Guess now it's up to Terror Vision.

Nosferatu is good, End of Days is great, Black Sunday decent... That's it. Stop hyping 14 titles, when half of them are Steelbook reissues

To be fair, the Chinese Ghost Story Trilogy would have been a Scream release if not for the HK line being made. Though they're not really knocking down the door wit Scream releases, I think the ones announced have been on many wish lists over the years, especially End of Days, so it'll make a lot of people happy. .

Have you ever seen it? It's an excellent gothic horror from Bava. I think SF were wrong for doing the Bava cashbgrab set first, but this 4K of Black Sunday is still a pretty big release in my opinion.

"Gamblers." I'm gonna guess that Shout doesn't have a paid proofreader.

That was what I thought too when I first saw it. I actually reached out to their press contact to ask about it, and see if it was a typo for gamblers, but never heard back lol

This was my email from July 2nd

Hello, in the press release for Peking Opera Blues there was mention of a 6-film box set titled HONG KONG GLAMERS & GAMERS (HKCC #8-13). Is this a typo? Is the title meant to say Gamblers and Gamers? I don't believe Glamers is a word. Additionally, is there info on what films are included?

Thanks,

Michael

Don't get me wrong, I'm getting it. Just kinda getting tired of reissues nonstop. Especially at the Steelbook bs. 14 made it sound like we were getting a huge slate. When in reality, it's 3 good titles, more HK, a couple non horror (that are alright).
But this is October. Nothing in this slate made me go "hell yeah". Sadly End of Days is probably the most enticing title here.

Just my opinion of course. But a pretty lackluster Halloween slate from every boutique.

The 14 represents the total amount of titles coming from Shout, so it's never just Scream stuff. I don't think the Shout Official did anything to hype the number, they simply stated how many were being announced. I think it's almost better if they don't mention the number, as it gets people unnecessarily excited, thinking we're getting a huge number of Scream titles, and it inevitably leads to disappointment because of this misunderstanding.

I think the days of slates making you go hell yeah are long gone, and I feel that's also a monthly problem here. People expect Scream Factory of days past, without accepting that they've more or less moved on years ago, and have expanded into other genres and types of releases as well. I'd even argue that this isn't unique to Shout either, but has been happening with every boutique. There's quite a number of films that Arrow put out now that people would completely scoff at if the Arrow Video of old were doing them. Same for Vinegar Syndrome, who are veering more and more into mainstream territory with some of their titles.

And the big reason for that is the market has simply changed. Long gone are the days of major studios releasing their catalogue on home video; it's streaming now. Major studios would dump their massive catalogue on DVDs and the early days blu-ray, irrespective of the quality.

But now, not only are the buyers more discerning and fewer in number, but the money just isn't there anymore for major studios to risk doing restorations themselves, getting the discs pressed, and hoping they sell. The boutique labels have picked up that slack, which is why the fare they may have used to release has dwindled and more mainstream pr 'safe' fare is considered.

Classic Shout, release blu only Bava box.
Collectors: oh, 4k restorations must not be done! Coming from elsewhere, must be!
Shout: here come the Bava 4ks, sold separately, batteries not included

I mean are any of those Bava movies even good enough to warrant a 4K upgrade? I don’t personally need to upgrade every single movie. Sometimes the blu ray is good enough. I don’t own the set, but if I can get it for a good price, I’ll probably go with that over the eventual 4K’s for each one.

With that being said, this lineup is not great. Arrow Video has been killing it all year and Scream Factory has just been disapppinting for the most part.

BLACK SUNDAY 4K is an easy order for me. NOSFERATU I ordered the BFI 4K but glad it's coming out in the US. A CHINESE GHOST STORY TRILOGY is a disappointment being bluray only but understandable if the elements just weren't good enough for a 4K. Shocked at all that we are getting these HK titles honestly after all these years and seeing the same hand me down transfers. END OF DAYS is a good choice for Scream but saw it once and was good. CATCH-22 is a definite must but an inevitable purchase perhaps during a sale. Cool looking steelbook releases but I don’t usually bite on those double or triple dips of the same disc.

For me personally, a little disappointing of a month however Scream Factory will still see my money when they do their big sale on their site and I'll probably buy 10-20 titles.

End of Days - bought the Blu cheap just a few years ago but never got around to watching. I'll probably upgrade.

Chinese Ghost Story - in for this one

Nosferatu - I might double dip. Nice looking film and the slip will look good next to the others.

Black Sunday - I still haven't watched my Kino BD. Was anything seriously wrong with it to warrant replacing it?

Evangelion 1.11 - A 4K is coming out in Japan soon, I feel like they're just taking advantage of the OOP status until the 4K rights clear.

Finally Nosferatu! I wonder if the new extras in the BFI release will also be in this one? The BFI doesn't have a booklet or a slipcase and the blu ray included (if there is one?) would be Region B, so I assume it's safe to wait for the Scream factory release. I'm so glad they put the original poster art and not some crappy new one!

Here's hoping someone finally does justice to the the 1922 version over here in North america. I'm still clinging to my Eureka and BFI region B, in the hopes that someone else than Kino will release this again one day.
