Everyone knows about WB's "stingyness" but Criterion's Deal, and I use that word VERY loosely, was a fluke.

Anyway, I'm actually more concerned that you're not a fan of Sleepaway Camp...
Considering the sheer amount of crap that Lionsgate owns/has access to, I'm actually surprised they haven't partnered with Scream Factory to help get more releases out there door.

Lionsgate has a ton, but they're a big company now. They're producing huge billion-dollar revenue franchises and distributing all over the world.

They're rolling in the dough, so they see no real reason to focus on their cult catalog to any large extent, or have anyone else do the same. They're just "not interested" as cliff says.

Same goes with WB, by far the largest film company in the world, what real reason do they have to dig up a bunch of old movies that are seen as "declasse" in the biz anyway.

Yes they sell, but in the grand scheme of large companies, they really don't need to release them or need anyone else to either...

Yeah. I didn't like "The Watch" in Pulp Fiction too much either. The only outstanding thing from beginning to end in Pulp Fiction was "The Bonnie Situation".

I've mentioned it before, but what about Warner (several years back) licencing Dead Ringers to Criterion.

Dead Ringers was a title that WB acquired after the Criterion DVD. The Unbearable Lightness of Being is another title like this.

That's what surprises me though. If you know you have a HUGE back catalog of films that you aren't going to touch for the next few years, then why not charge a flat fee to another studio/distributor and let them do all the work of releasing the films. If they sell well then Lionsgate can release their own version later on, if not, then who cares because you were paid up front and it's the smaller studio that takes the hit. It just seems like a win for everyone in that regard. The films aren't going to make any money sitting in a vault somewhere, but if you can collect a licensing fee for a short licensing window, why not? Studios double/triple/quadruple dip on films all the time.

Dead Ringers was distributed theatrically by 20th Century Fox. Around the time it was released by Criterion on DVD, Anchor Bay had home video rights. When the rights ended up with Warner Bros., Criterion's ability to distribute the title promptly ended.

For what it's worth Anchor Bay is releasing Embrace of the Vampire, a mid-90's New Line Cinema title. I have no idea what the motivation was, other than Warner realizing the title was way, way down on the totem pole of films they have plans for.

Yeah, I don't know what the deal with that one is. New Line did license some titles out back when they still operated on their own (to Criterion and Image), but Embrace of the Vampire kind of came out of nowhere. Perhaps they landed some other NL films, or maybe it's a one-time thing.

Morgan Creek has moved that title around over the years. It's really no different than the situations with Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut and Exorcist III, also Morgan Creek titles that weren't originally distributed by Warner.

I ordered Halloween 2 as part of the $5 off $25 promo on Amazon and it arrived today with slip. They're still out there.

Earlier, I was watching Eden Lake (which has perhaps the bleakest movie ending in the past decade) and I could see Scream Factory trying to get the rights to it (Vivendi currently has the rights due to Weinstein selling off their older titles a few years back).

Since FOX is getting ready to Air it's newly imagined version of "Sleepy Hollow" this would be a great time for Scream Factory to release "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" (1980) Starring Jeff Goldblum and Dick Butkus. This has never been released on DVD and would make a Great Combo Pack.

[Show spoiler]
Dick Butkus is not dead.

If Vivendi (Gaiam) does have the rights, I'd think that might be a strong possibility. Gaiam is Shout! Factory's distributor.

Your right, I could have sworn he was. Even better he can do commentary on the DVD/BluRay if SF picks it up.

Shout! picked up Werner Herzog's Nosferatu: The Vampyre along with a number of the acclaimed director's other films.

Will SF provide slipcases if contacted?

Have 3 releases so far - H2, H3 and They Live! - all came from Amazon without slipcases.

I'm not a slipcase nut but their releases with reversible artwork are great with slipcases.
