If anyone else is curious about them re-releasing My Bloody Valentine in 4k, I e-mailed them about it and received this reply:

Hi,

I wouldn't be surprised if that's in the works. We don't have anything to announce right now but we've been working on releasing some of our most popular titles on 4k with new artwork. We did Army of Darkness, The Fog, and a bunch of others. My Bloody Valentine may well be on the way! I suspect that if we do it, we'll release it in February like we did the last release as part of our Valentine's Day celebration.

All the best,

Shout!

I'm in 100% agreement with your sentiments here and find the idea of a 4k (or blu ray or dvd) purist absurd since so much content is still available across all formats (vhs/dvd/blu ray/4k and yes even digital hd).

Not on disc, no. If something isn’t available on UHD, I simply buy it on iTunes. On a 150” screen, 1080p looks awfully pixelated.

Oh… yeah there’s also that. I don’t own a TV at all. Only a 4K projector and large format screen.

So a good BD looks pixelated yet a low bitrate 4k itunes copy looks good? Lol.

Eh, there tends to be some banding and macroblocking but I rarely buy movies on iTunes either. I’m actually picky about which movies I’ll own anyway. For example, Friday the 13th or Halloween II (don’t get me started on my hatred for that abhorrent piece of shit… siblings? So stupid.)? I’d never own that garbage, no matter the quality.

Same here. I’ll very rarely upgrade a BD to 4K. It has to really be a favorite of mine. Like I’ve said before at some point I simply have to stop rebuying the same movies over & over again. For the vast majority of my collection BD will be it.

Judging by AOD and Lifeforce we will only get the theatrical version unless they discovered the negative for the cut scenes.

+1. Blu is pretty much the end of the party for me.

I was hoping we get Night of the demons, Trick r Treat, and Creepshow on 4K for this Halloween season.

Fingers crossed Black Christmas and silent night deadly night part 1/2 hit 4K for the Christmas season.

Their previous release used the original negative for the uncut version, so hopefully the 4k should, too.

Finally started picking up the Universal Horror Collections and have to say I am disappointed with the packaging, absolutely no thought went into these. Same artwork is repeated on the cover, insert and booklet... seems like a missed opportunity to at least have full page artwork for the posters somewhere in there. I know the market for these movies probably isn't great and I am happy to have them each on their own disc, but for the asking price I feel like a little more could have been done on the packaging side of things which is extremely bland...

I’m in about the same place. BD is largely going to be the end for me - I’m not going out of my way to upgrade to UHD from there.

Ironically, I did just order a 4K player but that is more due to the growing number of UHD/BD combo packs of new releases and a handful of import UHD titles I’d like to pick up that I’ve never had on BD (or DVD for that matter). I don’t even have a 4K television at this point

Calling Peeping Tom (1960) "drivel" and then asking for Psycho II (1983)? Nothing against Psycho II, but there are a lot of people who want more Michael Powell movies on UHD and Peeping Tom is the father of all slashers. Psycho (1960) is the mother.

I saw it once about ten years ago and hated it. I don’t care for movies that place the killer in the protagonist’s role. So I suppose that is more personal preference than the film’s quality. Also, I generally do not like slashers. I love Halloween (‘78) and Psycho (‘60)… but Generally speaking, I can’t sit through a slasher movie. I find them boring and schlocky. Outside of those, the closest thing one would find to a slasher on my shelf is RoboCop… which doesn’t resemble a slasher in, really any way.

I started buying 4K UHD Blu-ray + standard Blu-ray combo packs right from the beginning, long before I owned an actual 4K UHD player, because it was worth spending the extra five dollars each time to "future-proof" my purchases while watching the standard BD from each pack in the meantime. When I finally got a 4K player and 4K television at the beginning of the pandemic, I had over 150 4K discs to choose from in my collection.

I am pretty much caught up with 4K UHD upgrades to existing Blu-rays in my collection, but the new 4K releases are coming out so hard and fast right now that I will not be able to keep up for much longer.

I will have to make some tough decisions in the future about priorities for upgrades. Poltergeist on 4K? Definitely! Trancers on 4K? Hmmm...we'll see.

Standard Blu-rays hit the sweet spot for me as far as home video viewing, but 4K UHD Blu-rays do have an added "oomph" that makes them worthwhile. Plus, in the case of several releases (Cat People, for example), the 4K UHD remedies problematic standard Blu-ray presentations.
