If you count these titles from screams 12/13 roster as the top tier titles,(and by that i mean titles that appeal to a bigger broader audience than the likes of us horror nuts)

Halloween 2,
Halloween 3,
They Live,
Phantasm 2,(?)
From Beyond,(?)
The Burning,(?)
The Howling,
The Fog,
Day of the Dead,
Psycho 2,
Psycho 3,
Amityville,

Then i wonder how many titles could match these that are left in the MGM/Universal etc(i'd be amazed if Universal let The Thing go) vaults. There are loads films we would want(i can think of over 30+) but how many that reach those levels of broad crossover appeal?
I would,nt be surprised if scream surprise us all again next year with new deals with studios and independent rights holders to augment their pre-existing deals.

If they were to strike up deals with other studios, I would love to see them get the rights to Phantasm and the ultimate edition cuts of Dawn of the Dead.

Just think, all those movies must be coming from somewhere, imagine the possibilities... Maybe he will crack HBO or another smaller studio and snag some really nice gems, like The Hitcher, for example.
We shall see

I think he doesnt reply because he cant catch every question on here as well as maybe they do have 'it' and cannot say anything at the moment which is understandable . We are more apt to get "no" answers when they dont have a title so the hopes wont get so high.

I'm still really REALLY hoping for the Tales from the Crypt Movies. Demon Knight is by far and away the preferred choice, but hopefully both that and Bordello of Blood could be released this year/next year.

Especially considering we are supposed to be getting what? 48 titles next year from scream? Unless new deals have been struck up, I'm really not sure what else there's left with MGM and Universal that they're willing to let go of that can even top this year's releases let alone match them. I'm sure they'd still have some real gem's but as you said, I can't imagine it getting even close to as good as this year without a new deal...

Look at Criterion, they're smart enough to give us mostly boring titles about failing marriages and "life" on blu-ray then smack us with exciting announcements for titles most of us want and have been craving. They're spreading out Kurosawa and Chaplin flicks to one title per year for example and are really milking the desire for such titles as The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Le Samourai and anything by David Lynch.

Basically everything Scream releases has been must own's and fan favourites. One after the other. There's rarely a filler title. Don't get me wrong, despite how painful it's been on my bank account, I am really happy about it. I love having so many to save up for and look forward to but what exactly is Scream's plan do you guys think? It seems like they've kinda blown their load in one year as far as their current deals are concerned. Theres still some left, but not many with the broad appeal.

Perhaps their plan was to go all out with this new studio and climb the ranks to the best horror film distributor in America (arguably the whole world) which they've done, and hope that ambition pays off by other studios noticing and making a deal? That would be pretty risky if nobody wanted to make one yet and they had basically no more biggies left to maintain the rep and expectations we now have of them.

With 48 titles coming next year, I'm only expecting about half of them or less to be ones worth being excited over but it would be amazing to be surprised. I wouldn't put it past them. Scream do seem to be pretty full of surprises. Meh, who knows. I'm just jibber jabbering because there's no new news yet and in worried next year will be really underwhelming.

There's still a lot of untapped stuff, from the '70s, '80s, and '90s (hell, even the '00s--Slither anyone?). They can clean out Universal's, MGM's, and maybe even Fox's horror catalogs. There are other gems floating out there for them to grab (like the Q: The Winged Serpent pick-up), and other companies for them to make deals with (Lionsgate, possibly Sony?).

I was going to say something smarmy about the folks at Criterion having different taste than you, but this did make me chuckle.

Or spend some extra money and get the Thing
There are older movies from the 50s,60s and 70s as well
Burn Witch Burn, Island of Terror , Island of the Burning Doomed, I,Monster, It with Roddy McDowall (that's an MGM title). We have covered the Poe titles that Corman did... I know they are doing mostly contemporary horror titles, since the classics are winding up in budget DVD releases. I would have loved an HD release of Angry Red Planet but it probably wouldn't be a big seller.
Id like to see Demon Knight as well...
Time will tell

Haha indeed they do. That's fine. I've bought a few of those artsy fartsy releases from them that had certain aspects that appealed to me but generally I prefer their classic American cinema, film noirs, cult, horror, contemporary and silent films. But that's not much of their output unfortunately.

Speak for yourself, deepbreath. Just because you have such a depressingly narrow and unsophisticated taste in film doesn't mean that you speak for 'most' of us. Genre film certainly has its place, but it is only one part of the celluloid canon. Try expanding your mind and your taste!

Edit: ah, I see you have tried out some of their 'artsy fartsy' films, to no effect. Oh well. Did you check out their Monsters and Madmen set? DVD only (as of yet) but some very fun 50s flicks, with and without Karloff.

It would be nice to get the nice and grainy HD-DVD transfer on a blu-ray with all the Uk extras and/or just some new ones (I've already got the Aussie release which is a port of uk's so I can survive without them being on a new release) and with HD audio obviously. That'd be perfect.

The funny thing is that Criterions most boring title is an American Film...yes I am talking about Heaven's Gate...3 and 1/2 hours worth of story that I can sum up in 3 minutes. Oh wait Last Year at Marienbad is really the most boring actually.

Woah. I AM speaking for myself. I made it clear that it was my own personal opinions and said I've even got some of the films that would fall into the catagory I stated I wasn't that into because they have certain aspects that appeal to me.

You put me down for having a "depressingly narrow and unsophisticated taste"? That's not very fair and pretty rude. If you bothered to looking through my collection, you would see that I hold an appreciation for all genres and era's and I have quite a few sophisticated films. After your initial attitude towards me I can't tell if your recommendation is sarcasm because I'm apparently such a narrow minded dimwit, but no, I haven't got that set.

I said American Classics. Heavens Gate practically single-handedly ruined a whole excellent direction that cinema was going in and infuriated almost everyone who saw it and seemingly still causes irritation to the majority to this day. It certainly looks epic and has been re-evaluated by some as a masterpiece but I would hardly call Heavens Gate anything close to an American Classic lol

American films are just as likely to be boring with little to no replay value as foreign cinema. I'm not favouring American cinema over the latter. Truth is, in this day and age, foreign cinema is generally MUCH better than what america gives us but Criterion isn't in the habit of releasing many contemporary foreign cinema, are they? Lol

There are certainly plenty of great older foreign films but I tend to favour BUYING older American cinema because they tend to have more replay value. That's just my opinion.

@Cmac - Would you elaborate on selection criteria for titles? Are there specific benchmarks you assess when determining acquisitions? Thank you in advance for any information.

I objected to his use of the words 'most of us' as if his preferences were identical to everyone else's. My recommendation of the Monsters and Madmen set was sincere. In any case, although my condemnation of his (lack of) taste was insulting, I myself was insulted by what I perceived to be a grand and uninformed dismissal of both Criterion and those who enjoy much (but not all- they've released several duds and likewise several shoddy transfers, though the latter are presumably what they were stuck with ) of their catalog. But whatever, this is the Scream thread and not the Criterion one so I'll drop it.
