, eight. I love horror movies, but I can't remember the last time I had a nightmare after watching one. Thus, chiding a horror movie for not being "scary" is absurd if you're a grown-assed adult.

I gotta admit I find the term scary for describing horror movies as obsolete but then again I'm over 50. I could see it if you haven't seen a lot or are young. Now I prefer the term creepy, like it has a creepy vibe. It's more about atmosphere now. I also don't judge horror by how much blood is flowing. Some of my favorites have very little.

Horror or not. I just dislike Midsommar. OK?

To me, a truly good horror film is disturbing, intense, unnerving, suspenseful, atmospheric. I'm not sure I've ever found a horror movie to be scary, even as a child. When I watched Halloween as a kid on NBC, it had an effect on me only while I was watching it. After it was over...it was over. It's the same now. While I'm watching a horror movie, I want to have some sort of emotional response. But I have always known the movie is just that: a movie.

I'm a huge horror fan, but they rarely scare me, probably because so many of them are formulaic. A horror movie needs to have suspense and dread to really get its hooks into me.

The first time I saw Paranormal Activity, I was alone, late at night, and the movie absolutely scared me. For me, quiet scares in an eerie atmosphere are far more effective than cheap jump scares or gallons of blood. The Innkeepers has zero gore, but it is one of the most unsettling films I've ever seen, precisely because we never see the ghosts. Nothing can scare you like your own imagination.

The only horror movie that still unsettles me, unnerves me & still gets under my skin (especially if I watch it in the dark) is The Exorcist.

Actually, I used to get pleasurable goosebumps when I found something I was watching may be creepy or very atmospheric. It hasn't happened much lately though.

Part of the reason why modern horror movies aren't scary is because of the way they're shot these days. What's scary about a super clean image and sleek production values? That's fine for Marvel films but not for horror. Get down and dirty. Film cameras can still be found, no? Grab an old 16 mil and get out there. Forget about permits. Hire nobodies. Sam Raimi style before he forgot his roots

I agree on the more filmic (have no idea if this is a term lol) look thats lacking in today's movies. I'm not sure on this but I think more indie film makers don't use it because it's far more expensive now to use. Probably takes a lot longer to edit too. Just guessing but it does make a difference.
