Really? I remember a lot of people hating Prison. I think that the fallback from that and From Beyond is the reason that that guy hasn't done any more art.

One of the greatest things I have ever heard was someone deliver that line in a completely different way. "Opinions are like A**holes,....they all stink!" LOL. I thought that was great.

When you look at a Criterion Cover even without the C and Block on the lower left side, the covers immediately are recognizable (adding in the "C" and the exact same layout for each release only compounds this fact). Criterion always shoots for something overly Artsy and pretentious, even when they're releasing a genre film. The similarities aren't as in your face as Scream factory's, but that's simply because Scream utilizes original art (for mostly B Movies) where as Criterion does not. Criterion rarely, if ever uses original one sheet artwork... When they use photos they are almost always hazy with a soft focus, when they use artwork it's rarely detailed or modern in design. Criterion is obsessed with the thought that they are releasing the best films of all time, and that these films primarily only occurred during the early days of cinema. Their design structure is based on this thought and on some strange "the best days are behind us" mentality. Criterion tries to pass off every film as if it's the greatest piece of art the world has seen, regardless of whether the film is Antichrist, Fat girl, Salo, Roshomon, or Seven Samurai. So yes, just because the covers aren't hand drawn in a similar style, they do still all look similar and share the same concepts and design, for better or for worse. This is compounded when you consider the sheer amount of Custom Criterion covers people create that look spot on authentic. If anything, it's easier to replicate the Criterion design then it is the Scream Factory design. |

Unlike with Cat People where, seriously, Malcolm McDowell looks like Harvey Keitel. (Or From Beyond, where neither of the figures on the cover looked anything like their actors) |

I've seen that. I just can't remember what it's from. I haven't seen The Dead Pool, so that's not it. Some guy said it yelling out the door at somebody in the hall.

I think one of the more common complaints about the covers is the likeness of characters. While I understand peoples disappointment with some of the artwork, I think that complaints like that need to be balanced. What I mean is that for an illustration such as "Cat People" or "The Fog" where the artist is clearly going for a straight-forward, realistic approach to the characters, it's warranted to have a disappointment or compliment for what's been done.
That said, a cover like "From Beyond" is a smidge unfair to condone it for unrealistic portrayals of the cast. The color scheme and overall tone of that cover really captures the atmosphere of "From Beyond". Does that look exactly like Jeffrey Combs? Of course not, but I think that was the artistic intent to go more over-the-top and chaotic as the movie very much is. As hardcore fans, we all know who that is and who it's supposed to represent but looking at the new artwork from different angles definitely helps one appreciate not only the art more but what exactly it's trying to capture other than a picture perfect likeness of the cast ![]() |

Everybody's a critic
![]() I generally don't comment about package art...it's like slipcovers...no real movie fan gives a rats behind. But, in the face of this criticism, I have to say that I like it. Art is supposed to be interpretive. If you want photo-realism, you can stick a photo on the cover. When an artist paints a cover, they are trying to capture something very ethereal and indefinable. Each artist has a different style and a different interpretation. And some people won't like it. I always say, "It's not good art if EVERYBODY likes it". This art is stirring a reaction. I like that. |
