Moving on through the Irwin Allen: Master of Disaster box set...
![]() Several high society friends reunite for a fun-filled weekend trip up a skylift cable car so that they can picnic on a mountain overlook. This vacation takes a terrifying turn when a lightning storm causes the cable car to become stuck in place high above the canyon ravines, stranding the passengers in dangerous high wind conditions. As the wires of one of the skylift cables slowly snap, one by one, under the weight of the motionless car, the stress of the situation causes buried resentments among the helpless friends to resurface. To make matters even worse, one of the passengers, a potential whistleblower court witness against a corrupt defense contractor company, is targeted by assassins. I was only seven years old when I saw the 1979 made-for-television movie, Hanging by a Thread, directed by Georg Fenady and produced by disaster film extraordinaire Irwin Allen, during its original air date over two nights and I never saw it again until just recently, but I am rather amazed at how well I have remembered each and every detail about the story over the years. Several movies like this that I saw during my childhood made a big impression on me in such a way. It is funny that I cannot even remember why I walked into the garage of my home five minutes ago, but I can somehow recall specific dialogue moments from a television movie that I saw 44 years ago. Because I am fond of the memory of my seven year-old self being completely riveted by this film, I am probably making it out to be a far better movie than it actually is, but my middle-age self also finds it to be an intense and engaging effort, despite certain storytelling limitations. As with all Irwin Allen productions, this one benefits from a star-studded cast of actors, many of whom were a decade of so past their prime, but still able to deliver capable and convincing performances. Our unfortunate cable car passengers are played by Sam Groom (Otherworld), Patty Duke Austin (Valley of the Dolls), Joyce Bulifant (Airplane!), Oliver Clark (M.A.S.H.), Bert Convy (The Cannonball Run), Burr DeBenning (The Incredible Melting Man), Donna Mills (Knots Landing), and Michael Sharrett (Deadly Friend). Roger Perry (The Six Million Dollar Man) stars as a detective ally to Sam Groom's endangered witness character, while Cameron Mitchell stars as one of the baddies. I am not normally fond of flashbacks as a narrative device in movies, because I feel that there are often better ways to incorporate elements from a character's past into a story. In the case of Hanging by a Thread, however, the many flashbacks work decently well to add tension to what would otherwise be a simple one-note tale. It is interesting that, although Hanging by a Thread features overt adult themes, namely alcoholism, divorce, infidelity, and crime, my seven year-old self somehow picked up on the gist of things back in 1979 during my first viewing. I did not understand the specific grown-up nuances, but I could readily tell which characters were sleazy, which characters were dishonest, and which characters were inherently good. Kids are surprisingly adept at reading people, or at least I would like to think that I was during my childhood. Props to Shout Factory for putting these forgotten gems together in the Irwin Allen: Master of Disaster collection with great presentations. Last edited by The Great Owl; 10-03-2023 at 06:33 PM. |

I've been on a tighter budget this year and held off on quite a few sales saving up for shocktober. I'm gonna be miffed if it never comes because the current Kino sale has a lot of titles I want and I've been sitting that one out.

If anyone wants to get the rolled poster for Clue, there are just 30 left, and they are moving fast.
https://shoutfactory.com/collections...ectors-edition Edit: they broke the poster inventory into 2 or more units of 250 for some reason. So the second batch is now up. Last edited by MifuneFan; 10-03-2023 at 09:26 PM. |

Yeah that's how it was done for other products with posters since they added the inventory amounts. Their store exclusive Shaw Brothers set had 600 with posters and then when that sold out, switched to 1,900 without posters. It would be lame if they're doing it this way to entice people to buy it quickly due to FOMO.
