If I ran a label, I'd almost be hesitant to release my big guns in October because every other label are doing the same, so they'd all be competing for your money. I think that's why we sometimes see bigger announcement slates from labels known for horror in September, or even November/December. Arrow for instance had an arguably stronger September 2023 slate than October, which included their Psycho 4K collection, Blood and Black Lace 4K, Ring (1998) 4K, and others.

I was a little underwhelmed with Scream's slate this year, but I'm hoping Synapse delivers with Trick or Treat before Halloween. After all, I can only watch one movie on Halloween anyways!

Not the Halloween I was hoping for, but so be it.
You're right, but at the very least labels like Criterion and Radiance delivered with their October slate. I mean, we're getting a Val Lewton 4k double feature and Demon Pond 4k from the former and Daiei Gothic: Japanese Ghost Stories from the latter. Pretty exciting if you ask me. We also still don't know what Severin, Vinegar Syndrome and Sony are planning on releasing.

I'm debating whether to pre-order Death Becomes Her from Shout for the two-weeks-early shipping or from Amazon for an easy return in the event of scratched discs? That's sad huh

We've passed a saturation point and that's why we're seeing so many reissues. There's stuff that's unreleasable for whatever reason, the rest has been done ad nauseum. No doubt there's a lot of MIA stuff out there as well, as the sock account has proven with his extensive lists, but how much of that is doable?
Well I just think we could see some different titles that really need 4K UHDs that haven’t gotten them yet. Case in point The Ruins needs a 4K UHD something Shout! Factory could’ve definitely done and I’m surprised they still haven’t done that yet, a Descent box set, a lot of these 2000’s horror titles that have only been released on Blu-Ray with no 4K UHD in site. These titles are desperately in need of new transfers as the old Blu-Rays aren’t very good, and really suck. Unlike a lot of old stuck on VHS, or DVD horror titles these titles from the 2000s are definitely doable.

+ The Relic, Hard Rain, Nick of Time and many others. These would be "double dips" I'd gladly spring for. I hear The Descent may be forthcoming.

Interested in none of the new stuff. Guess I'll finally just upgrade my bluray of Dog Soldiers to the 4K.

So no A Simple Plan from Shout in October either. At this point I'm thinking Criterion has it.

If they do have it, it'd be nice if they could convince Raimi to be involved in the special features (like they've been able to do with the Coen Brothers.)

I’m thinking they do along with Paper Moon I have a strong feeling Criterion has both titles, and will be releasing both films in either November, or December.

Halloween usually delivers some surprises and a 'WOW' factor. No requested new to disc stuff and a glut of re-releases/upgrades is a disappointment. A nice 50/50 mix of fresh to disc stuff and upgrades would have been more well received. As for Severin, 70% of their latest accouncements can not be used an argument for people ignoring new to disc stuff.

If smaller labels like FCE can release fresh to disc stuff like Heavenly Bodies and Paradise, a label with tons more capital like SF should be able to do better than what has been announced for October, imo.

Not a knock on anyone that is happy with the annoucements either. I was just hoping/expecting to at least be a little bit 'WOWED'
The thing with Scream/Shout Factory being such a big company, they need big titles to make big $. So they really do tend to avoid doing more of the smaller, unreleased titles that you get from Severin and other smaller labels. Or even Kino with their big bulk deals are able to get out some of the harder to find stuff.

Yeah, if I had a label my Halloween releases would be timed for late August and September. The market in October is just too crowded, especially as that is when the major studios pump out their horror catalog.

Scream factory should start covering the early 2000’s horror movies. No other company has covered that ground yet. Sorority row, Vacancy, Valentine, When a stranger calls remake, The descent, The Texas chainsaw massacre remake and the My bloody valentine remake. i think that would put scream factory so far ahead of everyone

not gonna lie, it does feel a little underwhelming.

i dont know that we are quite at the point where everything had come out. there are a lot of movies. but not every title will move units.

yeah. i mean. it isnt like they havent tried to put out things in smaller batches based on data of previous poor sales. everyone can guess, but it doesnt matter. people complained when they put out too few copies and they also complained when they increased runs. (nightbreed on blu)

i remember someone involved in anchor bay saying something to the effect of every time they wanted to release an italian horror that wasnt a surefire hit, the men in charge would do it of they also put out another version of evil dead. reissues arent exactly a new thing. that just always been the nature of the business.

New features heck yeah I'm going to be so excited to pre-order this as I didn't buy the original Blu-Ray of this title very excited about this so much. As it's the only title I'm actually interested in from their October slate as I can pick up a 10 dollar cheap Blu-Ray for As Above So Below which is probably what I'm going to do for that title. The rest of their slate literally doesn't interest me in the slightest.

Would they be allowed to release the UK version of The Descent? I absolutely would not pay for the US ending.

Anchor Bay, the house that Evil Dead DVD re-releases built. I remember there was this one guy that posted at DVDTalk that bought every release of the Evil Dead trilogy and would post photos every time he got the newest release.

They were supposed to release a version of Evil Dead that was a replica of the cabin and it was supposed to include the Within the Woods short. As sick as I was with the endless re-releases of the film, I was willing to buy it one more time but, alas, it never came to be. Of course, I've since bought the film at least half a dozen times again since then on subsequent formats
