The Howling III: The Marsupials is better than most people say, IMO. It's silly at times, and the concept is pretty outrageous but the effects are good as is the comedy. I'd love to see it on blu (although that'll probably never happen).

3 sucked hard. 2 and 4 were fun in a terrible way though.

Dark Angel and Ninja III are on sale today. I wish someone (Shout) would do am decent treatment for the Kosugi Ninja flicks. Also, Split Second with Rutger Bauer would make a great companion piece to Dark Angel. Just make a blu ray, we don't need a collector edition.

The Howling series has to be the worst horror franchise in history. The original was probably a slightly above average werewolf movie that was very influential for it's time. There is no denying the movie's genre importance. However, even with those credentials The Howling was still light years behind An American Werewolf in London which came out the exact same year. The sequels all ranged anywhere from really bad to unwatchable. I'm not sure why anyone wants Scream to waste time and money on them, but I respect everyone's opinion.

It's great. The cast is actually quite good, the story is crazy and it's satire played with an entirely straight face. Good fun, and it's wittier than it gets credit for.

I don't think they're terrible at all.

We've debated the merits of 2 to death in this thread so I'll focus on the later ones:

I think Howling V is really good. A remake of The Beast Must Die, it has good characters and makes terrific use of its gothic atmosphere. Yeah, the low budget prevented any real werewolf action, but the story made up for it.

And Howling VI is pretty fun as well. Good make-up FX and decent characters. I wasn't crazy about the werewolf being an anti-hero, but it had good production value for an early 90s DTV sequel.

As for the Howling franchise being the worst franchise in horror: Children of the Corn and Witchcraft have it beat by a country mile.

Fair enough

Wow, I've never heard that Howling was the worst horror franchise. I agree that the Children of the Corn sequels take that spot.

edit: I just read Pete Rock's post. While I think the sequels are pretty bad, of the ones I've seen, the Children of the Corn sequels were far worse.

Worst horror series?

Witchcraft had an inexplicable 13 films produced, all of which seem to be universally reviled. These films were a fixture in nearly every VHS rental shop throughout the 90's and yet there seems to be no fanbase whatsoever. I've never even seen an inquiry regarding their potential availability for a Blu-Ray release and I think there's 1 or 2 that never even received a DVD release.

Considering that the first Children of the Corn was bad all by itself and it was followed by innumberable bad sequels, I'd say it takes the cake.

Pretty much this.

Although, I have to admit, if someone were to slap them all together in one collection, I'd bite. If only for the nostalgia of the video store days. I watched the first six of them and don't recall liking a single one.

They became late night soft core porn beginning with part II, and that turned into the primary focus with the later ones. I suppose that was a certain appeal for teenagers back in the day, but not so much anymore.

I think most of us can agree that Witchcraft, Children of the Corn, and The Howling are all really bad horror franchises.

I can watch any Children of the Corn sequel without squirming or rolling my eyes. Can't do the same for The Howling films after the first one or Hellraiser III onwards.

Hellraiser 1 & 2 are certified horror classics. Part 3 is pretty good as well. The franchise really dropped the ball after that, but I wouldn't put it in the same category of bad as Children of the Corn or The Howling.
