Not a horror movie per se but the scariest film I've seen since childhood was "No Country for Old Men." I didn't read the book upon watching it so everything that happened on screen was incredibly unexpected, with the Chigurh character absolutely terrifying. What frightened me more was what Chigurh represented, which was the brutal violence and inevitable demise that everyone in that world would eventually face.

I used to be a big fan of the V television series back in the 1980s. (V = the miniseries-turned-television-series about the brilliant super-advanced aliens who came to Earth in massive flying saucers just so they could get into a lot of motorcycle chases with humans across the scrubby backlots of Los Angeles studios.) Anyway, there was one episode of V where the aliens captured some of the human resistance fighters and put them in a prison camp surrounded by these sand moats, where these creatures called crivits lurked under the sand to suck people under. I always think about that when I reflect on Blood Beach. |

How well does Scanners 2 and 3 follow the original? I haven't seen the original since the DVD first came out, and all I can remember from it is a few scenes, and that the DVD had audio that was completely out of sync for the last 30 or so minutes of the movie. I've never seen the sequels. Since it looks like Criterion is going to wait until people stop expecting it in the announcements, do I need to be familiar with the first before seeing the sequels?
