Maybe they could really do something jaw dropping like acquiring Night of the Living Dead or Dawn of the Dead. Im not counting on it...but Shout Factory has released a lot of things no one ever expected...and that includes their MST3K Volumes
You don't really have to do anything big to get Night of the Living Dead. It's public domain, man!

Amazon.com independent sellers have them for roughly $11-16.

It's public domain, but who owns the original film elements, negative, internegative, interpositive, etc.? Some library? The filmmakers? If a label wanted to borrow it for a 2K scan, what would be the process?

I think that the Weinstein Company have the original elements.

So if it's public domain do I just call them, fax my driver's license, and pay the shipping cost to have it sent to me for let's say a month?

Sad news!
The Anchor Bay dvd from 1999 was bad. Needs an upgrade and this was a great horror anthology movie.

Now that you read some of the comments about "not having to do anything big to get it" ..looks like you actually do a lot to obtain this PD title - it is a big title...man !

USA Night of the living.. Oh hell no...

Night of the Living Dead would cost more and be more of a risk for any company, why do you think no one has done it in America yet? Forgotten Films was a rip-off, so that one doesn't even really count...

In regards to Night of the Living Dead:

Lets leave Public Domain films to someone who is not already spending a ton to get out films that haven't been on dvd, literally, hundreds of times.

I worked for Sony for years and there is so much money that goes into these releases. Stickers, Upc, Shrink Wrap, suitable prints, replication, duplication, covers, editing, slipcovers, remastering, audio restoration, production of special features and making them HD, menu design, layering, etc, etc, etc...

I dont see it happening... Too Bad though.

You can't copyright a master.

Can't remember if Cliff has given a 'no' to Badham's Dracula?

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for that one.

Wait... What?! I thought that anyone can release a PD title, but they would have to do their own transfer work. If someone made a new transfer, DI, master, whatever, isn't it their property?

Can I release the 1925 version of The Gold Rush by making copies of the Criterion disc?

This sucks.

Yeah, I think that is some partial misunderstanding/misinformation there.

A title that is in public domain can be released by anyone... but you can't just take the work of someone else and copy it and sell it yourself, at least not legally.

IF Shout does their own transfer of a public domain movie, then Shout owns that transfer and can go after anyone they can prove used their transfer.

Someone else could release a version of the movie to compete... but that someone would have to do his own transfer OR risk being sued.

If the film is re-colorized, or scenes are spliced to create a "new cut" it would then be able to be put under Copyright, and some international cuts are not all in the public domain either...

But essentially, yes, Legend films release Plan 9 From OuterSpace, but I, hypothetically could go out and "rip" it then make my own menus and sell it on a BD-R, though it is not considered Classy..... Just ask VCI, I believe they just announced a "rip" of White Zombie that Kino released earlier this year.

[Show spoiler]and no one has mentioned it, and its been a while since the announcement, but ITMOM was announced and quickly posted in this thread... so here goes, even though I doubt you haven't hear:

That's a misconception. I personally know Public Domain DVD distributors and you can legally copy a transfer. No one owns it unless they make a very significant change, such as colorizing or editing. Making HD or remastering doesn't count, therefore there can not be a copyright. Its still not a "new film", so it can be copied.

Cliff can be quoted here:

im starting to get really hopeful that the burbs is going to be one of the con anouncements. just about every horror title that i could have ask for has been released or is scheduled for release later this year so why not the burbs?

how about the return of the living dead? mgm title, could really use a proper US release and would look good in a collecters edition.

Cliff says they won't do it because of how great the Second Sight release was. It referring to ROTLD.
