Here’s my upgrading to 4K philosophy: if I want it, I’m-a buy it.

Good day.

I've been told, buy countless sales people, cinephiles, and posters on this site, that bigger the 4K TV, the more you'll notice the difference between HD and UHD. Now that I have a 60 inch TV, I believe it.

Blu-ray is a format that didn't need an upgrade and not every film needs to be on 4K.
Yeah, bluray needed an upgrade. The companies and us consumers weren't going to ride a 2006 format through 2030, cmon. 4k is closer to the resolution of film/the theatrical experience, plus HDR.
I look it at this way. I think these 4k releases are the last physical releases for most if not all of these movies. If they're repressed down the line I don't think it will be a format change, just different packaging or maybe some new extras, but I'm confident the 4ks I'm buying now will remain the definitive transfers 5-10+ years from now.
Some of you guys just went all in on DVD and have already had to rebuy blus and subsequent blus with new scans, but I never had more than like 400 DVDs so I was first buying stuff on blu, and I've only had to sell a few dozen blus as I've upgraded them to 4k. And I don't need to upgrade everything.

I will not upgrade everything. A select few 4K, and I am good. Blu is kind of the end of the party for me. My wallet is lot fatter $ now.

I'm a LOT less inclined to upgrade to 4k even though I have my share of them after getting a larger and better set that also makes blu's look pretty amazing. I don't treat it as a foregone thing that'll buy every title that comes out even if it's one that I REALLY like. It's not that the upgrade is 'minimal' which is dismissive, but the difference between blu to 4k vs. dvd to blu is not quite as great. It is an upgrade in most cases, without question, but I treat it like this: if I'm looking at a title on blu and I don't actively think 'This needs to look better than it does,' then I don't need the upgrade. It's kind of like I just ate a gourmet pizza and I'm good and full and don't need anything else and then someone comes in with a pizza from a 5-star restaurant and says 'This is better than what you just ate." "Well... sure. But I just ate."

I try to upgrade most blurays to 4K. Mostly I can sell the bluray for 50-60% of the new price and use that for buying the 4K.
I got a 130" screen and 4K is clearly the better format but a really good new bluray is also good (but I prefer getting it on 4K if I can).
I got a 29" 4:3 Sony CRT for tapes and laserdisc. Works best with different set-ups.

Cause from the math its just about as much a jump in quality...
DVD resolution 720x480
Blu resolution 1920x1080
4k blu resolution 3840x2160 (4 times the pixels)
1080p screen=2 million pixels
4k TV=8 million

With Shout having a deal with WB and their being a new 4K UHD of Red Sonja coming, I hope they release this in the US. The film doesn't even have a Blu-ray here.

With my TVs out-of-the-box default settings (which on most new 4K TVs is designed for sports and video gaming), there was a huge noticeable difference between 4K and blu-ray. Once I properly calibrated my TV for movie watching, blu-rays look much better and the difference between the two doesn't seem as huge.

I noticed that on default settings, playing any 4K content would automatically trigger a change in settings (for instance, switching from standard to cinema / filmmaker mode) to optimize the look of 4K. Those settings would automatically switch back to default once the content was over. So even simply going in and manually trying to match those settings greatly improved the overall look of my TV for all content.

I'll be upgrading a few favorites and movies that have gotten major new restorations, but I'm not planning on the massive upgrade of everything the way I did from VHS and DVD to blu-ray.

I only keep stuff I love and watch more than once so why wouldn't I upgrade if even just a little improvement. Gotta give my favorites some love.

As far as that one comment...them releasing stuff on 4K has no correlation with not releasing unreleased titles. The fact is there is far less to get compared with the old days of collecting, and they are limited to who they make deals with and what they are making available. They have to sell 4K upgrades to fill in the gaps.

That's been my thing as well with 4k. It just isn't blowing my skirt up, knocking my socks off, melting my brain with it's awesomeness. Yeah it's an uptick in quality but not even close enough to do massive tech overhaul.

I've only gotten 4k of my hardcore favs and 4k upgrades of BD's that never got a proper remastered release a la Predator or Gremlins. Of course Predator and Gremlins is gonna kill the old BD on 4k, why? Because the older blu ray is subpar even by blu ray standards... had it gotten a proper remastered disc, the difference would be shrug inducing.

WB is especially notorious for pawning off ancient BD releases with their 4k copy.

No denying that 4k improves on BD in ways in general though its been debatable on certain releases, but it doesn't improve enough to make BD obsolete not by a long shot.

I've noticed mostly newer movies have a substantial increase in quality compared to the Blu rays because of HDR. But some classics I thought could never look better blow away the Blu ray too, like The Howling, Hard Target, Halloween, Tremors, Alien, Maniac Cops 2 and 3, Zombie, ect.

Did you compare the BD's that came with Howling and Halloween? Tremors had a separate Arrow BD releases so you couldn't have compared those.

I kind of have a feeling Red Sonja has clearance/right issues of some sort in the US. I think it's one of those productions murky history in terms of rights and who own what. I know that at one point two different companies Troublemaker Studios and Millenium Studios tried to reboot the movie. I know the DVD from Warner is still avalaible, but I'm think maybe it's a Angels With Dirty Faces type situation? Warner only recently managed to solve the issues with that one and finally release a bluray. I don't know, this is just all speculation and I might be wrong.

There are so many catalog titles that I don't own on any format, but yet I'm buying films that I've already bought several times. At some point the double and triple dipping needs to stop and I need to go for the catalog titles. It's too much after awhile.

Especially when no new content is offered.

It's different with something like A Fistful of Dollars and A Few Dollars More because of the incorrect color timing on the blu's.

That's different than something like Escape from LA in which I just bought the Scream blu ray last year and haven't opened it yet. And I have the older issue also. It doesn't make sense to "upgrade" for a minor picture upgrade and bonus content.

Well sure. I get that the math says it's better. And I'm not saying it's not better, re: the context of my post. Unequivocally, 4k UHD is a better technology than 1080p blu-ray. I don't think anyone is questioning that. Also. I like peppers- the spicier the better, and my porch garden is full of them. If I eat a Serrano and then eat a jalapeņo immediately after... the jalapeņo isn't all that spicy. If I don't eat a Serrano, but eat a jalapeņo, say, after not having had a pepper at all today... the jalapeņo is hella spicy. My older eyes absolutely notice the difference between UHD and blu-ray. UHD has better clarity and some sometimes suspicious HDR that makes the image stand out more than on a standard blu-ray. People should ABSOLUTELY go all in on the UHD if the presentation is demonstrably better. Sometimes... I'll be completely satisfied by a jalapeņo.

I can barely afford to keep up with new releases for movies I don't have, I don't have it in me to double dip on everything I already own. Plus I have bad luck with 4K discs.
How so?

If only I could upgrade everything I have on DVD to Blu-ray. Still makes me so sad that I own everything Star Trek on Blu-ray (pre all the new stuff) except Deep Space Nine and Voyager. Not to mention stuff like Adventures of Superman, The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman, the Incredible Hulk TV movies, the Highlander series, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (one that particularly bugs me 'cause it's gotten a HD remaster for HBO Max but I'm in Ireland so I can't watch HBO Max but does Warner think of making a Blu-ray set for fans outside the US? Do they, ****.), the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series and Angel, Xena: Warrior Princess, etc., etc., etc., etc....
