I upgraded the first two Evil Dead films to 4K and ditched my DVD of AOD this past year, so I'll have to get a previous release to watch in my marathon this year. I suppose I'll get the Scream collector's edition in case they end up omitting some of the cuts or extras on the 4K. |

To be fair WAC doesn’t have a spotless record when it comes to QC either. I can’t believe they never fixed their trash release of Leatherface. I’m actually hoping Scream can get their hands on that one and give it a proper release.

It's worth bearing in mind that Warner do the scans for Scream Factory, so I see no reason why many of the titles they've licenced wouldn't get the same treatment if they were part of the Warner Archive line (let's face it, they're not exactly the most prestigious films in Warner's library). I'm guessing the only reason Return to Salem's Lot is getting a 4K scan of the OCN is because it's the best surviving element in Warner's archives. |

Well we've seen a couple of new Paramount announcements this year, so who knows if there are more titles from that deal to reveal. But even so, I think Warner Bros, even now, offers the most potential releases for Scream Factory in terms of the major studios (there's still many 60s and 70s titles in terms of new to Blu-ray candidates, not to mention those with double dip CE potential), so it makes sense for them to cultivate this relationship as much as possible.

I'd say SF releasing Deadly Friend and Killer Party and Nothing But Trouble on the Select line, definitely makes up for October being a "Light" month....

Also, The film suffered severe cuts by the MPAA. As a result, most of the murders occur off-camera and feature little to no gore or violence. Because of this, the filmmakers edited the film in such a way in that the murders seem to happen immediately after each other in quick succession... I'm disappointed to say that the theatrical version is unwatchable for me. The editing is bad and the cuts are way too obvious. Noticing all of that and knowing what could have been spoils the party for me. Did SF really have access to Warner's archive/vaults to check for cut footage? I doubt it. |

What's done is done - nothing we can do about it now. I'm just glad we're getting an HD upgrade of the film and would never "boycott" a release because of what some shortsighted studio executives decided a long time ago. Also, I don't doubt SF's claims that they tried to find the footage. As they said, they're big fans too. |

Cinema84 is right... "what's done is done"... But let me offer some perspective from my end... First off... let me start by saying that I'm a huge 80s Horror/Slasher fan... the more the better... and this release is normally one I would jump behind... But the fact remains... I've already spent thousands this year on physical media and where I live - shelf space is unfortunately limited right now... Killer Party would also be a blind buy for me... so I did a little research on it like I do when I blind buy titles... and I found out that these cuts were made by the studio and that most (if not all) of the kills are off screen. I'd be lying if I didn't admit that a huge reason I enjoy 80s horror/slashers is the kills! And I know this is the case with a lot of us fans... so being someone with limited shelf space who has already spent a bundle this year... I have to be a little more discriminating with my purchases. So when I found out that this film is in essence an impotent 80s horror film... this was an easy pass for me. I'm not saying I won't give this a chance down the road... maybe if it's on sale... because I will also admit that gory kills are not the ONLY thing that make an 80s horror film great... but it's definitely a big factor (IMO). So, I will not be pre-ordering this Day 1 at full price... that's all. Furthermore, if you are a fan of this film and would like to make this a DAY 1! Have at it! I support and encourage you to follow your heart! I'm sure there are films that I think are great that many here would think are a slog... everyone's tastes are their own. I just felt it would be helpful to let anyone (like me) who have never seen this film know what they were getting into before they make the purchase. That's all. |

A release loaded with extras I have no interest in ever watching is the same thing as barebones to me. But I do hasten to add that Shout often serves up solid trailers, TV/radio spots and as a student of advertising, I always welcome those. But other than pricing, I really don't see any definitive advantage between WAC over Shout or vice versa. YMMV. Last edited by Professor Echo; 08-11-2021 at 01:45 PM. |

I think there's an honest assessment to be made in this Scream Factory vs Warner Archive debate.
Last 80s horror film Warner Archive released was... ? Well, Looker came out in September 2018, I guess that might qualify. But over the course of their near 9-year existence in Blu-ray terms, I only count The Hunger, Wolfen and Night School. Compare that to Scream Factory's slate of 80s WB-owned new to Blu-ray titles this year alone: 10 by my count. And I use the 80s only as the most explicit example. I haven't counted how many horror titles Warner Archive have released since 2012, but I doubt it's over 30-35. Since the floodgates opened in May 2018, we must have seen well over 50 WB titles released on Blu-ray by Scream Factory, many of which we probably wouldn't have on Blu-ray otherwise. Clearly Warner Archive have put greater emphasis on 30s-50s titles over the past couple of years, with 70s and 80s titles hardly in abundance. Did anyone honestly think Alone in the Dark and Killer Party were just around the WA corner? Scream even gave us a couple of great Val Lewton releases when Warner obviously couldn't be all that fussed (one suspects Scream's decision to drop whatever Lewton titles they had left probably forced Warner Archive's hand at last). And I haven't even mentioned the apparent bleak prospects for Warner Archive's future. Beggars can't be choosers and all that... |

While I understand the flack that some of the “talking head” interviews get
[Show spoiler] sometimes these “lesser” titled individuals provide some cool stories and offer insight on how the set was from their POV in their “lesser” position. It’s even better if it’s a film I love…hell I’d love some random person who was on set almost everyday of Deadly Friend to talk about Wes Craven and how he handled the cast and crew and even producer interference if they witnessed some of that.

I fully get where you are coming from but mid 1980's horror was often so much more than the few seconds of kills/gore that we were allowed. There is an atmosphere or ambience to many of these films that simply doesn't exist at any other point in film history. To be blunt, these films, and the people that made them, looked like they were having fun. This often permeates throughout the picture and is a tangible quality that so many can and do pick up on from this era. Yeah it stinks that it's not everything it could be, but researching to the degree you have robs the viewer of the true blind buying experience and all of the other qualities the film may offer beyond just a handful of death sequences. |

Count me in as one who loves special features. After some of the great prices at least year's Shocktober sale, plus the lack of a summer sale this year, I'm thinking this year Shocktober might be another one for the books, softening the blow of SFs admittedly higher prices. WAC titles cost between $13-$17 on average on Amazon from my estimation, so yes $25 is much more steep for some new interviews, but in my case I love to hear about the sets and production, the cast and crew, I love film from a filmmaking stand point as much as a visual/audible stand point. As such the behind the scenes is great for me and the main reason I have more Scream Factory releases than any other label or studio. Unfortunately not everyone can have the video/audio presentation quality of Arrow, but Shout has access to a lot of good films others wouldn't or don't care about in the US. If they could just start making all of their releases the quality of their new excellent The Dead Zone.
