On the topic of the "Darkman" created artwork, this is why "Shout!/Scream" is smart enough to give us the theatrical art as an option on the reverse side of the insert. If that's not good enough because you have to look at the slipcover with the bad artwork, hold onto the slipcover and sell it a month or two after release to someone who doesn't get one with their order.

I'm still waiting for another announcement to blow my socks off for next year or December possibly. Far as I'm concerned all their big guns ("Prince of Darkness", "Day of the Dead", "Psycho II", "Psycho III", and the two box sets) will be out on the market in a matter of two months.

I generally like all the new art, its not replacing the original art, its just adding to the experience of buying a nice, neat, Collector's Edition. They present both, so that SHOULD ease what ever is eating at these new-art haters.

That works for most, but what about when the original poster is dreadful (Night of the Comet) in comparison to the new art. Wouldn't you want some uniformity in your collection?

Not a fan of either. The Fog, I guess, because I was at least into watching. I thought it was okay, just not up to the JC standard of the '80s. Prince of Darkness, on the other hand, was boring as SH!T.

Definitely The Fog.

I've never dug PoD, I just couldn't get into it.
It bored me to death, but I completely respect it.

Another Universal 80's horror title I would like to see on blu is Nightmares. It was a pretty good anthology movie. All 4 stories were pretty good but the third story, with Lance Henriksen as a priest who lost his faith and is pursued by a demonic car is really good. Very reminiscent of Spielberg's Duel. Kind of ironic that director Joseph Sargent would also go on to make the infamous Jaws: The Revenge.

No go.
Very recently denied, even as part of the second Universal deal.

For what it's worth, I haven't rented a movie in almost 15 years. I Blind Buy a LARGE majority of my movies based solely on the commercials/Forum Comments/and Trailers. During the first part of the 2000's I made it a point to walk into FYE/Best Buy and purchase the most interesting Horror movie I could find... and it was usually based on the cover. This is how I came across Last House on the Left, and I Spit on Your Grave. I still follow this same approach to some extent as well. It has let me down only a hand full of times (10,000 BC, NINJA) but has also worked wonderfully and made the movies that much more enjoyable.

I do agree that movies should come with Eng subs as a given, but thinking that the English subs themselves are a bullet point and are going to increase sales over cool/crazy cover art is simply crazy to me.
I watch my movies with the subtitles turned on all the time. I pay more attention to that spec than I do to what kind of cover art a release has...

A lot, last time I checked there are quite a few people that are hearing impaired but I guess they don't count?

I myself are hard of hearing (military accident) so yeah, I like for my movies to have subtitles.

With 360 million hearing impaired people in the world, that's a lot of potential sales, myself included. So it's pretty discriminatory when the ONLY blu-ray copy of a film (like from Olive) is too cheap to come with them. Then I have to rip them form the Internet and rip the blu and combine the files. Which I shouldn't have to do.

Yup add another to the list who uses subtitles. I can hardly hear out of my left ear so subs can make or break a purchase

I think I'll hold off on The Fog unless I can get a good used copy with a slip down the road. Will probably pick up Day of the Dead and Psycho II (released within a week of one another.) I haven't seen Psycho II but everyone says it's a pretty good sequel.

Again, as I've said a few times now ... I'm not arguing the importance of English Subtitles. I think every film should have them. But this discussion was NEVER about them. This Discussion was about the fact that another poster claimed that English Subs are a bigger selling point then the cover art and that Scream Factory should stop utilizing new art because it "Doesn't affect sales".

My whole argument from the beginning has been that advertising in general is a visual media and that Cover art, not just Scream factory Cover art mind you but ALL cover art, is a much larger part of the marketing machine and has a much bigger impact on sales then English subtitles. As Noirfan pointed out, it's an either/or scenario for most people. While 360 Million people may need them, another 6 Billion or so do not. However it's well established that visual images work on a conscious and subconscious level with shoppers. The right artwork sticks with you and can and will affect your attitudes and shopping pattern's. This has been established by 100 years of advertising and marketing research across a wide range of products.

So to reiterate... I'm not saying English subtitles aren't important. I do think they should be on all releases. I do think that they have a small impact on total sales, but that impact is so small it isn't enough to affect the total sales meaningfully. Conversely, I believe the cost to have new artwork designed is so small that when factored in with the development and marketing costs, is still a better investment in the long run garnering new interest and more sales then the addition of subtitles ever would. Just look at this thread. How many posts were about the artwork (even before this argument/discussion began)? People love to look at pictures and judge them... Positively, negatively, it doesn't matter... what matter's is people are talking about the release now, and that's guaranteed to translate to sales. This happens with nearly every release from almost every studio, yet how many times do people discuss English Subtitles? Not that often.

This is true. I have bypassed many films I would've blind-bought at Target and BB simply because of lousy artwork. I don't care if it's $7.99, if the art on the case doesn't grab me then it's staying on the shelf. Mind you, this only applies to movies I haven't seen, not those I have seen and love (those I WILL purchase regardless of the artwork). The sad reality is studios feel they have to cater to the masses and they believe they'll achieve that by plastering Blu-ray cases with large images of actor's faces and clips from the film and a whole bunch of useless information on the back covers.

On the subject of subtitles, I'm not hearing impaired (not yet, anyway) but I absolutely appreciate when subs are included as I do use them more often than not. I live in a small apartment so blasting a home theater setup (which I don't have) won't be an option. I'm left with the speakers on the TV, which weren't designed for crystal-clear audio even at loud volumes. Sometimes I've got that sucker cranked up to 30 and I still can't hear what they're saying. So to those of us who don't have HT gear or just want to watch a movie late at night without bothering anybody near us, subs are a huge help.

I was editing my price tracking/Blu ray lists a short bit ago and I realized that the film(s) [Rec] haven't had a Domestic US Blu ray release. I think the first 2 films would make a fantastic addition to the Scream Line up. They're a bit newer then what we're accustomed to, but considering they've been out for a few years now, and there is still no US Blu Ray, I think they'd be a really solid addition. I own the Canadian Box set, and it's nice enough that I wouldn't necessarily need an upgrade, but for all the people that missed out on this franchise this would be a golden opportunity. I liked part 1 and LOVED part 2. I'm Curious if that would be possible in the coming years.
