you really think Universal is going to give the rights to The Thing to Scream? my guess is probably not

I've pre- ordered all of them, but I might drop "terror train" for another time...i never really liked it a whole lot, def not as much as the Halloween movies or "the funhouse".

Why not? The Thing wasn't a big hit upon release, mind you it has became popular over time but it's still not that huge of a title for them is it? No bigger then Halloween 2. The remake pretty much bombed. The Blu Ray was thrown out early in Blu Rays release, not even including the extras from the DVD. And they didn't even bother to re-release it with a snazzy slipcover for their 100th Anniversary like they did a lot of their catalog, it's constantly just thrown in the $10 bins.

These are all valid points as to why Universal just might hand over the rights for "The Thing" to Scream Factory. SF is already proving they know how to give films, whether they've been released on DVD/Blu-ray before or not, a solid release. Personally, I'm really looking forward to hearing about more titles they've acquired that have never seen a release. I hope the first batch of 2013 titles is a nice mix-up of beefed out re-releases and never before released titles with a little more emphasis on these. A nice 60/40 split would be awesome.

yea the remake/prequel is horrible.. but Universal is much more popular then Halloween II.. its up their will Halloween for one of the best horror movies ever made.. i see Universal rereleasing The Thing as part of their Universal 100th anniversary series with the slip and DVD and DC

I suppose it's possible but I see it as being unlikely. Universal's 100th Anniversary is almost coming to a close and it seems like they'll be going out with a bang with releases like "E.T.". If they were going to re-release "The Thing" in any sort of new packaging or special edition, I would have had it pegged for the Halloween season but it doesn't seem like that's going to happen. I feel like after "The Thing" remake didn't meet their financial expectations, they probably want to step out of any related "Thing" business for a little bit.

A shame that the elements just weren't in the kind of condition to lend itself to a solid transition to Blu but considering the majority of the Corman films were in pretty bad shape when Shout took over, it's a real miracle we got so many in the terrific way we did.
No problem.

It looked fine to me in motion, but I understand Shout/Scream wants to keep a consistent stream of quality going.

If anyone wants the uncompressed caps I'll see if I can send them to them.

MGM has released this, and might even have the best copy of the film from which to make a transfer... I think I bought their DVD release, but I can't remember... and I know it has aired on the MGM HD movie channel.

But... as far as I'm aware, the movie itself is in the public domain.

I think they just uprez'd an old full frame master. Corman didn't have an HD transfer and I doubt Epix did a new transfer in 4x3.

yea you're probably right.. if they were going for a 100 BDs with their new slip series they need to start getting a move on it.. 4 months left and they currently have 50 titles out now.. I can't see them pushing out another 50 in 4 months .. plus E.T. is not part of the series but Jaws was.. i found that a little strange

Thanks for the pics!

I really need to pick up the DVD set. I need to upgrade the New Concorde DVD's. I still wish they would come to Blu-Ray, but I understand that it's not worth it to make them.

Without derailing this thread into a full on Universal discussion, I'm not sure Universal's intent was to release 100 Blu-ray's to commemorate the 100th anniversary. At least I've never heard that being their plan. Although, there's plenty of DVD releases that aren't receiving Blu-ray's that are apart of the 100th Anniversary banner including "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Scarface" (1932). I'm so pleased that "Jaws" is out on Blu-ray but I definitely felt they released it in a very underwhelming packaging, I was really expecting it to at least get a digibook but oh well, the disc and contents all are wonderful.

I remember reading that issue of Cinefantastique. I would also love to see all that stuff, if it still exists.

Trust me, I agree The Thing is up there as one of the best horror movies of all time, but it just doesn't have as large of an audience as a lot of other popular horror films. It has always been more of a cult film where horror fans love it but the average moviegoer knows nothing about it. You would be surprised how many people didn't know The Thing (2011) was a remake?

Either way, if they got Halloween 2 (Which I stand by is just as popular to the average filmgoer), as well as people hoping for Army of Darkness and the Friday the 13th films (Which in my opinion are both more popular) I wouldn't say it's out of reason for SF to get The Thing.

And I believe Universal announced what titles they were releasing and/ or re-releasing as part of their 100th Anniversary series and The Thing wasn't mentioned. Disappointing as I love would a cool slipcover for it as well as for it to include the DVD with all it's extras.

Jaws got released as a digibook here in Canada. I believed it was released in the US as well, but only as a BB exclusive. It's too bad as it's a really nice book! E.T. is getting released as a digibook here as well (And a steebook as a FS exclusive). Not sure about the US for E.T. though.

I would be all over all of these, but especially the titles in blue.
Shout Factory already released KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS.

Oh yeah that's right, I thought the Best Buy exclusive was a steel book. Thanks for the heads up on the Canadian edition.

It has a totally different set of extras than the Arrow release (deleted scenes, different featurettes, etc.)
